I had loved this song for 50 years never knowing the true meaning behind it until it was played when my Father passed from Covid in 2020 and someone told me to listen to the lyrics again. Wow, Totally hit home.

Larry Knecktal is my father. He died in 2009. I've been around this band since I was born. David Gates took his family and lives on a ranch. My family owned a small store in Bell California called K and K market. I pay the piano because of Larry. Brooke my heart when he had a heart attack. Just thought it'd mention this has always been my favorite. I would give everything to have my Daddy back.

My father also played piano Bridge over troubled water for Simon and Garfunkel. Thanks for keeping Bread alive. Mr Gates is in CA on a ranch and Robb Royer are all that's left. Thanks again Love for Knechtel and Bread.

Such a touching song! David Gates wrote this song in memory of his father who died in 1963 & never saw the success he achieved with Bread. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

2025 and still listening to this lovely tribute to his dad Gates had soothing voice. I'm glad he was so successful for he had an understanding heart, too.😂❤

Love your reaction! The catch in his voice on "I own" in the first chorus DESTROYS me every time. When I need to let go of a bunch of emotion, I listen to this, have a good cry...and I'm good to go.
