@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I think it might have been that you did not put the mill on a flat concrete surface
@darekheide52164 жыл бұрын
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I would guess either bending the hitch cause of the sawmill weight or not using the de-barker. That dirt filled bark will wear and ruin blades much faster.

You only rolled the log and sawed 3 sides before sawing your boards. Otherwise, you would not have to go back and cut the bark edge off the boards.

Great tool. Remember when cutting your boards you don’t need to stop and remove the boards each time, just keep cutting till you are done. You get a nice stack with less work. I helped my neighbor restore a ‘93 LT 40 E super. Has a 3 phase electric motor , he also bought a surplus Army generator set. Electrics needed a bunch or work, but it all works.

Thanks for taking us through your learning process on the sawmill. Those things are awesome machines, and the lumber out of an oak or other local tree is particularly nice. Also, it feels good to know you’re using it near its home. I used salvaged red oak from my farm to make bed frames and shelves in the Phoenix Farmhouse. I’m using 6” squares of it for mounting antlers too. Just a great feeling, that. As for your mistake, it’s probably the debarker staying idle on that dirty bark log. That and overloading your ATV hitch! Hope it isn’t bent too bad. Take care, and thanks for the video. Cheers from Summerfield.

The best strategic advice you gave in this video is to set your mill up as a stationary unit. That allows you to work under cover and keep all you tools and equipment in one place. Being mobile is more trouble than it is worth. Also, going electric rather than diesel or gas is a total game-changer. No fuel, very, very little maintenance, quiet and cheaper to buy, even if you need to purchase and install a phase converter. I purchased an electric LT50 almost ten years ago to replace my gas powered unit and it has been a money-maker since day one. It is much cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, cheaper to maintain and cuts 2 to 3 times faster than the diesel unit. It costs about 25 cents an hour to run and I cut dimensional lumber from 3 to 4 12"+ diameter by 12' long logs per hour. Now that is a money-maker. Keep up the good work, Josh, love your videos :)

Grew up using a buzz saw on a Farmall M. Stepdad had friends in the sawmill biz. He would get a couple bundles at a time. Usually around Thanksgiving when it was good and cool in the morning he would say .. come on, we gotta cut some slabs. Lol of course I got to pick em up and split a good bunch for kindling. Didn't care much for it then but good memories now. Be safe sir.

Forgot the debarker didn't you? Just more wear on the blade, but it does make a difference. Also be careful if you do any walnut. That sawdust is toxic to your land because of the high tannin in the wood. If you saw any of that just clean up before and after keeping the walnut sawdust separate for burning. Enjoy your new toy.

Even At today's prices you would have to have one heck of a pile of logs to equal $10k. Edit: I just saw the pile, unless there is a bunch of those that's maybe $1000 worth of logs. Those don't look like peelers either, at least several of them that I quickly looked at. Just saying this as a Forester. This gets people thinking their few yard trees they want cut are worth thousands when they see things like this.

That's great Josh! Was impressed how fast it ate through the log. The hydraulic system for lifting and turning the log was equally impressive - definitely saves your back. I wish you were closer to custom cut some of my poplar logs and for me to buy some of that oak! I know you like things to look nice so I would suggest moving the sawmill to somewhere out of the way and not in the front yard - you will produce more sawdust than you can compost (plus scraping sawdust will mess up the grass)and the dunnage, first and second cut slabs, and piled lumber will accumulate quickly and it will take over that area of the yard. Quite enjoyed this video! Lovely piece of ash you gave to the neighbor. Good job all the way around!

Hey Josh, loved your video today. Do you have it way too easy with all that automatic stuff. I think you have to get in there and load the logs up by hand (no power). Also, I think you can run that blade back thru the log and cut several times before you need to unload it.
@chrissheathewoodguy4 жыл бұрын
only giving a few ideas. your going to want to get wax for the ends of the logs. it helps with the checking . second is you never leave the blade in gaged and walk in the front or the sides. That's in wood Mizer's hand book and a general rule. I did not see how your stacking the wood. but using stickers every ft apart is best. we use colored wax . red for hard woods, green for softer woods. blue for specialty lumber. Cherry and walnut. some neat idea for the future you might enjoy is building a solar kiln. we put our wood Mizer in a long covered building were we can load and unload logs or slabs from either side. Put a i beam and a electric winch to lift logs to turn over or move forward and back. I wish you the best with the mill. you'll learn as time goes on.

Being independent is one of the most amazing thing for a human , the freedom of MINIMAL dependency from others ``saving´´ money can be relocated in other things . For MINIMAL dependency we need someone to learn from that way we make less mistakes. Are we really saving money ? Are we really became more efficient ? Why armed forces emphasize in team work , why they have an specialist for every wire nut and bolt ? That specialists was trained to become independent. Sometimes is most cost-effective having MINIMAL dependency . I admired everything you build for your family your determination your work ethic and more important your love for the land and country .... Asking for help , paying $100 too someone sometimes save us thousands ..... Sometimes i got mad too myself paying someone for such an easy task sometimes i pay too much thinking thats looks easy i can do it myself ... Just saying.....
