#DirtBikeCourse #MSF
Kody is interested in riding dirt, so you can bet I jumped on that to sign us up for a class. Here we are taking one of MSF's many courses, our first DirtBike class at the Honda Rider Education Center in Alpharetta, GA. I've been riding street for 5 years and Kody rode street for about a year before deciding it wasn't for him. I hope to be a better rider and am taking all the riding classes I can get. Plus, learning is fun - and I want to keep practicing my skills the rest of my riding career. For me, learning doesn't stop at the certification class.

You did great for a beginner at dirt bike riding. In dirt/trail riding you will fall and you will learn something from them all. But most importantly it may save your life on the street one day. I started riding on dirt 53 years ago. 10 years before I could get my license to street ride. This experience will greatly increase your confidence on both street and trail over time. Remember the point is to have fun while you learn.

I grew up riding in the dirt, I started when I was about 4 years old and never stopped, I am 55 and still ride dirt, it has saved my bacon so many times on the road. Your comment made me think about crashes I have seen and those watched on KZbin. If a rider goes into a turn and loses traction at the rear wheel, most of the time, he will either brake more to slow down and the already loose rear tire just swings further forward or they will try to stand the bike back up and wash out the front tire trying to stay on the road. The real answer is to just keep riding and reduce throttle to let the rear tire hook back up. Riding in the dirt is practice riding with no traction. I watched a video of you, I think, running on a flat track a month or so past. Running in circles, rear wheel spinning throwing mud and gravel through every turn. You weren't controlling the motorcycle with the brakes, you were controlling it with throttle and counter steering. Controlling the loss of traction.

I had the thing you described happen to me when taking a turn at a freeway interchange, lost the back end at 50 mph. I'm positive that dirt riding is what kept me up, if for no other reason than I didn't panic.

I agree! I'm one of the guys who got a dirt bike a couple of years before a driver's license and realllllly glad I learned to ride dirt first. Traction is most important on any bike and learning to ride and balance with reduced traction is key. I believe that dirt riding techniques saved my butt a few times on the road in the many years I've been riding.

Doodle Dirt will teach you survival skills that will keep you alive on the street! The street riding is "Proactive' while dirt is "Reactive". The street is tight and predictable. The dirt is loose and unpredictable. I've been riding dirt since I was a kid. I had 12 dirt bikes before I turned 18. This will hone your mad skills and you and Cody can do this together! Keep riding DIRT!!! Great video Doodle! Ride SAFE and BE safe Lady! 👏🙌👌👍✌🖖🤙👋🙂

I started riding dirt bikes when I was 9 years old. I learned how to deal with dirt, rocks, sand, gravel, and all that pretty early. That was forty-ish years ago. I took about 30 years off from riding, but those skills that I developed back then helped me when I started back riding. It seems, at least in my case, that it’s easier to go from dirt to street than it is the other way around. My wife, who started out on the street, was terrified of the dirt at first. She’s doing better and gaining confidence, but it doesn’t happen overnight. I enjoyed the video, and I hope y’all end up getting dirt bikes!

IMHO, All riders should learn on dirt first then move to pavement. You learn quickly on dirt not to panic brake the front. You just don't do it. You do you fall, as just one example.

Curious, what bad habits did you bring? I also learned on dirt and took my dirt bike on pavement many times. I can't think of a single bad habit. I learned not to panic break. I learned to plan your path, know your road before pushing the bike. Don't get in a hurry. when in doubt, slow down. Don't panic break on the front. In many instances break with the rear first then the front to avoid front wheel panic breaking. I may have some bad habits which is why I'm asking you. I could have some and not know it. Any advice is appreciated.

@@spartanx169x So im talking 40 years ago, drum front brakes that were terrible off road. I was in the habit of rear brake only, first year riding on the street had to tell myself out load" front brake, front brake!". Also turned the bike with the throttle, no countersteer. I guess it was things i had to relearn more than bad habbits per say. But like i said, overall, dirt riders wind up being great street riders!

Now you've put your money where your mouth is, I think you did pretty well. You had a minor fall, which is a good reason not to use your Triumph! It was good to see the response to your social media request, shows the power of doodle! Counter-weighting can't be easy, especially on difficult terrain, but would be a great skill to master. I'm looking forward to seeing you both riding the trails, and above all, stay safe!💗💑💗

GOOD TIMES! I think your observation about street riders with dirt experience is correct. IMO it's about staying loose on the bike, dirt riding makes the bike jump all over and as a street rider I can understand your nervousness, street is all about grip, but for me, dirt is all about getting loose! Just know it's there, and ride it out on the throttle, that's the way I rock it!

Once you learn to ride down a Sandy hill, you've got it. The key is to keep the wheels rolling. As the rear brake locks up, the back end will try to come around. Ease off the rear brake and the rear wheel will start rolling again and it will behave naturally

I'm one of the many ppl who grew up dirt riding. I started around age 14, and rode about 4 years before I ever rode on the street. Never had a class in dirt riding, just learned by doing. By the time I got to the street, it was a piece of cake. You look like you both had a lot of fun! Hope to see the trail riding video!
@WRjockey
@WRjockey 3 жыл бұрын
I think I should clarify what I mean by "piece of cake." I mean that by the time I began street riding, I never had to think twice about bike operation or handling. AND, it almost seemed like I was cheating... ("wait......you mean I can actually have this much traction - for free???!") ;);) That's not to say that street riding doesn't come with its own set of challenges. But since I didn't have to think about operating the bike, I could devote my full attention to other drivers and the situations around me. That's why I am 100% convinced it is much better to start riding in the dirt, before street riding - for those who are able to do so. I realize that isn't the case for a lot of people. And for those people, I think MSF dirt riding courses are a great idea!!!

He sold off his share this year and is now teaching at the very dirt school you visited. Just some way to spend his time and help the sport we love. You and Kody should get a couple of adventure bikes and go back to TWOS and join the North Georgia crowd. I assure you, you will never feel unsafe at TWOS again. There are hundreds of great forest service roads surrounding TWOS that you will not need a lot of dirt skills to ride, but will find adventure around every corner. My KZbin page has lots of footage of riding street and trail while base camped at TWO/TWOS. Don't let fear control you!

You will develop more motorcycle skills & grow with them to make you a better rider anywhere including the assault. The skills just develop more naturally & your confidence grows every time you ride. I love to see your husband & you riding together, because it needs to be more common in family’s that ride. Dirt riding is the best way to to learn and understand how a motorcycle works, and handles. Every street rider should be a fluent dirt rider, why? Because it gives you the experience on how to recover safely from an emergency, evasive maneuver. Trust me on that one. If it wasn't for the experience of knowing how to slide my bike, I would not be here writing this. Dirt riders do make better defensive street riders. I'm 58, and grew up around motorcycle racing all my life(from trials to World Formula 750, now Moto GP) Dirt riders do make better street riders(and racers) I currently own a KTM EXCF 500, and believe me, I'm not 58 with that horsepower at my beckoning call! Be safe out there Doodle, dirt riding will elevate your riding experience, and it will give you a safer feeling on the roads (wet, dry, and sometimes sandy) Cheers Doodle, from British Columbia 🇨🇦

Our roads are usually very crowded mostly by other two wheelers, but it's a bit expensive ( until recently) to afford a dirt bike as usually most people can afford only one bike for everyday commute so dirt bikes are really for enthusiasts. Until RE introduced the Himalayan there were really not many Dirt bikes that many can afford. Many companies are now following its lead Himalayan is really changing the riders opportunities for having experience in diverse riding just as you.

I took this course a few years ago at the same facility. It was free because they were trying to get more instructors trained. I never dropped the bike. You have to really really trust the bike because it will move all around in that dirt. You have to really relax and just trust you’ll be ok. 🤷🏾‍♂️😌 I’ve never ridden again and I probably will stick to the street because riding standing up hurt every muscle in my body!

I can't agree with you more. People with a little dirt experience are better riders on the road. (I might be a little bias.) That is exactly the kind of course I'd recommend most people to take. If all they ever do is that basic class that would help them a lot. The main thing about taking the dirt courses is to learn how to ride through loss of traction situations instead of giving up and "layin' 'er down".

Just bought the 2022 Africa Twin dct. Coming from Goldwings big Street bikes not sure I really want to get too crazy in the dirt with this one. I have had a couple Klr650‘s before. I’m afraid of dropping my fancy $20,000 bike. I’ll probably just stay to powerline roads and highway

Why did Kody quit riding street bikes? As for me, I started riding dirt bikes a few years before I was able to get a driver's license. I loved it (and still own and ride dirt bikes to this day) and got a lot of practice doing it because I enjoyed it so much. By the time I got my motorcycle operator's license (I got my motorcycle license before my automobile license) I had gotten good at riding dirt bikes, and that's when I realized that compared to riding dirt bikes off-road, riding my motorcycle on the street seemed so easy by comparison. I gradually worked my way up to very powerful and quick motorcycles like the YZF750R, YZF-R6, FZ-1, and YZF-R1, having lots of good rides on these bikes. Now, I have downsized my street bike choices over the past few years and currently ride a 2020 MT-03, a bike I am enjoying a whole lot. Through all of my street riding, I know for a fact that my dirt bike riding had helped make me a better motorcycle rider.

What made you downsize from R1 to MT03?
@YZEtc
@YZEtc 2 жыл бұрын
@@thumpertorque_ I eventually and gradually ended up on the MT-03. It wasn't something that happened in one day. At the time, I was riding a 2003 FZ-1, and I'd been riding 600 - 1,000cc, four-cylindered bikes for fourteen years and riding that FZ-1 for nearly four years. I'd typically keep a bike for two or three years of use, and I felt it was getting time to sell or trade-in the FZ-1 for something else. Because of this, I was starting to look at bikes on the showroom floor of my local dealer, and it was then that I realized I didn't want to consider another 1,000cc bike, but instead, I was looking at and thinking about smaller bikes. I ended up trading the FZ-1 in toward a new 2007 SV650. Since then, my biggest bike was a 2015 FZ-07, and today ride the MT-03 and a CRF450RL. So, no event happened to make me quickly decide to downsize in bikes, but it was after years on bigger bikes, enjoying them, and then gradually coming to the conclusion that a smaller-displacing bike would actually be a better match for how I ride and where I ride. I haven't had a desire for a bigger bike since.

I would recommend every rider start on smaller dirt bikes when they are new to motorcycles . You learn better braking , turning , weight positioning and control on all surfaces . Start your kids riding small 4 stroke dirt bikes by age 10 move them up to bigger bikes by 13 - 15 years old and by the time are old enough ride the street they will good skilled riders.
