Yeah and for these reasons I think Tony Todd's performance as Kurn established what a Klingon proper is like. Nothing against Dorn, who certainly nailed Worf, but Worf is a multi culti Klingon not a "real" one.

I do love the subtlety of his performance there, because he's eager to try the food, yet concerned... and then when Picard tells him about the Caviar, Kurn bows his head slightly. He's truly humbled to have his commander share what would be seen as "the spoils of war" on a Klingon ship.
@patsk8872

I always wondered why they would choose turkey and caviar for the meal. I mean, they knew the klingon food choices. There are plenty of human foods that would have been more compatible and less "bland" than a freaking roast turkey. I guess the writers just wanted the small plot point for contrast.

@@patsk8872 He also didn't want a bridge set, he wanted everyone to just sit around the conference room and talk about things and then when they made a decision speak to the computer and tell it to do whatever and resolve the situation outside the room. By the time TNG was in production, he was a full blown nut, high on his own ego built up by years of people praising him and making him out to be some kind of messiah because he once wrote a TV pilot in 1964. Practically every decision he had a hand in on TNG was wrong.

The fun thing is you can really see how the way treating Worf truly is worse than the others. He's tough because he indicates he expects much. Not being tough on Worf then kind of reads as "I don't think much of you in comparison" and a way to goad him to ultimately test his worth. (Which he passes.) It is odd though none of the humans seemed to pick up on this.

My favorite scene has always been when Picard goes into Captain mode at the end and Worf snaps to. Than when Worf says he will be silent Picard physically stands down. Such subtle movements say so much about the characters and the actors talent. Tony Todd and several other Start Trek guest actors did a low budget movie written by a Star Trek writer I think you guys would like. It's on Prime and called The Man from Earth. Very basic movie that is just a group of academics sitting in a guys living room trying to decide if a fantastic story a friend is telling them is real.

A subtle way they tease that Kurn is Worf’s brother is with his ridges. Worf and Kurn who are brothers share the same forehead ridges. Other families will have their own designs. This is something that will be kept consistent that Klingons who are closely related will share the same ridge pattern.

It's wild how epic this episode is. It starts with the officer exchange story and fleshes it out quite well before we learn it's a ruse, Worf has an unknown brother and we end up on the Klingons' home planet with a believable threat to the empire. And it includes an attack on both Kurn and Picard to boot. Yet it never feels rushed at all.

*_You were correct that the actor playing K'mpec was in Star Trek V, but wrong that he was playing the same character as he played Korrd. It is certainly not the first (or last) time that an actor plays multiple roles with the extended Star Trek Universe and, like in some cases where the actor plays the same race within different time periods, it was retroactively stated that K’mpec is the Nephew of Korrd (Hence their resemblance) and that he (After a long time of proving himself as a warrior, captain and eventually becoming leader of the High Council) restored his family honor after the disgraceful fall of his uncle_*

I don't know if I'd agree with the commenters saying this is one of the best of all Star Trek or even TNG, but it's definitely a good one and I expected you guys would like it. Aside from starting the Klingon arc of TNG, what's clear in hindsight is that this is most likely a continuation of the events of The Defector. That situation only got resolved because of the intervention of the Klingons, aided by the only Klingon in Starfleet and serving aboard the Federation flagship so a high-profile posting. And the Klingons just HAPPEN to capture a Romulan ship that contains information on the Khitomer massacre, tied to said Klingon in Starfleet? And information that could have plunged the Federation's best ally into civil war if exposed? It's a brilliant gambit - you either force the Klingons into civil war OR you harm relations (possibly break them entirely) between the two powers by the attempted execution of Worf, with the only thing at risk exposing a dead former traitor and spy that wouldn't compromise your own intelligence network. Much like the gambit in the Defector, the worst possible outcome is nothing changing about the current status quo, with the best outcomes being MASSIVE gains for the Romulan Empire.

I like in this, how the two dimensional Klingons, (oh the honor bound warriors, Picard will save the day and they will abide by the codes they uphold), get more depth by the level of political intrigue, to save their asses. Such a great way to enrich them as a people and make them more interesting as well. I mean, the character of Worf did already give the Klingons more backstories and traditions, but this is just a huge step up in that regard.

One of my favorite TNG episodes. The contrast between idealism and political pragmatism was marked. The chief's obvious distaste for the lies but a life of political compromise had jaded him, with Worf's idealism awaking something for a bit. The outcast old woman ultimately having more honor than the council. A brilliant retelling of the "I will do whatever is right no matter the cost" type of story.

"Sins of the Father" is the beginning of Worf becoming my third-favorite TNG character after Picard and Data. In some ways, it's like the TNG version of "Amok Time."

Our first BANGER TRIFECTA! It's pretty rare in Trekdom to get three episodes this good in a row. Also: I'm surprised that no one has mentioned famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.

I know it's not officially canon, but there was an amazing video game in the 1990s called _Klingon Academy_ which included the story of a disastrous Klingon civil war a few years after the events of _Star Trek V._ K'mpec was a captain in the Imperial Navy back then, and saw firsthand the destruction and ruin the war brought, which to me informs his resolve here that another war must be prevented even at the cost of knowingly pinning a traitor's crimes onto someone else.

At this point in the franchise, there is no canon name for the Klingon homeworld, thus Picard ordering the ship's heading for "The First City of the Klingon Imperial Empire". In the novels and RPGs on the time, I recall names like Kling or Klinzhai being used but they were never used onscreen.

Oh boy guys, Worf has a brother! From a Data to a Worf Ep. Intrigue in the Klingon Council. Cool to see more of the Klingon home world. I knew you guys would like this one. That's it! 😉🖖

The actor that plays K’mpec played Korrd in Star Trek V.

Tony Todd played several different characters in Hercules and Xena, two shows you should also consider watching, especially if you like wrestling.

I used to catch the occasional episode on TV after school for both those series, I've always sort of wondered if I should go back and actually watch them properly. I did watch Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, featuring Hercules in space.

Nice that you like klingon episodes :-) I dont care much for them, I find klingons somewhat tiresome. Worf is ok though.

@@tomre2769 And I thought it was just me that felt like that ! The other Klingon ( well, half anyway ) who sounds relatable is K’ehleyr - ( Suzie Plakson ). She doesn’t waffle on about honour and ritual and isn’t dressed like a warrior out of the Genghis Khan fancy dress catalogue. Nor did she speak in an antiquated semi-Shakespeare style to convince us that Klingons exude gravitas and little else. When she told Worf, “Don’t give me that Klingon nonsense! “ I could have jumped for joy!

Klingons do indeed live for a very long time. It's not unusual for them to break 150 years old. They've got nothing on Vulcans, but they do live considerably longer than humans.

It’s rare for them to live that long though owing to their warrior culture, many would die in glorious battle. Those that maintain honour, and live to such ages are held in very high esteem, some earning the title Da’Har master. Cannot say anything further without spoilers :)

Same actor, different character. Charles Cooper (1926-2013) played General Korrd in "ST5: TFF" as well as K'mpec in "Sins of the Father". He looked too good as a Klingon not to use again.

The name of the Klingon homeworld goes unnamed on screen for years and years. Just as Vulcan was named for a Roman god, the Klingon planet is named Qo’noS (in Klingon) and transliterated into English as Kronos, the father of Zeus in Ancient Greek mythology.

I always had a problem with Geordie's comment about the food being suitable for Worf. Why would the writers have him throw Worf under the bus like that?

I guess to further solidify that Geordi is socially inept. Remember how he buzz killed Data's gift laugh from Q? That's a powerful weapon when you can override a Q act.

I kind of wonder if he meant it as like "disliking this food isn't a Klingon thing, it's a Kurn thing. See Worf likes it!" As Geordi seemed to have problems with Kurn. But anyway that that was his intent and it came out wrong.
