Here is some information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990, or ‘91 (depending on which source you cite), he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). His most recent surgery went well. Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

Great reaction. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work.

This song is a landmark moment in music history. There are almost no other single songs that are as impressive and important as this one. It's made me reconsider what I used to think was 'great music'. And in case it isn't obvious - this guy has great depth and range. See how much emotion he can wring from four chords with Chalk Outlines (live) w/ Chinchilla. And then watch Genesis, to see him happy and healthy rapping like a smooth beast over his own killer beats. He's far from a one-trick pony.

Hi John, great reaction to a unique artist, your comments about ADHD and a connection to Ren's style was something I had not heard from others, it made a lot of sense. I think you'll be amazed at his back catalog but I'd recommend Chalk Outlines (duet with Chinchilla) to hear his poignant singing, Tale of Jenny & Screech full trilogy (3 songs, 13 mins long but riveting) for more storytelling and guitar, and The Hunger for his rap skills. There's a bunch more but that's enough to start.

While the Jenny/Screech/Violet trilogy are all one-take live videos, Hi Ren is not. The audio was recorded live, but the video has edits and is combined from two takes, according to Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed it. He talks about it in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's filmmaker reaction to Hi Ren.

Hi John! I’m a 61 year old woman revisiting this reaction because it’s you, that miraculously introduced me to Ren. I don’t say that lightly, shortly before “Hi Ren” I came across your channel by happenstance (my first experience with a reactor ever) and took a liking to your personality! Bottom line…Ren’s artistry and community has been literally life changing for me. Much love and respect my young friend❣️🎶🎸

Please check out “Chalk Outlines”, his trilogy “The Tale of Jenny and Screech” must be the (Full) version, “Money Game, Part 2”, “Power” and for some rapping, try “Genesis”, The Hunger” and “Losing It” but buckle up when he goes into beast mode in the last one! Also, before this, he was in a band called “The Big Push”. Check out their version of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” which they intertwined with “Paranoid”

Oh and BTW Ren has ADHD as well so maybe not so odd that he mixes things up and doesn’t stick to just one genre. He has clearly put his hyper focus to good use 😅 And yeah, it probably also explains why his music is appealing to others with ADHD. I at least love when I don’t know what to expect from an artist or even within one song. Why I absolutely love Japanese bands like Paledusk, Sokoninaru, and Maximum the Hormone. Like I think for many people songs by Paledusk seem too all over the place with all the changes, but I think the fact that our ADHD brains are kinda jumping around from one thought to the next oddly enough means that we sort of just go with the flow when listening to music that does a similar thing? There definitely seems to be a pattern in how many people with ADHD I have seen that love Paledusk. It’s quite interesting. If you haven’t heard of the band before, I highly recommend checking out their music. Maybe start with BLACK ICE or Happy Talk.

I really enjoyed this reaction, thank you! And yes, Ren has ADHD, too. I'd love to see you react to more of Ren's work - it's well worth applying that beautiful ND hyperfocus to! He's such a diverse and brilliant artist.

There is nothing Ren can’t do. He is the most talented musician I think I’ve ever heard/experienced, and I’m 56 years old. Check out his War Pigs live street performance.

Thank you for your great reaction. I recommend the Jenny, Screech and Violet trilogy ( done together), Chalk Outlines, The Hunger and his band The Push covering War Pigs by Black Sabbath

👋Welcome on the Ren train, please dive deeper into his story and music, he is an amazingly talented soul and as an independent artist needs all the support he can get. He is currently in Canada for treatment for Lyme's disease. Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. I'm loving Love Music 1,2,3 , Ocean and I highly recommend The tales of Jenny, Screech & Violet there is a 'full version' here on YT( it has to be in that order) May I suggest you pulling up the lyrics if you are diving into his music because sometimes his rapping is so fast, having the words help you break down his message, often they are under in the comments of his tunes or on Google X

The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full) is a must react. It’s mind blowing. It’s a trilogy of Shakespearean proportions.

Apologies for this comment unload but I need to stress that for Jenny/Screech that you listen to the lyrics carefully. Seen too many reaction channels miss things because they’re TOO focused on other things. *just got to the end of your vid and yeah, Sick Boi is a good one too.*

Great reaction! So I would suggest to watch the tale of jenny and screech, it's a trilogy ending in violet's tale, and I would say to watch them in full so you can understand the whole story. 👍 enjoy

Ren can be hard to define, but I think most simplistically is that he is first and foremost a storyteller and the tone and style of his music changes to fit the story he is telling. On a side note it's also worth mention that you can see the guitar and mike connected up because this whole piece was recorded as a one shot take. Took him 4 goes to get the take he liked. For other stuff to look at, it's worth going through his channel at kzbin.info/door/qq3VcwPGseErHUa0-xLInQ and the band he plays with at www.youtube.com/@TheBigPushBand (Or if you want to go random you can check him out a decade ago in Trick The Fox at www.youtube.com/@trickthefox) A lot of reactors are doing Hi Ren, Hunger, the Tale of jenny and Screech, Sick Bio, Chalk Outlines and others. As a metal head maybe the War Pigs cover on The Big Push channel might be fun.

Everything I’ve heard from Ren has been wonderful, but I’d say go check out chalk outlines live simply because you have to hear him sing “properly” (whatever that means lol). Also he can rap rap really fast fast, but more on that another time. I cannot decide which flavour of Ren is my fave … Bardcore storytelling, hard rap, Jeff Buckley esque crooning, playing classic covers in the street? Idk.
