Joey Tempest the lead singer for Europe said the song was inspired by the cold war and the arms race that threatened to destroy the world. Joey said '' it's about tension, that cold feeling. But it was a hopeful song. It doesn't look back at a history that is sad, it looks forward to a future that's hopeful'' I loved the song when it came out and still to this day love the song, I see it used in many commercials these days.. The good ol days of music ... Thanks so much for another awesome reaction video!

I was 14 when this came out, but got a slight sense of that...but seeing it again now that theme became glaring pretty early on in the song. Great theme, especially for the times. Cold War was pretty amped up then so I'm guessing that added to the hype around this already fantastic 80s song

It was better quality and raw talent. The groups were not artificially put together, no autotune, and no "sales businesses" with PR people. Today, there's so much else going on! All women seem to be forced to perform half-naked. All guys have to look as models. In the old days, vocals and instruments were important. Most artists wrote the songs themselves. They both composed and wrote the lyrics. And this was the way to do it in all countries. Beatles, Rolling Stones, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Bowie, Prince, Springsteen, Queen, and so on! Some person in the neighbourhood had their windows wide open, playing that song (I believe, it was number 1 in the Dutch Top 40 at the time). I was 10 years old and I thought: "Wow! What a great song!" Still a huge fan of Europe. It think, it's sad, that most people only know Europe for "The Final Countdown", "Rock The Night" and "Carrie". They have so many other great songs. Europe is a Swedish rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979,[5] by lead vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson, and drummer Tony Reno. They obtained a major breakthrough in Sweden in 1982 by winning the televised competition "Rock-SM" (Swedish Rock Championships); it was the first time this competition was held, and Europe became a larger success than the competition itself. Europe rose to international fame in the 1980s with their third album, 1986's The Final Countdown. As of 2003, Europe has sold 10 million albums worldwide.[6] The band has had two top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (The Final Countdown and Out of This World)[7] and three top 30 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ("The Final Countdown", "Rock the Night" and "Carrie", which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100).[8] Europe went on hiatus in 1992, reunited temporarily for a one-off performance in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999 and announced an official reunion in 2003. Since then the band has released six albums, Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015) and Walk the Earth (2017).

In 1986, Europe (the band) became the most successful band from Sweden since Abba w/ their 3rd album 'The Final Countdown' becoming a global hit and selling 3x platinum in the US alone. The band was formed by vocalist Joey Tempest (real name Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) in the late 70' as Force... renamed Europe in the early 80's w/ John Leven (bass), John Norum (guitar) and Tony Reno (drums)... They released 2 successful albums in Sweden - 'Europe' (1983) and 'Wings of tomorrow' (1984)... before they were signed internationally. Joey Tempest wrote the songs for Europe and one of them was an anthemic keyboard piece... He showed it to the band's new member Mic Michaeli (keyboards) who played it on the album 'The Final Countdown'... Ian Haughland (drums) joined and the album was released in 1986... Soon, guitarist John Norum quit Europe, unhappy w/ the band's commercial direction... Kee Marcelo (guitar) did the tour and joined Europe as more hits came - 'Rock the night' ... 'Carrie' ... 'Cherokee'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 The problem was that Europe couldn't record a 'Final countdown Part 2'... They returned in 1988 w/ the album 'Out of this world'... and it sounded different... Europe were hoping for a massive tour of N. America in 1989 after the album sold platinum... but none of the singles - 'Superstitious' ... 'Open your heart' ... 'Let the good times rock'... had the same impact commercially. The US tour never happened after the European and Asian tours ... Europe tried again in 1991 w/ the album 'Prisoners in paradise'... but w/ Nirvana and the 90's grunge rock scene decimating the popularity of 80's rock bands, Europe were left in the lurch... The band split up in 1992. After reuniting for a 1999 New Years Eve show for the new millennium, Europe soon reunited the 'Final Countdown' line-up of Tempest/ Norum/ Leven/ Michaeli/ Haughland and released 'Start from the dark' in 2004... but Europe were unwilling to recreate their 80's sound. As a result, subsequent albums failed commercially, but Europe has continued to tour successfully on the popularity of their 80's records til today.

Europe were active as a band until around 1992, where they took a "break" but never officially broke up. And you are actually not quite wrong about it being a New Year's Eve song. The organizers of the turn of the millennium celebration in Sweden (where Europe are from) offered the band a massive amount of money to perform TFC as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. It was a one of a kind moment as for the first time both guitarists that had been in the band (John Norum, founding member in this video, and Kee Marcello, his replacement until their break in 1992) were on stage at the same time. It was the only time the guitar solo was ever played as it is on the record with two guitars in harmony. After that, the original lineup seen in this video (Joey Tempest, vocals; John Norum, lead guitar; John Leven, bass; Mic Michaeli, keyboards and Ian Haugland, drums) had commitments to fill but having felt a spark at that reunion, decided to reform in late 2003, releasing their first album with that lineup for the first time since the TFC album in 1986. They have been together ever since, and while their music is more heavy and blues-rock oriented now and Joey, while still an amazing vocalist, cannot sing quite this high anymore (I mean, who can after more than 40 years!), they have released several more albums, perform and tour (as recently as last weekend!) and are working on a new album to be released in 2025. TFC was #1 in 1986 in 26 countries simultaneously... except the United States. Ironically, a few years back Geico approached the band about doing the song in a commercial, and they did, giving them their first USA #1 on the Rock charts as a result of people like yourself discovering the song. They end every show with it even today, as a gift of appreciation to their fans; here's a performance from Rock In Rio 2024: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKqQgXynrtuMlbM and yes, this is the same lineup as in the TFC video, more than 40 years later. 🙂

I had this vinyl album and I knew every song by heart. This was my favorite and the song Carrie which was the rock ballad I guess. I lived in Germany because my father was in the military when I was in middle school from 1981 to 1984. So I knew of them before this song came out. They were so popular in Europe no pun intended. And of course I knew all of the British bands and I also knew of Falco which you should definitely check out his song Amadeus. You will trip out on that one. It is hilarious it's partially in English but mostly in German and it was a huge song in the States sorry the US. Also the song by Nena 99 Luftballoons was very popular of course in Germany because she was from Germany but weirdly enough the German version of the song was more popular in the States even though she did an English version of the song. That's another good one to check out too. It's about nuclear war actually. We used to have bomb threats a lot at our high school in Germany, West Germany at the time. We had more bomb threat drills than we had fire drills. And then when I was in elementary school we lived in North Central Texas at Shepherd Air Force Base and we head tornado drills more than we had fire drills. Being a military brat growing up was interesting I have to say. As you know. Another great reaction! It's hard to keep up with you sometimes. Lol! Congratulations on 300,000 subscribers! In America, Europe is known for major hit "The Final Countdown" and a lesser hit "Carrie". In other parts of the world they are known for a huge catalogue.

Superstitious was also a hit in the US!

@@ricomajestic The Final Countdown hit #8 on Billboard... Carrie hit #3 on Billboard... Superstitious hit #31 on Billboard and was the last time Europe charted in the US. The Final Countdown and Carrie are considered 80's classics and still heavily played on radio today.

@@xcellent-records I wouldn't call Carrie a classic. It is a very plain ballad and not even the best of the 80s. I don't know anyone that remembers the song. Final Countdown became iconic and a classic but not Carrie! Superstitious was still a hit and in my opinion a better song than Carrie!

Great reaction. I really like Europe. They are the first band I ever saw live when I was 13 or 14 years old. This song was written for a friend of the band who needed a song for the opening of his disco. Personally I prefer a lot of their songs they released after reuniting with their original guitarist John Norum in the early 2000s. They are from Sweden.

The song that turned Europe into global superstars!! Singer Joey Tempest made a demo that he kinda forgot about then when he rediscovered it he realized it was something to actually build on. So that demo eventually became this song long story short! This song was like i said a smash hit all around the world in the mid '80s. The band was hit by the music curse never really made it again. Eventually they split up and they all went different ways and that could've been the end of the story. However as the turn of century was approaching rumours were saying they would reunite and play on new ears eve!. The members denied it at first since nothing was really certain however eventually they did comfirm a temporary gig on new years eve. A few years later they decided to reunite for real not just for one gig.

I was 15 and in a babtismal (prep) camp when this was the biggest hit and this Final Countdown was the guitar riff to learn. I just cannot fathom someone in my age hearing it first time now. At least in Finland DJs in icehockey games use(d) the part you remember for exhaustion for "goal song". I have heard this in NHL games, too.

The song was initially made just to be the concert opener and based on a keyboard riff written by Joey Tempest and the lyrics were inspired by David Bowie's song, "Space Oddity."

I've seen them live some years back at a festival. They played this as their first and last track. I truly didn't know any of their other songs and they knew that was true for most people there, which is why they played it twice. Still if you're gonna be a One Hit Wonder - what a hit to be known for.

I remember going to Tower Records to buy this cassette tape back in the 80's! I was so excited to buy it, but I ended up having to go through 11 different cassette cases before it actually was a Europe Final Countdown cassette! The rest were an unknown cassette at the time, Beastie Boys License To Ill! This was about 2 months before the Beastie Boys really took off! I remember thinking later that I wish I could have held onto one of those tapes at that time!

The group is from the land of my ancestors, Sweden. If you listen, you can hear the accent. Carrie was the other one I remember most as a hit. As one that wasn't a big hit, at least not that I am aware of, but that I really love, is Girl from Lebanon from their Prisoners in Paradise album. It was later in their career. It's about something and I really love the guitar in it. It's worth a listen. They don't all have to be the big hits.
