Disney tackles Greek mythology in this animated feature. Hercules (Tate Donovan), a son of gods, was snatched as a baby by Hades (James Woods) and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god. Now a teenager, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. With his plucky satyr sidekick, Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), along for the ride, Hercules must learn how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures.

Alan Menken composed the songs and music for all the Disney Renaissance films except The Lion King and Mulan (Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Stephen Schwartz did most of the lyrics, iirc). I think he's a HUGE reason why these films were so successful. Moana and Frozen have fantastic music too, but there's just something about those Alan Menken songs. ❤❤

7:50 and that's one of the best things about this film! The mish-mash of Gospel music mixed in with Greek mythology is a stroke of genius 😁 10:05 this film has one of the most underrated Disney soundtracks (if not the film itself) ever, I feel like. The songs are so good. I still find myself listening to it every once in a while 😄 20:54 it was actually a Hydra, a mythical sea-serpent monster of Greek mythology. Think of what the captured killer of Dr. Erskine in Captain America: TFA & Dr. Zola in Captain America: TWS both said, "Cut off one head, two more shall take its place" that's where they got it from. 🐉🐉🐉😱😁 26:33 one of my favourite songs from the soundtrack 😄 Susan Egan's (Megara) voice is a dream 34:51 another banger 'A Star is Born' so many great songs 😁 35:44 you said it 🙂 the inclusion of Gospel music just elevated this film to another level. Very nice touch 36:45 James Wood as Hades is incredible, love his performance 😁

@35:31 Absolutely... It is the music of the classics (generally from the "Disney Renaissance" animated films) that makes them so magical. Nowadays, it's basically the same songs re-done in live action versions and the newly added songs seem just there to increase the run time; or in the new orignal stories: at most a single show stopper song with the rest of the songs unfortunately being average to mediocre.

Don't rely on this movie for information on Greek Mythology. It's FULL of inaccuracies. Here are just a few examples. 1. His real Greek name is "Heracles". 2. Heracles was not born a god. 3. Alcmene is Heracles' mother, not Hera. 4. Hades is not evil, nor has fire powers. 5. Heracles wasn't treated as an outcast when he was young. 6. Heracles ALWAYS knew Zeus was his father. 7. Heracles never encountered Pegasus. 8. Chiron was Heracles' trainer, not Philoctetes. 9. Nessus was the last monster Heracles killed, not the first. (Side Note: Nessus caused the death of Heracles after his Hydra-poisoned blood got on Heracles) 10. Heracles only became a god after his death.

I love the fact that they wanted this movie to be funny, following the gravitas of HUNCHBACK. The gospel inspired music was also a genius move. My local theater previewed ZERO TO HERO before the live action 101 DALMATIANS. It got such s big reaction, they ran it twice! And you're right about Michael Bolton singing this. He performs it over the end credits.

The Hydra fight scene is also completely wrong. Here's how. 1. Heracles fought the Hydra in a swamp, not a rocky gorge. 2. Heracles didn't face the Hydra alone. He had help from his nephew Iolaus. 3. The Hydra is not that big. It's only slightly larger than a human. 4. They Hydra doesn't start with just one head. It actually has 9 heads, and grows back 2 if one is severed. 5. Heracles didn't kill the Hydra by crushing it under a falling cliff. Heracles cut off each head and Iolaus used a torch to burn the stumps to prevent new ones from growing. When Heracles got to the last head, he ripped it off and buried it under a rock. Heracles then used the Hydra's blood to poison his arrows. Bonus Fact: When the Hydra burped, it should've killed everyone because the Hydra also has EXTREMELY toxic breath.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but I believe that the first Bibles were written in Greek... Gospel is an old English translation of εὐαγγέλιον... Which means something like "good news"... But yeah, I think they got inspiration from that Greek and Bible connection to make the Muses into Gospel singers... This is a super fun movie, but I will say that it is a horribly inaccurate version of the original story, in many ways... But, to be fair, a Disney version of Hercules is less likely to include details like how Zeus essentially tricked a human into having an affair with him, cheating on his wife, causing her to attempt to sabotage him... I think in some versions of the story Hera makes Hercules go temporarily crazy, causing him to kill his wife and children...There's lots of messed up stuff in Greek Mythology.... So yeah, great, fun movie, but don't expect it to match the original story/stories very much lol.

To KSO, Thank you for this upload. It is always a joy to view classics, and, with the added benefit of another person’s fresh perspective, anew. Can't wait to see you cover similar titles and works from the '90s. If I may, I would like to ask if you would consider watching the two-parter miniseries _Merlin_ from 1998, starring Sam Neill? Being not only a little-known gem from the late ‘90s, but also a unique take on Arthurian legend for its time, it is something of a stylistic forerunner to the _Harry Potter_ and _The Lord of the Rings_ films released just three years later in 2001. And like the abovementioned titles, _Merlin_ (1998) also has a great cast of international actors, many of whom I am certain you will recognise from previous titles that you have already covered on your channel. Should you wish to broach the miniseries, I have added a YT link to the two episodes below: _Merlin_ (1998), Part One - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXa4p3aPm6-cgNE _Merlin_ (1998), Part Two - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHKyhWuqnJd2b7M Best regards

3:25 - Disney is well known for playing fast and loose with the source material, but they take so many liberties with the story of Hercules that I have a hard time watching it. For starters, Hercules was NOT born a god. He, like most Grecko-Roman heroes, was a Demigod: half god, half human. Also, Pegasus was not created for Hercules by Zeus. He was born from the blood of the slain gorgon Medusa and was the mount of Bellerophon when he slew the Chimera. Pegasus wasn't connected to Hercules at all. 4:42 - A gripe I have with many depictions of Greek Mythology is that Hades was not 'evil.' He wasn't the best guy, but he wasn't inherently 'evil.' This perception is a bleed-over from Christian belief which associated the 'underworld' with 'Hell' and the ruler of Hell as The Devil. The keepers of the dead of MANY cultures have been the victims of such demonization. 5:19 - Here's another biggie: they've confused the Fates, who weave the thread of a person's life, with the Graeae, the three seer sisters that told Perseus how to defeat Medusa. 6:03 - 'Tempting fate,' as it were. 6:44 - It's funny seeing Hera so worried about Herc, given that in the original a) she's not his mother, and b) she's his primary antagonist. 10:05 - When Disney releases a musical, they typically record two versions of the movie's main song. The first is the version used in the movie and the second is sung by a famous recording artist for radio play. The radio version of Go The Distance was indeed sung by Michael Bolton. 12:20 - The actual Philoctetes was not a satyr, he was human. His role here is a bit of a role reversal since he was actually Hercules' friend at the end of his life. 'Phil' was most known as a participant in the Trojan War. 14:47 - Megara. Easily the best part of this movie. One of the best heroines Disney ever conceived. It's a shame knowing what happens to her in the myths. 19:48- One little problem...that's the hydra. 20:26 - Not entirely inaccurate. In the original myth, Herc's cousin, Iolas, backed Herc up by cauterizing the severed necks with a torch, preventing them from regrowing, but the last head was invulnerable, so Hercules buried it under a boulder so the hydra could never move again. 24:37 - He makes a very handsome throw-rug, doesn't he? Best Disney cameo ever. (Scar is standing in the the Nemean Lion, a beast Herc slew as one of his Ten Trials. You see several of the trials during the Zero to Hero montage (and one or two others are mentioned in passing).) 36:45 - Hades is one of Disney's best villains because he is one of those characters that was completely rewritten for it's voice actor. Hades is voiced by comedy acting legend James Woods. His take on the character was completely different from what the writers had envisioned, but they immediately recognized that what he did was better.

Not many people are fond of this movie because it's not faithful to the original myth, and I say, "so?" Disney alters stories all the time and can still make great stories. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is very different from the book and that doesn't stop the movie from being so good and beloved. Bur seriously, we must stop and appreciate a character like Meg. Finally a strong female lead that doesn't fall in love at first sight and already went through a bad relationship, which was a huge plus. And of course, the ever hilarious Hades. But just because he's funny doesn't make him any less threatening. I feel kinda bad for him when he was one of the few decent gods in the original mythos and is always made evil in most media just because of his awful job. Still a great movie by Disney 😊
