When the band first got together, they were searching for a name. The guys took a drive around town and saw a delivery truck selling..you guessed it..Bread! They liked the name because back in the day, 'Bread' was another term for money. Also, back in the 1970's, bands albums were sold at record stores in bins for each individual band. They though by having a band name starting with the letter B, they could get a lot of exposure being close to The Beatles. Alphabetically speaking. Another all-time Bread classic is called 'IF'. David Gates is a musical god! He also wrote & sang one of the greatest movie songs of all time "The Goodbye Girl".

David Gates wrote this song for his father who died when he was 20 something. He’s lamenting about how he missed a life with his father. David Gates wrote a lot of very emotional songs both when he was with Bread and in his own solo career. “Aubrey” or “What You’ve Done” are great songs.
