Although the director purposely left the ending open -- "who knows what the tides will bring" -- but I think he went back up that farm house to see that girl.

Absolutely! At first, he expected to be rescued soon, so he didn't immediately open the packages he found. Eventually, he opens all except for one. He keeps that one as a symbol of his determination to eventually return home.

Emma, we've all experienced something like this haven't we? I know I have. How many times has your world been turned upside down and you had to start all over again? The loss of your channels sort of parallels that doesn't it? Many of us have lost the love of our lives, lost everything we had, and found ourselves completely lost and alone without anyone to take our hand and help us through it. I'm sure you've experienced that too. There's no guarantee of a better tomorrow, but we keep pushing forward, hoping things will get better. This film shows that. In this film, he lost Wilson and it was gutwrenchingly painful. We've all lost something that hurt just as much. That's why we can all relate to this film. Who knows? Tomorrow might be the day when everything changes for the better for us. I'm glad you saw this film and felt the pain like we all did. At the very least, it lets us know we're alive.

Chuck and Kelly weren’t married yet. The small gift he gave her in the car before he left was presumably an engagement ring, but they don’t actually show it. I think that’s why he feels like he can’t compete now, he wasn’t officially her husband 💔

Watching CASTAWAY made me think of my second cousin Carlos, who escaped Cuba on a raft made from a truck tire inner tube. Carlos had also spent 12 years as a political prisoner in one of Castro's Gulags. After he was released, he decided he would leave Cuba one way or another, in other words dead or alive. He almost managed the former. He was picked up by a freighter half dead from dehydration and severe sunburn. After spending a week in the hospital he immediately went to work and started the process of getting a Florida license to practice medicine. He got his license and became a family medicine practitioner for 27 years. He has since passed away and being most proud of his American citizenship.

The woman who appears at the end at the crossroads and talks to him is the same one who appears at the beginning, welding in a workshop on the ''Dick - Bettina'' ranch. Then we see that when the box reaches her husband outside, he was unfaithful. In that ending we see that the ranch is now just called ''Bettina''. When he is deciding where to go, he looks in the direction of the ranch, towards Bettina. You never know what the tide will bring, because there it is.

I don't know if it's ever explained, but my personal opinion as to why he couldn't bring himself to open that box was because those wings on the outside resembled angel's wings, and to him they represented kind of a guardian angel.

Good movie. I like the ending. Relatively believable except for the alive engine coming at him in the ocean and the blood in the water. Hank's second best movie. Philadelphia was his best. Hellen Hunt was outstanding. He also said "keep breathing" in Sleepless in Seattle.

This movie has so many hidden messages and symbols throughout it. Its very well made Lots of youtubers have made videos explaining the small details, its quite interesting The first one that people miss is that the film isnt called castaway, as in shipwrecked Its called cast away, with a space. As in to be rejected. Search 'cast away' explained. It will make you want to watch it again

I have dealt with pain such as broken bones, but to me a bad tooth is the worst. That rope up on the mountain was for himself. He was going to end himself. The worst was his coming home. It was the thought of her that kept him going, and now that is gone.

its a beautiful movie and the ending of her going back to her family is perfect they could of gone for the cliche of them getting back together but thats not real life. in marriage and to chidren u have duty. her and chuck we no longer kids any more, they had both been through so much, the love they had would always be shared between them but they had different lives to lead now. that like of "u have to keep breathing" is so important dor so many situations in life

@@Emma_Reactions I read this years ago..at the end of filming party they kept the box and opened it with a limited number (Hanks,.Director, FEDEX VIPs, etc) Only one person knew what was in the box, and in the org story/script it was 2 jars of homemade jam/jelly, and some lose items. So that's what the cast and crew expected. But the prop master changed out the jam/jelly and put in a "Sat Phone, small survivoir kit (water purification, energy bars, fishing line etc)" along with other items. It was a discussed if they wanted to reshoot the ending where it was disclosed. However Hanks, felt if they did, his character would need to be "written" off as he lost so much (time, the love of his life, etc) not opening the box, and if it was found he afterwards he had the resources to be rescued quickly. Fedex actually did a commercial years afterwards about this for the Superbowl.

It's a perfect ending, hopeful and realistic. I liked it more than Chuck and Kelly ending up together again... Not because I didn't like them together but that's not how life usually works. And maybe Chuck was "the love of her love" but I'm sure did love her husband as well.

This film stands or falls on the performance of Tom Hanks and he does deliver a great performance, the other Actors in the Film are mainly cameo type appearances, though Helen Hunt makes the most her role; It is certainly a bit disconcerting when a White Volley ball has a major part, albeit silent; But the Ball ( Wilson ) plays an integral part in helping too keep Chuck Nolan together, and is also heartrending when Wilson is lost sea; When Nolan gets back to the States he quietly buys a new Wilson; Emma captures the pain of pulling a tooth with a Ice Skate with an adroit reaction; Also after a number of packages are washed up, Nolan keeps one back as a driver/incentive to make it back home; Through all this is Emma giving her own Tour de Force of a reaction that keeps you enthralled in proceedings; I guess this is a modern take on the Robinson Crusoe story without a man Friday; Emma I don't ken how you do it, but yet again your sheer captivating beauty stands out, a sheer natural beauty which needs no help to shine. 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🎶🎵🎶🎧🎙🥰💘🤟👏👍💐💐🍁🦅🦅.

31:00 The "real rope" you see, around the neck-like part of that driftwood stump was rope Chuck made to hang himself. As he says in this scene, he tested it on the tree first, before using it on himself, but it broke the branch and he would have just fallen down the cliff.

The writer said what was contained in the box was almost everything he'd would need to live on the island and to escape it. The lady had sent her husband a GPS device, emergency phone, compact fishing pole along with fishing hooks and extra line, fishing knife and small fishing net with telescopic pole. Her husband asked her to send these items to him in Russia because he was an outdoors's guy. It turns out he had a Russian girlfriend which led to their divorce.

There have been a number of theories, even some parodies, speculating that the unopened box contained survival equipment; however, the original script includes a mention that the box contained salsa, sent by the woman to her errant husband to try and "spice up" their relationship. Robert Zebecks decided, wisely, that not revealing the contents and having the box with the wings represent Chuck's hope of someday getting back to civilization to deliver that one package was the reason he never opened it.

There are two movies where I related to characters I didn't really want to relate to: One was Brooks in "The Shawshank Redemption". I knew that's how I'd end. And it's getting there. The other was Melvin Udall in "As Good As It Gets". I'm not proud of the similarity. "well, you can just change". Helluva lot easier said than done. ps - wrt Brooks, I mean old and alone, not literally. One thing keeping me going is I hope someone will put on my tombstone: "I win".... I never quit; life just beat me.

One month late, but here comes nothing: The last box contained the divorce documents between Bettina and Dick. Tom Hanks gave the name Wilson to the ball because it's his wife's name, Rita Wilson. He sometimes calls her wife by that name, and it was easier for him to relate to the ball that way. The thing that everybody misses in this film is that Kelly was about to leave him initially. She had started a relationship with the dentist and was probably already pregnant with their daughter. She was fighting with the need to tell him. The clue to this revelation is the daughter's age - four years. Chuck gets that in the end. The title CAST AWAY has, therefore, more than one meaning.

In the end, it all seemed to be destiny, meant to happen. All Shook Up, Elvis. The truth is, they were NEVER married, he was going to propose when he got back from his last trip....and they are both still lost. Neither of them, really left that island. Which means now, u have to watch the TV series, Lost! It's about a plane full of passengers, that goes down on an island. But first, u have to review here, a true stories about plane wrecks and survival. Society of the snow, about the soccer team that crashed in the Andes mountains, and Snow Walker, stars the sniper guy from saving Private Ryan, Barry Pepper. A beautiful movie!
