The real show was called "The Dating Game" and the set looked exactly like that. The audience could see all the participants the whole time, but the people on either side of the partition couldn't see each other until the end. The winner of the date didn't see who they were going with until after they were chosen. That's why this skit is funny.

Geraldine Jones (portrayed by Flip Wilson) came two decades before Wanda and Sheneneh. She was the OG! She put catchphrases like "When you're hot, you're hot, and when you're not, you're not" and "What you see is what you get" into everyday vernacular.

The Dating Game was a game show where one subject was divided from three contestants vying for a date by a partition- as the subject asked the contestants questions. As contestants were eliminated one by one they came to the subjects side and met them then left the stage. Serial Killer Rodney Alkalon was a contestant( bachelor #1) on the show

Wanda actually came first literally months before Sheneneh first appeared (Sept. 3, 1992). In Living Color started in 1990 but Wanda first appeared early/mid '92, so Wanda was first.

You need to react to the skit when it comes out that Wanda was originally in En Vogue. All four beautiful ladies appear in the skit and when they do "it's time for a breakdown" from "(My Lovin') You're Never Going To Get It" is off the chart. Wanda came first as Jamie Foxx joined "In Living Color" in 1991 and Wanda's first appearance was on Season 3 Episode 18 "Ugly Wanda: Masseuse" that aired on February 9th, 1992. "Martin" started on August 27th, 1992. Sheneneh first appeared in season 1 episode 6 "Forever Sheneneh" that aired on October 1st, 1992.

During the 1960's and 1970's there was a real show called The Dating Game. The format as shown in the skit was the same as on the show where the three bachelors were hidden on stage from the female contestant. The two not chosen were introduced first and then the winning bachelor met his date for the first time. This show was considered risque for this time period due to the questions asked by the contestant and responses given by the three potential winners.

The Dating Game ran from 1965 - 1986 and according to IMDB, Jim Carrey, Tom Selleck, Arnold Schwarzenegger, among other stars was a contestant on the show. Chuck Berris (The Gong Show) was a co-creator of the show. Loved watching In Living Color when it was on. 👍👍
