The only other major "real" villains before this were Lady Tremaine and Gaston... and they hold no candle to Frollo. Both of them have their respective villainies exaggerated to cartoonist proportions, but not Frollo. There is nothing zany, goofy, madcap or over the top about him. He's just an evil human being who progressively gets worse and worse the more you see of him and has no redeeming features in the slightest. Tremaine had her daughters, Gaston had his humor and sidekick, Frollo has nothing but sheer cruelty

Fun fact: In mythology Gargoyles are actually protective beings carved on buildings, like churches, whose appearance is so frightening that they scare away evil. I always liked it that it was a Gargoyle that in the end ‘repelled’ the evil entity.

One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was the world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, we were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night. We are Gargoyles!

"Why am I getting so emotional so early?" Because that's what the music does! This is by far my favorite animated Disney film. The songs are amazing, the score beautiful, the visuals stunning, the story/message fantastic. Yes they changed some things from the novel, but they kept a significant amount of the darkness and it's just so brilliant.

A couple notes for Hellfire and Frollo as a person: -Frolli sings “of my virtue i am justly proud”. This contradicts the religious man he perceives himself to be as pride is quite literally one of the greatest sins. There isn’t a way to be “justly proud” because pride is the first of the seven deadly sins -Frollo IS given a chance to repent from his Hellfire. When the guard enters the hall and informs him that Esmeralda had escaped, the hall and room is bathed is a powder blue light. The fireplace doesn’t reflect, it is as if all remnants of sin had been momentarily cleansed. THIS was Frollo’s opportunity to repent, to forget about his vendetta against the gypsies and let Esmeralda go. But, he doesn’t, he chooses to continue with his pursuit of her. The moment he makes that decision, the room is blanketed by red, signifying Frollo’s choice to sin as oppose to repent. -Frollo begins to spiral following Hellfire. -Frollo has committed each of the seven sins Pride: he chooses to follow and lead by his own rules, even if it went against God. He is too proud to admit he is wrong or that his way is wrong Greed: he is power hungry, he wants to annihilate a whole group of people and was willing to burn and conquer Paris to get it. Envy: one could argue he envies Quasimodo because Quasi is the kind of man he wishes to be perceived as. He is also envious of Phoebus because of his ability to garner respect and authority without having to use alternative means. Wrath: Frollo is shown from the very beginning to have a temper, it only gets worse after Hellfire (when he begins to spiral) Lust: he wants Esmeralda, whether to have her intimately or be a pawn for his religious agenda. Tho, it is heavily implied to be the fact he wants to bed her. Gluttony: in tandem with Greed, Frollo is power hungry. He gets enough power to have an army at his beck and call. However, he consumes too much power, which ultimately leads to his blinded sense of insanity and his downfall. Sloth: not a huge one, but when Frollo cares little for something, THIS is when sloth shows. Quasi is in his 20s and he’s only learning the alphabet? Teaching Quasi obviously wasn’t something he wanted, so he put it on the back burner. -Frollo is a representation of the corruption in not just politics, but also in religion. Frollo, a man who preaches about justice, is a snake on a power trip. He has authority and uses it, hence his political corruption. He then uses God and virtue to justify his actions, which is where corruption of the church comes into play. Frollo is probably the most terrifying of the Disney villains because he’s so REALISTIC! He could very well be a governor or a priest somewhere in the world! Most of all, he’s a human. A truly evil human, and THATS blood curdling to even comprehend.

Also the ending "What makes a monster and what makes a man?" In the end it is not how we look, how rich, powerful or influential we are or even how we are brought up... it is what we do with the talents and choices we have that makes us who we are. Like Frollo, we can have all the influence, power in your part of the world and use it all to make only yourself the better for it at the cost of doing the right thing and taking care of the people you serve or you can be like Esmeralda, Phoebus and Quasimodo and do what's right no matter the personal cost or what others may think of you. Paul Kandel (sp?) the voice of the narrator (Clopin: puppeteer, King of the Gypsies) is an amazing singer. I can't believe he could hit and hold those high notes for that long. Anyone else wonder why Quasimodo looks so different to the other gypsies? I mean his mother was one and I'm assuming his father was the male gypsy she seemed close to... yet Quasimodo is white with red hair as opposed to dark skin and hair

One of the darkest Disney movies, but one of the most realistic. They’re dealing with things like lust and damnation and genocide. And yes, the music is phenomenal. I think this is usually missed by a lot of people because it is very heavy for a young audience. Even for an animated film it’s very heavy. But I think that’s what gives it character and that’s what gives it death that a lot of Disney movies can’t reach.

You have a high moral sense of justice. It’s likely for this reason it hit you so hard from the beginning. I’m the same way. It’s a deep feeling of empathy and compassion towards those experiencing such extreme injustice like what’s being shown. Add that with the religious tone of the music, it creates an intense atmosphere. Esmeralda has become one of my favorite female characters! Aside from being beautiful, she’s kind and also has a strong sense of justice because she’s has experienced and witnessed so much injustice. I admire her for that. Also I hope someone recommends Atlantis, Treasure Planet and Tarzan soon. The first two are extremely underrated! And I think you’ll like the soundtrack to Tarzan 💜

The soundtrack is phenomenal! One of the best openings ever if you ask me. And then there's Frollo. One of the darkest and best Disney villains... precisely because of how eeriely real he feels. No magic powers, no supernatural being. Just a human being with a high postion, abusing it in the cruelest way possible 😮

13:10 - Hunchback is often seen as the beginning of the decline (though not the end) of the Disney Renaissance. It's an underrated film, but it's music is some of the most beautiful Disney has ever produced. Unfortunately, Disney's success has been a lot more spotty lately. 13:24 - Clopin (Klo-paa (with just the tiniest hint of an 'n' on the end)). 13:54 - "Whatever their pitch, they're sure to bewitch you..." 14:35 - Although they are both officially part of the song 'Out There,' the part that includes Frollo actually IS unofficially referred to as 'Stay In Here.' 16:09 - The _Palais de Justice_ has been the high court of France since the 13th century. It's much prettier than the building we see here. 19:27 - A lot of the imagery in the upcoming scene is a reference to the famous silent film version of Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWicY6mIm9B-q5I 33:45 - Remember back to their first scene together. Frollo mentioned when Quasi's "heartless mother abandoned' him. Frollo's probably been painting Quasi's mother as the villain his whole life. 37:38 - 'Sanctuary' isn't a gypsy thing. It's a province of the Catholic church. Any person who is fleeing some danger or injustice who enters a church can claim 'sanctuary' and get the church's protection. Violating a claim of Sanctuary is basically an attack against God. Quasimodo standing atop Notre Dame and screaming 'SANCTUARY' is the single most iconic image associated with this story since long before Disney adapted it. 38:27 - I think you may have missed the joke here. 'Mon-sewer' is a misspelling of 'monsieur,' the French word for 'mister.' It's a language joke. 40:24 - Best Disney Villain Death ever. (Dr. Fascilier is a close second.) 42:27 - Both movies included Stephen Schwartz as the song composer (along with Alan Menken in the case of Hunchback), so it's only reasonable that you would recognize similar music themes in both. 44:40 - Let's be clear: Frollo didn't 'like' Esmeralda, he lusted after her, and he was so lost in his own self-righteousness that he failed to recognize it for what it was and let it lead him further into corruption. 47:13 - Hellfire. He was in his own bedroom.

Alan Menken views this movies soundtrack as his lifes greatest work. This movie has a bunch of juxtaposition throughout. Examples of the songs doing this are: In here/ Out there, Heavens Light/ Hellfire. This movie is a masterclass in putting two groups of people, and their ideals against each other. In doing this, the question is answered. “Who is the monster, and who is the man?” Frollo feels conflicted that he is attracted to Esmeralda. Bc she’s a Romani and in his eyes, hedonistic. He ultimately gives into his lust and dedicates his self to a witch hunt for her and her people. Frollo is terrifying as a villain. He doesn’t look like a monster, he doesn’t have horns or tentacles. He’s not even a witch. This story diverges from normal fairy tail stories in this regard. Teaching us that the real monsters of this world look like you and I. They could be your neighbor, your teacher, your priest, a judge, literally anyone. Teaching the audience that the conventional way fairy tale stories judge characters by the way they look is wrong. “It is not our abilities that decide who we are, but our choices.” This quote from Harry Potter fits quite perfectly in the narrative. Frollo ends up being plunged into a fiery pit by a gargoyle. Gargoyles were thought to protect cathedrals from the wicked. So a Gargoyle taking out Frollo turns Notre Dame into a real character of the story. Not just some building. Which echoes the sentiment of all Parisians. A bunch of people hate this movie because Frollo is “too evil.” Many people claim to have left the theater because the story made them feel uncomfortable. I argue that is the exact point of the plot. If someone watched this movie, and were not disgusted in Frollo’s actions in any way, I’d tell that person to get some serious therapy.

Alan Menken did write an incredible score for this film , The incredible lyrics however, must be given credit. They were penned by the incredible Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, ) Also, Frollo in the original novel and in the Disney stage version of this show is the Archdeacon of Paris and a priest not a judge which makes him even more sinister. Also in the novel and stage version Frollo, Esmeralda, and Quasimodo all perish. Disney had to significantly alter the plot and characters to make it even remotely palatable for a "family" movie. Thankfully when they rewrote it for the stage they stayed true to the novel. I was fortunate enough to play Frollo in the stage version of the show. It is SO very much darker than the animated feature. Thank your for a wonderful reaction and I am glad that you enjoyed! Also, Quasimodo sings a song in the stage version called Made of Stone that is incredible. "We're made of stone. We thought that you were made of something stronger.". If you get the chance and want to watch the stage version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n16ypWyoq5uceqM

29:10: "This song reminds me of 'The Prince of Egypt', do you remember?" That's probably because the songs for "The Prince of Egypt" were written by Stephen Schwartz, who collaborated with Alan Menken on the songs for this film. And yes, "Hunchback" came first. If I have my chronology correct, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" would have been knee-deep in production when Jeffery Katzenberg (Then head of Disney's Animation Department) left the studio under less then pleasant circumstances. The story goes that Katzenberg's relationship with (Walt Disney Pictures Studio head) Michael Eisner grew contentious because he felt like his contributions weren't being properly recognized. He left the studio to form Dreamworks, SKG with David Geffen and Stephen Speilberg, and ended up rushing the film "Antz" into production so that the film could be released before "A Bug's Life", which Disney had made in partnership with Pixar. He then hired Stephen Schwartz to write songs for the "Dreamworks" film "The Prince of Egypt" a project Schwartz agreed to while working on the Disney film "Mulan". Many of the animators at Disney (and Pixar) saw the production of "Antz" as an intentionally underhanded rip-off of "A Bug's Life" and were less then enthused, so when they found out Schwartz had said yes to "Egypt", they fired him from the movie. It was roughly six years before Schwartz was invited back to work on "Enchanted".

This movie came out when I was five. Both it and Pocahontas have faced [valid] scrutiny for misrepresentation of cultures. Pocahontas also for its complete fabrication of the life of a historical figure who didn't even go by that name. I get it. I do. However, despite this, I actually think these are two of Disney's greatest masterpieces. Both shaped my character as a person---how I treat the natural world, how I think about and treat the people around me. I remember being very little and feeling respected that adults cared enough to make movies that taught me about less pleasant aspects of life without sounding patronizing or throwing tons of glitter where it isn't. Kids can handle more than we think, can understand more than we think. I will always have a special place in my heart for those two films, even if they didn't get everything right.

I agree with everything here... so, so much! I mean, a movie doesn't have to be historically accurate to be enjoyable. It's not a documentary! I mean, look at Anastasia. So beloved and fun, and as inaccurate as it can get, but it's still a good movie. Same with Pocahontas. That movie gets a lot of unfair hate! It might not be the best movie of the 90s, but definitely not as bad as some people painted it. This is a movie that shows a young woman preventing a war. Teaching others to be acceptable and tolerant of other cultures, and that peace is possible. And on top of that taught someone the value of nature. Colors of the Wind deserved all the awards it got. Seriously, how can a movie with that many positive messages can be considered bad? Because it's not historically accurate? Lame excuse! 🤨

This is my first time visiting your channel and I think you're one of the best reactors on KZbin. You took notes, you observed even the smallest details, you paused the video to fully analyze and comprehend what you saw, and you allowed yourself to get fully immersed in the story and let your emotions flow out naturally. There are too many reactors on KZbin that talk during important dialogue in the film, then later ask what just happened. It's frustrating to watch. But you did fantastic. I'll have to check out more of your videos.

This is a film that I enjoyed as a child and then found a new appreciation for as an adult, especially after 5 semesters of Latin in college. It is by far Disney's darkest film, with one of (if not) the darkest villains. Unlike Disney's previous villains, who were evil for the fun or sake of evil, Frollo is a man who truly believes that he is good, that his actions, no matter how wicked or unjustifiable, serve his idea of God's will. Through his conflict with the Archdeacon of Notre Dame, you see the difference between those who claim to be Men of God and actual Men of the Cloth. The music is also some of Disney's finest. Quasimodo-Patron Saint of the Friend Zone

The music in this movie is so incredible! The music at the beginning will always be one of the best (if not the best) intro’s from a Disney movie I have ever seen! Another great Disney movie where the music is incredible is Tarzan, Phill Collins did the music for that one and I can guarantee it’s gonna make you cry, the music is very powerful and with lots of emotion

This film is so underrated for real. That epic, soaring chorus at the end of the into is just soooooo good. Among the top film intro scenes ever imo. And the artwork in this film is just stunning. I wish the Hollywood animation industry would do more serious stories like this and Prince of Egypt again! There are some stories that can't have their grandeur properly portrayed by the limitations of live action. Anyways! I'm glad you got to watch this and you enjoyed it so much!

I adored Quasimodo when I was a kid and I still do, he is such a kind, gentle and caring soul. He is my top favorite character alongside Belle from The Beauty and the Beast and MIrabel and Bruno Madrigal from Encanto.

In the stage adaptation, during the climax, Esmeralda actually does die from smoke inhalation, BUT not before thanking Quasimodo for being a good friend. Also I think Frollo would get along really well with Mother Gothel from "Tangled" because of their similar views on raising children.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of those movies that you at least have to see in your life good animation good Story telling voice actors, and above all Music, the soundtrack is fantastic Alan menken did souch great job composing the songs for this movie Just as he did in most of the other Disney renaissance films. and Frollo is one of the darkest Disney" villains ever Because He does not have magical powers like a great wizard or a witch or he simply seeks power like most villains do . , he is just a simple man that uses his authority as a judge to do evil and harm others. and the worst thing is that he thinks that his actions are good and he is fulfilling the Lord commandments, And people like that exist in real life that's why he is one of the most Darkest villains ever because you realize How evil and insane can one simple person be... (Tony Jay) RIP did great as Frollo he gave soul to the character and that voice of hes' is simply majestic Hellfire If it not one of the best villain song One of my favorites along with be prepared from Scar in the Lion King and poor unfortunate souls in the Little mermaid among others is so great that you reacted to this movie Looking forward to more movie reactions ...👋 :)

One of my favorite Disney musicals, the Heavens Light especially tugs on my heart strings because at one point I believed that was unworthy of having any kind of love because I too was verbally abused and on few occasions physically but what kept me from ending my own life was the angel in the back of my mind she always reminded that everybody had their hardships in life but some just couldn't find the strength and ended their life, she didn't want me to be another because she saw good in me and then I remembered something my mother said that my great grandfather once said to her " Sometimes you gotta go through Hell to get to Heaven ", so I continued to suffer for another ten years between two people my mother dated until finally I got a new lease on life and just last year I found my real life guardian angel who is just like the angel within me both are women, both are amazing, and both love me very much. I couldn't be more thankful for being here today if it wasn't for my guardian angels

The Disney sequels definitely aren’t bad by any means. But for me it’s just that the first ones like Aladdin, hunchback, and beauty and the beast are just so good to the point they don’t need sequels. It’s the same feeling I had when I watched toy story 4, sure I enjoyed it, but toy story 3 and it’s ending was so good that toy story 4 felt unnecessary.
