In an interview, REN said that he got a call at 3am from his friend's Mom saying that his friend was calling around saying goodbye to everyone. REN got dressed and went out on foot looking for him while calling his phone repeatedly. About 3 minutes before REN got to the bridge, his friend's cell phone went out of service. REN said that he himself was suicidal at that time because of everything going on in his life (this was shortly after he got sick and he and Sony parted ways) and that he was likely going to end it himself as well. He then went through the process of dealing with his friend being gone and seeing what it did to everyone around him and decided that he could never do that to all of his family and friends. So, in a tragic irony, his friend ending it quite possibly saved REN's life.

This track is in remembrance of his late friend Joe Hughes. Many people believe this was filmed on the same bridge that Joe was last seen on, but it is not. The more that rumour circulates, the less we remember the name of Joe Hughes. Ren also dedicated the track 'Freckled Angels' to Joe as well. RIP Joe Hughes 🪽🪽

Ren and Chinchilla have referred to each other as 'siblings by another mother'/musical counterparts. You recognized the bond they feel and have discussed in interviews. Chinchilla remarked that when they met she was caught by Ren's sense of humor, which is like hers. As for their performance - listening to it, I can't breathe. It's the best description of deep grief I've heard.

I normally don't confuse my infatuation with a song, with the fact that it may not be everyone's cup of tea, and to a point, that still holds true here with this song. At the same time, this song and them singing on it's own, minus the message behind it, is so next level great. Then you add in the meaning/story behind the lyrics and my god, you have a masterpiece!! I can't believe radio hasn't even thought about playing it, or that movie directors aren't beating Ren's door down begging him to let them use this track in their next big movie. I love that it kind of belongs to just us Ren fans, but at the same time, I want to see his music get the praise it deserves on a broader scale, ya know.

Ren is the Shakespeare of our time. An artist, musician a poet. A man who lays bare his pain and bleeds in his lyrics. He is Truly sensational. I have had the honour of seeing Ren busking on the streets of Brighton I recommend you watch some of those too. The first time I heard him on the streets I was walking out of M&S and I was just possessed by his voice. I always knew he would get the recognition he deserves. I've never heard anyone like him he's just simply amazing. Every time I went to the city centre I always looked for Ren unhappy lucky enough to see him on the streets three times every time magnificent.

Oh my days, love your reaction and connection to this and their performance, they perform and it is REAL, that is what they do - so talented! I really feel that Ren is blowing up right now because of his realness, his hard work since age 12, his struggles being past and ongoing the man is a poet and a speaker and we've been woken up, people are finding and relating to so much then he hits you with lyricism and beats but the raw and pain is what strikes a chord - loved it Britt and Chinchilla has to be delved into she is another Chameleon of talent and realness in a different way. Great reaction ! first of all. Your Christian values gives a certain meaning to some of the lyrics which i feel is of value. Second, I've listened to this song perhaps 20 - 30 times over the last six weeks or so. I've also listened to a dozen other songs by REN the same amount of times. AND in one way it's a relief not o be constantly listening to great music of the past .... Bach, Billy Holiday, Beethoven, Nina Simone, Purcell, Led Zeppelin, Beyonce, Bob Dylan ... There is no evidence he jumped from that bridge, no police reports nor news reports that say he jumped, no one seen him jump, nor did anyone see him on that bridge that day. Joe has always joked about jumping from a bridge but never does so. So unless there is another news report that said he did, and there were witnesses, and or you were there, you can't say he committed suicide. Joe's body BTW was never found, which eventually would of floated if he did jump.

Its interesting that most people who are attempting or completing the act of unaliving themselves achieve a sense of numbness. It is both haunting and, sadly hopeful in that they believe that pain will end. Their personal pain may cease, but they do not realize in this (half reality state) that their pain is transmitted to everyone who loves them.

It may be worth checking out Fingers by Chinchilla to see some of her solo stuff. The 'live' version with the red background being, imo, the best version. Thank you for the reaction. Struggled with extreme depression all my life and have been admitted to a crissi clinic after a 3rd failed attempt. Ren has helped me more than anything else in my life. I still have the depression, but also a better perspective on life.

Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction. It was interesting to hear you refer to them as "musical soulmates," because Ren refers to Chinchilla as his musical sibling. As for "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Suspension Bridge; his body was never recovered. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one example. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes. Someone else commented that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, others have stated that this is misinformation. Their live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their live performance of "Chalk Outlines." Also, their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable. I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.
