You could think of the name of this song as just Bohemian. Rhapsody is the style of it's arrangement. A Rhapsody has a beginning a middle and an end 3 to 5 parts. Prince has a Rhapsody that's pretty good as well. I cannot think of any other artist at the moment that incorporate Rhapsody's into their discography. I wouldn't mind if there were more that did.

Many consider the Bohemian Rhapsody (BoRap) video to be the first music video in history (even though it technically was not). Prior to this, groups would produce a video showing them on a stage lip-syncing to the record to market the song to promoters. 'The videos were rarely seen by the public. But Queen created the video for Bohemian Rhapsody for a different purpose. They created this video to solve two problems they had. The first problem they had to overcome is the way Bohemian Rhapsody was recorded. There are so many overdubs that there is no way the whole song could be replicated or lip-synced live. The second problem was they were scheduled to leave on a long tour just a little more than a week after the song's release so they would not be available to promote it. . To solve their problems, Queen dreamed up the concept of this video and hired a film (not a video) director to shoot the film. The idea was that since Queen would not be available to promote the song on shows like Top of the Pops (TOTP was a British music chart program), their video could be. Back in the 70s, for any song to be successful, the artist had to perform (lip-synch) their song on TOTP. They would stand live on the TOTP stage and lip-synch to their song on live BBC TV. Of course, the bass nor the electric guitar would not be plugged into an amp (actually there would be no amp in sight) because TOTP didn't want any Iive sound. TOTP even provided a special drum set that had plastic hi-hats so they wouldn't make a sound. Queen hated performing at TOTP but it was a necessary evil. But this time, Queen sent this video in place of them performing. TOTP loved it and played the video numerous times. It was so successful that other artists began creating their own videos and the BoRap video is credited with pioneering the format that would later be broadcast on MTV (which it kind of did). The six-minute promotional video, as it was called, was shot over only a few (4) hours by director Bruce Gowers - at a budget of either £3,500 or £4,500 (the amount is disputed). Decades later, Queen received its first and only MTV Music Video Award in the Best Video From a Film category. The video worked. The “Bohemian Rhapsody” video was shown on TOTP for the first time ten days after filming, on November 20, and the song climbed the charts. "Bohemian Rhapsody," released originally in 1975, is the creation of Freddie Mercury but he never told anyone what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics. Freddie often wrote in metaphors so I would not suggest trying to take these lyrics literally. He wanted listeners to be able to apply to the song whatever meaning it had to them personally. Not what it meant to him. BTW - Freddie did admit that it was composed of three separate songs that he had been working on but could not seem to finish. So he decided to mash them together, adding some transitions and bridges, and created "Bohemian Rhapsody". "Bohemian Rhapsody" can be broken down into 6 parts: Part I is the "Into". The video image shows the four members of Queen singing and harmonizing the lyrics of the "Intro" in acapella. In reality, it is only Freddie's voice you hear on the recording. Freddie laid down 5 separate tracks of himself singing and harmonizing with himself. (FYI - multi-tracking and overdubbing runs rampant in Bohemian Rhapsody.) Next is the "Ballad" portion of the song ('Mama, just killed a man'). Freddie had worked on this song for years but it never had a name. The other members of Queen tentatively titled it "Freddie's Cowboy Song". The lyrist Tim Rice (who wrote the lyrics for "Jesus Christ, Superstar", "Evita", "Alladin", "The Lion King", ...) was a close friend of Freddie's and believes this portion of the song’s lyrics were about Freddie confessing to his fans that he was gay (a radical and scary thing to do in 1975). The third section is the guitar solo. This is the only part of Bohemian Rhapsody not written by Freddie. Freddie told Brian that he wanted a guitar solo in the song and where he wanted it to fit into the song but left it to Brian to create. Brian wanted to have his guitar effectively sing a verse that would inject a different melody. He heard something in his head. He said that he could hear this melody and had no idea where it came from. That melody isn’t anywhere else in the song, but it’s on a familiar chord sequence, so it dovetails in quite nicely. The guitar solo leads to the fourth section the "Operatic" section. Freddie not only loved Rock but he loved Opera. He was always fascinated with the idea of combining rock and opera. It took 3 weeks to record "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the "Operatic" section was much smaller when they began recording but Freddie kept adding to it. Various lyrics in the "Operatic" section seem to refer to the band members. Freddie appears to cast himself as the character, Scaramouch, a stock clown of 16th-century Italian literature who dances around making a fool of himself but speaks the truth. Galileo who was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer definitely refers to Brian (Queen's lead guitarist) who in real life is Dr. Brian May, a scholar with a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. Figaro refers to the Mozart opera, "The Marriage of Figaro" and it is a subtle way to reference Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) who has a four-range vocal span (E2-E6) and was even frequently cited as hitting E5 in live performances while playing the drums. Freddie compared Roger's voice to a dog whistle. The final reference of Magnifico is Queen's bass guitarist, John Deacon, who has a degree in Electrical Engineering. John is the creator of the "Deacy Amp" which when connected to Brian May's homemade guitar (the Red Special) through a treble-booster could produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals. It is hard to realize that it is only Freddie, Brian, and Roger singing in the "Operatic" section (John never sang on the records). This was 1975, well before digital recordings and autotune. Recordings were made using 24-track analog tape. The limits of tape made it necessary for the three vocalists to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. Some sections of Bohemian Rhapsody feature 180 separate overdubs! The fifth section is the "Hard Rock" portion. In this section, Freddie sings angry lyrics addressed to an unspecified "you", accusing them of betrayal and abuse and insisting "can't do this to me, baby", before the final lines conclude with him singing, "just gotta get right outta here". FYI - the "Operatic" and the "Hard Rock" sections of BoRap were featured in a scene in the 1992 film Wayne's World, in which the main character and his friends headbang in a car to the rock part. Because of the success of Wayne's World, Bohemian Rhapsody was re-released in the U.S. in 1992 and rose to Number 2 on the Billboard chart. In the sixth and final section, the "Outro" returns back to the "Ballad" to close the circle of the song and ends with the sound of a Chinese gong. Welcome to the world of Queen.

Nice reaction. You should check out White Queen - Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975, for another very beautiful song, with great piano and guitar playing. Bohemian Rhapsody is progressive rock, it is the most well known progressive rock song. It is the most complex form of rock, where you combine rock with classical or jazz music. Bohemian Rhapsody is one the most complex popular songs the song has 49 different chords, most song today have between 1 - 4 different chords. Bohemian Rhapsody is a rock opera, written by Freddie Mercury. He started writing the song in college around 1968 and only completed the song in 1975. It is a story or a journey, that can be taken literally or more symbolically. Freddie Mercury never explained the song, he liked the idea of people interpreting the song for themselves. The basic story is a young man who confesses to his mother that he has killed someone, he then takes responsibility for his actions. the opera or middle section is a trial for his soul between heaven and hell. in the rock section he becomes angry and frustrated by his lot, in the end or the coda he finally accepts his fate. He goes through the 5 stages of grieve. But the song can also be more symbolical, in that it someone who kills a part of himself. In the middle section he has to fight his own demons he succeed triumphantly, and at the end when he sings the same line, nothing really matter it means something different, because he has gone on a journey. There are a lot of interpretations of the song. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the best selling songs of all time, it remains a culturally iconic song.

I love it when I see the words"Queen" and "first time" together. Oh goody! I promise you that if you jump into the Queen rabbit hole you will absolutely build your subscriber base. I really recommend White Queen. It will break your brain, but it absolutely 100% has to be the 1975 live version at the Hammersmith Odeon. The studio is good. The live version at the Rainbow (I believe 1974 but I'm not positive) is good. Neither come even close to the Odeon version. Try Somebody To Love and Save Me live in Montreal in 1981. The entire 20 minute set at Live Aid in 1985. Are you seeing a theme here? Most Queen songs are better live. So sit back, buckle up, hands and feet inside the ride at all times!

Freddie was working on writing three different songs when he had the genius inspiration to combine them into this epic masterpiece. Nothing like it before or since. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which premiered in 1975, is widely considered the first-ever promotional music video of its time, per KZbin, kickstarting a promotional strategy that would become industry standard. The Bruce Gowers-directed clip was shot in three hours for roughly $5,600 at the band’s rehearsal space.

There are no harmonies at the start of this it's all just Fred singing with himself, and the middle section Roger hits the high notes, but again majority is Fred singing with himself, you'll need to watch the making of this song on Queen official KZbin channel it's about an hour long, it's a complex way to record, but the song and how Fred wanted it too sound was in his head, they were the first ones to make a music video like this

No harmonies???!?! It's all harmonious. Freddy is harmonizing with himself. Multitrack and doubled and tripled. Brad doubt from Boston did the same thing. When asked why he is the only singer, he said, "Who better to harmonize with than with yourself?" I'm sure you misspoke, but it is all harmony. :-)

Freddy Mercury was dangerous much in the same way goldfish aren't. The man he killed was himself, metaphorically. The straight boy, Faruqe, raised in a strict eastern religion, who was engaged the girl he loved very much, died once the band began to be successful and his world expanded. He realized he was gay, and he was carrying a lot of guilt for the pain he caused his loved ones.
