Here's a bit of trivia: Axel Foley was written for Sylvester Stallone while the part of Winston Zedmore from GHOSTBUSTERS was written for Eddie Murphy. Eddie had to turn GHOSTBUSTERS down because he was in the middle of filming BEVERLY HILLS COP.

Love the channel bro! The bit with Murphy laughing at the guys in the red and black leather suits is actually a bit of self parody. He wore a similar getup in his ‘Delirious’ special (I think it’s that one), which is one of his most famous standup performances ever and along with his being on SNL, helped rocket him to movie star status. So him laughing at those guys was a reference to that outfit and was just Eddie having a little fun at his own expense. I believe he has stated in multiple interviews over the years that the leather suit, the pressure of his biggest stand up performance yet, and hot theatre spotlights was not a combination that ended up being very fun for him. lol

You're so right about no one being able to replicate Eddie's comedy. He absolutely owned the 80's comedy films. In many ways, it's the same reason why Jim Carrey owned the 90's comedy films...they both had their own originality that separated them from the pack and that no one else could match. 6:58 - This exact rant popped into my head the other day for no discernable reason, including the part you cut, "If Michael calls, tell him what room I'm in." 🤣 13:02 - The key Axel Foley's character: act like you belong exactly where you are as bombastically as possible. Go ahead and go back to every one of his "undercover" moments and you'll see it. "Axel F," by Harold Faltermeyer, wasn't just played to death in the movie, but also on the radio.

I so love the dynamic between Axle, Mickey and Jenny as originally when Stallone was going to star in this, Jenny was supposed to be a love interest, then they changed the idea that these 3 characters grew up together in Detroit as kids. I can so pictures the little group of friends and its just so original and better than to have her be a love interest. Don't see it in films.

Eddie Murphy's 4th film and also his debut as film producer. The beginning of his reign as an comedy superstar on film. Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay and the No.1 film of 1984 (dethroning Ghostbusters). Movies about Cops prior to BHC were either dramas and or thrillers. Afterwards more comedies about cop characters came to be. Part 2 (directed by Tony Scott) is a major winner of an sequel. Part 3 (directed by John Landis) is the worse and you will be disappointed. Part 4 is in the works and will be on Netfilx. Lord knows we can use some Axel Foley back in the culture.

The first film was originally written as a action film with Stallone, when Murphy was cast it became a comedy with most of it improvised by Murphy. The first film had dramatic scene with comedic dialogue, the second film was written to be more comedic and has cameo by another up and coming comedian Chris Rock. The super cop speech at 15:25 was improvised by Murphy if you look closely you can see them trying not to laugh.

I am glad you enjoyed this movie, Taggart and Rosewood's jokes were a lot of improvisation. In one of the extras on the DVD they talked about how the script only had "-Taggart and Rosewood are waiting for Axel to return" and just from that, they went off like an old couple which yielded the comment about red meat. They are still very present in "Beverly Hills Cop II" which is as funny but with a bigger budget and more action really worth the watch as well. I scanned a few comments before replying and someone mentionned "Midnight Run" from the same director, It stars Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin and is definitely a movie you would enjoy as well.

Eddie Murphy probably had the most meteoric career rise in comedy history. He debuted on Saturday Night Live when he was 19 years old and at 20 was the show's breakout star. The next year he made his film debut in "48 Hours", the seventh highest-grossing film of 1982. He followed that with the 3rd highest-grossing film of 1983, "Trading Places". He turned 23 years old in 1984 and had the highest grossing film of the year. Its sequel was the third highest-grossing film of 1987, and "Coming to America" the third highest of 1988. Unfortunately, Murphy's career went into a decline at the end of the decade, and he had a string of poorly reviewed box office bombs in the first half of the 90s, culminating in 1995's "Beverly Hills Cop III", an abysmal movie and one of Murphy's worst performances.

You're exactly right; he wasn't mugging it up; he was just sliding his natural wit into a serious-crime drama; and his character was a seasoned, smart cop; and that's what I liked. Another thing that added to the quality of the movie was the seriously evil bad guys. By the way, how did you like the improvised scene between him and Serge. You don't know this because it was before your time, but Bronson Pinchot is a hilarious actor who does these funny accents. When I was younger, he played a happy-go-lucky immigrant from Europe who moved in with his American cousin. Of course, he was always getting into trouble, to the consternation of his American cousin. The show was called "Perfect Strangers." His character was Balki Bartokomous. Please do NOT skip the second one. It's excellent. Really enjoyed it. I could watch this once a month.

Midnight Run is one of my favourites. It builds slowly, but it's one of those beautiful, rare, beasts where every scene, every line of endlessly quoteable dialogue, serves to advance the story or to illustrate characters' points of view, even if at the time the moment feels like a bit of a non-sequitur. While De Niro and Grodin are clearly the stars of the piece, secondary characters (Like Ashton's Marvin) and all the way down to people who may only have a couple of lines, are allowed space to shine. It's taking way too long to write this comment, because I don't know how to not ramble extensively about how satisfying a watch it is to me. I guess on that note, on the first viewing, you may find Grodin's character annoying initially, and De Niro's to be exasperating in certain ways towards the third act but by the end of the film you understand them (not always a given in storytelling). I would also recommend it as a quality film to react to.

By the way, I live in Los Angeles and although Beverly Hills has not changed too dramatically since 1984, there are some changes. However, this shot here at 6:44 is NOT Beverly Hills. It's actually the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. And yes, it still looks like this today. His car is pulling up to what used to be the main entrance of the hotel. It got switched to the opposite side of the building during the 1984 Olympics. According to research, they made the switch because too many homeless people were visible from inside. I guess they wanted to avoid embarrassment. There's a park known as Pershing Square directly across from this Hotel (not on screen in the shot). Homeless people were starting to pile up a bit in the park. But if you visit this Hotel today, this side in the shot, is considered the back entrance. So, not all of the scenes in Los Angeles for this movie were actually filmed in Beverly Hills. This was a constant movie trick, especially in a lot of the older movies. This same hotel was also used in the movie "Ghostbusters" when the three main characters go in and capture the green ghost for the first time. The hotel was built in 1923 and was the largest west of Chicago at that time it was built. It's been used in music videos, movies, commercials and also, at one point, hosted the Academy Awards. Very historical location. And one of my favorite buildings in Los Angeles. I've only stayed there once...haha!

So, the theme tune is called Axel F and it's by Harold Faltermeyer, and it's named after the lead character which is Axel Foley. Not only that, but the song Axel F is also in F minor, for you music nerds out there. :)

And the guy who killed Micky in the beginning is the same actor who plays Mike in Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul

at 15:24 the guy that plays Taggart was laughing his ass off because that was all improvised by Eddie. What a fucking legend!

Axel's Detroit Police Chief Todd was the actual real life Detroit Police Chief at the time this movie was made. He is mentioned in the White Boy Rick documentary.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but another cop comedy you should check out, is Police Academy.

Please consider THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS (1997) starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas. Based on a true story about two killer lions

Judge Reinhold (Billy) is in one of my favorite comedies. Ruthless People is so underrated, friggen hilarious. Danny DeVito, "Who? Debbie?" That's not a spoiler and doesn't give anything away. If ya know then you know. Man, I need to watch that again.

The reason he was laughing at the jumpsuits passing by is because the director put that in there to throw him off. Because those were the ones he wore in his specials.
