Brian wrote this song so it is very guitar forward. John and Brian are very busy in this song and the drums are strong and almost sounding like a pulse which goes well with the lyrics. With Queen, it is best not to expect anything because they are not locked into any style or genre. Also, all four members write music, all 4 have had #1 hit songs and each member has a different taste when it comes to music so you are getting a wide variety just in the writing of the songs. I believe that this song is about war, and more probably Nuclear War. Brian makes reference to the "Mushroom Cloud" which is what was seen above where the two atomic bombs exploded in Japan during WW II. We all live in the shadow of the "Mushroom Cloud" waiting for the Hammer To Fall. Thank you for your reaction.

The message of the song, according to the band themselves, was basically Death himself is the Hammer to Fall on you. The line "Rich or Poor or Famous, For Your Truth Is All The Same" was basically saying, "We all meet the same fate one day, no matter who you are." Also, the "Highlander" (1986) film is filled with amazing Queen songs for you to react to one day.

A heavy rock song by Queen is Sheet Heart Attack which drummer Roger Taylor said was "murder" to play live due to it's fast pace. Hammer To Fall is what got me into Queen 40 years ago when my mother bought The Works album on vinyl. Best version of it is Live at Wembley 1986. Queen released a compilation album called Queen Rocks with their heavier type songs on it, worth a listen.

The song was sort of about death but I view it as more of a song of frustration and rage about living in a world so mismanaged by "leaders" that everyone lives in constant fear of nuclear obliteration. "And he who grew up tall and proud / In the shadow of the mushroom cloud / Convinced our voices can't be heard / We just wanna scream it louder and louder / What the hell we fightin' for? / Just surrender and it won't hurt at all / Just got time to say your prayers / While you're waitin' for the hammer to hammer to fall"

It's great to see you discovering and enjoying Queen, and I'm enjoying your comments and insights into the band! I'd recommend the song It's a Hard Life - it's from the same album as Hammer to Fall, but it's totally different type of song - it's one of Freddie's ballads, a brilliant song. It was the single they released before Hammer to Fall, and it's the contrast between the two songs that's interesting to me - I can't think of many bands in history who could make stylistic jumps like that and for it not to feel jarring - but Queen could glide between different styles and genres and whatever they did somehow felt 'right', like they totally belonged in that particular style or genre. It's amazing, really.

Whoo-Whoo, some really rocking Queen! Great song, you should see it live, this is the studio original audio over a video of them live. For real live, search for Hammer to Fall at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath helps Brian May put the hammer down on guitar and Gary Cherone of Extreme does a nice job on vocals. Great performance, that entire concert is worth seeing, great event praising Freddie and the band. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶 Also if you like rocking Queen, try some of their great, early stuff: Liar from the first album. Ogre Battle from Queen 2 Brighton Rock from Killer Queen. They have tons of heavy rocking songs but most attention goes to their greatest hits, they are all over the place as master song writers but at their core, are a Rock Band. Rock On! 🎸

HEY STACEY! PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT NOTE RE. QUEEN’S SET AT LIVE AID: Folks will be asking you to react to Queen’s whole 20-minute Live Aid set (which - YES, PLEASE!). BUT, PLEASE NOTE: In the last couple of years, someone has posted TWO copies of the Queen Live Aid video that are “CORRUPTED”, part of a song in each video is CUT OUT… The first corrupted video is impossible to spot at-a-glance. The second corrupted video is EASY to spot, though… because unfortunately, they STOLE/used without permission, a video from this channel: Mundo do Rock. The ORIGINAL (fantastic quality) video has a “Mundo do Rock” logo up in the corner… The FAKE/stolen/CHOPPED UP copy, also has an additional SMALLER “Mundo do Rock” logo down in the bottom corner. There are LOTS of COMPLETE, EXCELLENT-QUALITY copies of the 20-minute video posted on various YT channels. TO AVOID both corrupted videos: Either use the REAL Mundo do Rock video with ONLY ONE LOGO in the upper corner, OR Use any copy of the video that STARTS WITH TWO “COPS” introducing the band (because neither corrupted video includes the intro) OR Just get a LINK from one of your Queen fan subscribers!

Hi Stacey, please listen to and if you can review "I Was Born To Love You". Every time I listen to this song I discover new sounds and tunes that make me listen to this song over and over again. Also please listen to "Mother Love" the last song Freddie recorded but unfortunately couldn't finish so Brian May finished the song😢 Another ballad that's so awesome is "A Winter's Tail". This is the last song Freddie ever wrote, this was in Montreaux Switzerland where Freddie lived until 2 weeks before his death, Queen had a recording studio there. I'm not sure but I think we all can hear Freddie cough at the end of the song "A Winter"s Tail" 🤔🤔🤔....all from the album "Made In Heaven" from 1995. I found your channel here and love your way of expressing yourself during the queen songs, especially during the Live Aid performance. I still have the same reaction you had when I watch this performance over and over again. For me, the best live performance ever and I was 18 when saw it on TV. and as a huge Queen fan, I was delighted with this performance❣ Keep up the good work Stacey, I really hope you'll review one of the songs I've listed above or maybe all one day, Stacey, thank you 🙏🙏🙏

You're My Best Friend is another big Queen hit written by John Deacon, one of a few worth checking out soon! I don't want to skip Roger's songs either, but only I'm In Love With My Car comes to mind now haha. That said, if you react to all of their Live Aid set, pretty much anything off Night at the Opera could be worth a listen. If you really wanna explore how that album was made, there's a Classic Albums doco on YT, and another for Dark Side of the Moon, after you hear it through, if that's interesting! It could be a bit time consuming, so no worries, and cheers from Australia 😌 Yeah, I think the themes you mentioned form one side of this song, particularly with the cold war still looming back then!

Your comment 'You don't not what to expect' is exactly how it was in the early days. Queen albums were released without us having heard any of the songs so we would buy the album, rush home and play it never knowing quite what Queen would have in store for us. It was so exciting and NEVER disappointing. Even the lesser known albums track still amaze me today. Ask a Queen fan for their favourite track and it probably won't be one of the better known songs.

Queen actually started out as a rather heavy rock band, definitely on the harder side. But of course Freddie could never be contained within such a narrow framework. And yeah, their harmony vocals was a trademark - Freddie, Brian and Roger had voices that complemented each other unusually well. That and the multitracking of their voices that they pioneered changed popular music.

Brian May wrote this song about growing up in the shadow of the Cold War. He said the song was about life and death and being aware that death is a part of life. The Hammer coming down is a symbol of the Grim Reaper doing his job. Another Brian song you would like is Who Wants To Live Forever. I think the best version is Live in Budapest 1986. It was written for the Highlander soundtrack about an immortal who outlives the ones he loves.
@Steve-ug9ox6 ай бұрын
This song was released during the Cold War. I think the reference may be to Russian flag at that time. The hammer and sickle. I wrote an essay about the song in 1984 for my English class. In general, I think the song is about warfare, and how it could destroy civilisation. The mushroom cloud.
@strider69206 ай бұрын
I was hoping someone would mention that. It was the USSR that had the hammer and sickle (red and yellow) flag. Waiting for the Hammer To Fall was referring to waiting for the Soviet Hammer (Nuclear Bombs) to fall leaving us in the “Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud”.

The Works was the first Queen album I got as a teenager, it just took me in, especially The World We Created and this song. You really should watch the Live Aid concert from one year later - it is considered the best live gig any band ever did (and they did both these songs live there). This is a glam metal song by Brian with a lot of Cold War symbolisms in the lyrics. If you want to listen to really heavy Queen, go for Ogre Battle, Father to Son, Sheer Heart Attack, or Cold Stone Crazy. They can be a real Metal band.

Congratulations, you're as beautiful as your voice and your analysis. I agree with what was suggested in these comments: since you yourself said "no one lives forever", way to go now is reacting to "Who wants to live forever" (soundtrack to the movie "Highlander"). And what you said is true, they've got many good songs; therefore, some of their hits are "forgotten" by young people who react to songs - some good underrated songs, as "Play the game"; "Save me"; "Innuendo"; "One vision"; "A kind of magic".
