Fact: this particular episode has a 9.9/10 rating on imdb out of 100k ratings. Perfect proof that good TV is appreciated regardless of how much you hate the outcome of the story. The fan in me gave it a 1 star rating when first seeing it, but then once the heat of the moment passed, I understood and changed it to a 10.

This episode is important because it establishes that actions have consequences, even for the "good" guys. Robb broke his oath to marry Frey's daughter, which from Frey's perspective is a huge betrayal, considering his daughter would have been Queen in the North. A marriage pact to Catelyn's brother is not at all equivalent to the original deal, and was probably seen as a huge insult to Frey. The extent of Frey's revenge is brutal, but it makes sense for the story. It's also morbid irony, as the Starks, who hold honor and loyalty above all else, are brought down by their own dishonorable actions, in a horribly dishonorable event.

This is such nonsense and yet always brought up to defend consequences. It matters nothing that Robb gave his word for a marriage, the marriage was in exchange for getting free passage. There still was a marriage, the Starks kept their word and Robb dared to think of his own personal freedom. All this carnage for a slight. It's not, all this shows is how cruel and bestial Walder Frey is, and how much gold can buy. The Boltons' leader and the Freys' leader are very simply scum. It amuses me when people ramble on about broken promises of Starks or whatnot, in the end it it's always the evil satisfaction of putting good and righteous people under your boot.

Robb and Jon’s story in this episode act as mirror images of each other. Both had to choose between duty/honor and love. Robb chose love over his oath to the Freys, and this is where it ended up. As painful as Jon leaving Ygritte to return to the watch was, he chose his honor and his Nights Watch vows over his love. It also mirrors Ned’s choice between keeping his honor or proclaiming Joffrey as legitimate to protect Sansa in S1E9. When Starks choose love over honor, this is what happens

@@lordstarwars2214 Good point. Although the last time we saw him Ned died not for honor but cause he wanted to protect his kids. I noticed that on the show so far it happens often where characters fall when they go away from what defines them. Ned put his honor aside for one time and got killed. The arrogant Jaime decided to be honorable and lost his hand because of it. Theon chose to be a "man"(of course in a misguided way) and got betrayed and captured and tortured.

I understand why Spartan would be disgusted and pissed off, but as you cool off I hope you can appreciate the brilliance of this episode. The red wedding in the show is a pretty faithful adaptation of how it goes down in the book and it's probably the most shocking turn of events in the entire GoT. It's a wonderful depiction of how each bad decision a person in power makes can have catastrophic results. Robb kind of brought that fate upon himself by marrying Talisa (Jeyne in the books) and disrespecting the Freys. They were very naive to think Walder Frey was just going to let that go. Of course nobody could've predicted the betrayal of the Boltons, but that's also a part of a bigger storyline. As tragic and shocking as it was, it was kind of necessary to push some other storylines forward. Think about it - from now on, especially for Sansa and Arya, it's not about being returned to their mother/brother anymore. They have to find their own paths now. Also, you have to give it to GRRM - killing off POV characters is a very bold move. But he makes it work every time.

That wasn’t a cuff link that you saw on Roose Bolton’s arm. It was chain mail. No one wears chain mail to a wedding unless they're a guard, so when Catlyn heard the Lannister song and then saw the chain mail, she put 2 and 2 together.

Well done to you both. The Red Wedding wasn't just done for TV drama, this happened in the show because... that's what happens in the books. However take solace, you are no longer 'Sweet Summer Children', you are 'Winter Warriors' and fully immersed in the Great Game and the Great Game is terrifying. You were warned about this show (as best as could be without spoiling) and also told by many that it will be a roller-coaster, which means there are ups aswell as downs. Well, to be fair, while Red Wedding does happen in the book, there is a small detail I think is worth mentioning . Pregnant Talisa(Maegyr) Stark does not get repeatedly stabbed in her stomach simply because there is no Talisa in the books. Robb's wife from the books, Jeyne Westerling is not even present at the Twins when it happens, so it is the truth that show even left some of the book readers in disbelief a little bit. I knew the Red Wedding would happen eventually, but when I figured out that in the show Robb's pregnant wife will be involved, I was like "for the fuck's sake, I thought this particular scene can't get any more savage." xD

Robb stark was really awesome character and cool honest dude. But to be honest the red wedding wasn't out of nowhere and could have been avoided if Robb didn't do such dumb decisions, they are few but sadly the biggest impact of decisions was where he chose poorly. This are his biggest mistakes. 1. He didn't marry with the freys which he promised, and he knows the Freys don't have good reputation. Result, well red wedding. 2. Letting his mom Catelyn around camp when he knows how desperate she has become to save the children no matter what. Result Jaime is set free. 3. Executing the Karstark and losing one of their strongest houses with soldiers and numbers. 4. Not a big decision but could have helped in the war alot. When Edmure Tully and Robb argues and Robb is angry because Edmure attacked the mountain before he should have. Well Robb had a brilliant strategy but not telling your commanders and captains your overhaul plan and how you wan't it done is just big dumb move by Robb. If he just told Edmure that he should stay garrison and not attack the mountain because he wanted them to draw out in the west to have better ground, then Edmure would have followed that. But ofcourse Edmure doesn't follow the plan, because he was never told of the plan in the first place.

This was an absolute masterclass in acting by Michelle Fairley. Honestly one of the best performances I've ever seen on screen, both movie and TV, not exaggerating. I had already read the 3rd book years before the season 3 came out but the way she acted in this episode had even bigger impact for me than reading this chapter for the first time. They absolutely nailed it with the casting in this show. P.S. Rains of Castamere (name of the episode and the song that was playing) is Tywin Lannister's boss theme, that's why Caitlyn got anxious after hearing it. The song is written about how Tywin literally annihilated the entire noble house pretty much because they were gossiping about his father. The lyrics of this song tells that story.

Every time Pudgey said she likes Talisa and Robb I died a bit inside. That said, funnily enough, Talisa is a change from the books. In the books Robb marries a girl called Jane Westerling, not out of love, but because he deflowered her when she was taking care of him. He did it for honour. Jane Westerling is also still alive in the books, because the Westerlings are Lannister vassals.
@fordhouse8b

And also, the same witch seen making the prophecy in the teenage Cersei flashback, is also Jayne Westerling’s grandmother. @Dadordemiel
@Dadordemiel Жыл бұрын
I would add that, Robb married Jeyne Westerling out of his mother's sight and by the time Catelyn knows about it, it's too late. In the series, Catelyn has the chance to tell Robb, he was breaking his oath. In the books and in the series as well, Catelyn can't stand Robb's wife before knowing her, she sees that dishonor in her, the same reminder as Jon was Ned's dishonor to her. Jeyne is alive and kept imprisoned or captive to see if she's actually pregnant of Robb's heir. And talking about heirs, there's a theory that says that, because Robb thought Bran and Rickon were dead, Sansa was married to Tyrion and Arya simply vanished, Robb, secretly, behind his mother's back, had named Jon his heir before a son of his was born.

The thing is, Robb DID have like all his best knights and commanders with him, but they were all unarmed. Westeros has this sacred tradition called 'guest right' where once you've invited someone into your hall and given them food, you can never raise a hand against them and they can never raise a hand against you. That's why Robb, Catelyn, and the others made sure to eat that bread once they entered the castle. This is SUCH a sacred tradition that no one expected Walder Frey to sink so low as to break it.

For sure I'm in the minority here, but when I first watched this episode I wasn't sad or crying, I was actually very impressed, because finally I got a show where "the main/good guys" aren't always winning, characters pay for their mistakes, and things are generally quite realistic. To me, it absolutely made sense why the Red Wedding happened, and as a history geek, it felt like something straight out of the history book. It made me value the show so much more and hyped me to watch more, because knowing anyone could die, I couldn't predict what is going to happen to the characters.

I'm with you. When I first watched this ep years ago, I only really felt bad for the Wolf, Cat and Arya. Robb just threw it all away for a pretty face (like the Frey said) and failed to honour his arrangement with them. Frey's daughter to marry a Tully is not even remotely the same as marrying the King in the North. I remember thinking to me that was gonna haunt Robb rather sooner than later, specially when that Kastark guy he killed said he lost the war the moment he married her. Like you said, it made sense that the red wedding happened. Robb didn't honour his most important arrangement. Frey let him pass the Twins and they won their 1st battle because of it, otherwise they were doomed to lose. Also they captured Jamie thanks to that. And even though Cat later released him, the Boltons caught him. But the Boltons only changed sides when they saw the North was beggining to fall apart after the Kastark execution. If the North stayed united, the Boltons would never change sides. Plus, that pretty face Talisa knew Robb had an arrangement from the beggining, that he was promised for the Frey daughter and why. Latr, she even said when telling her brother's story that she would never be a nobel lady because of that incident. But when she was faced with marrying the king in the north, she didn't even flinch. Basically Robb and Cat died because of a pretty face, and to be honest, the Frey daughter that would be Robb's new wife was way prettier than Talisa.

So let me explain this brilliant episode: 1. The reason Catelyn was so on edge was because the song they were playing was “The Rains of Castamere”, which you guys had mentioned at the beginning of the episode. It had to do with the battle that the house had lost to the Lannister, and so when Catelyn heard it, she knew something was wrong. 2. The reason why Robb wasn’t fully surrounded by men is because most were dining outside and were drunk from the festivities. There is this old tradition in Westeros that says when someone breaks bread in your home (dines) they are now under your protection, and so Robb and his bannermen didn’t have a reason to suspect that Walder Frey would ever do something so atrocious. 3. In the books, Greywind (Robb’s direwolf) was massively mistrustful of the Freys because he could sense something was about to happen and the Freys asked Robb to cage him. Because Robb had already disrespected the Freys he decided to just do what he was told because he didn’t want to be seen as further disrespectful. 4. If you remember when Karstark was about to die, he looked to Robb and told him “You lost the war the day you decided to marry that girl”. This is the most telling line that led up to this episode in my opinion. 5. Roose Bolton, (the one who Catelyn slapped because she realized he was in battle gear), is a Stark bannerman. So the fact that he was a part of this betrayal, not only to Rob but his fellow countrymen, is massive! But… Robb did break his oath first which goes back to what Spartan had mentioned a few episodes back about setting a good example Lastly, Spartan in the House Stark shirt was just too good 😂

A lot of things led to this happening. Catelyn letting Jamie go. That led to distrust with the Karstarks, a big portion of Rob's army. Which led to the Karstarks killing those Lannister hostages , which Rob responded to by beheading the head of the family effectively losing more than half his forces. Which then forced him to go back to walder Frey despite having broken his oath. So, it might seem like it came from nowhere but there was a lot that led up to it

In the show you first hear the full song when Bronn and the Lannister soldiers are singing it right before Blackwater. At the end of Blackwater you hear the marching tune of that song as Tywin makes his legendary entrance in the throne room. Then a whole season later Cersei tells Margaery about the story of House Reyne. The foreshadowing is there in bits and pieces. But everytime so much else is going on it is designed to make those little bits of info feel trivial. Everyone always focus on Joffrey doing something terrible at the Sansa Tyrion wedding, but that one ends up being a red herring. This is the one. "And now the rains weep o'er his hall, with not a soul to hear". System of a Down's Serj Tankian has a live orchestral performance of Rains of Castamere that you can find on youtube. It's so good. It's one of my favorite piece of music from GoT verse.

As to why Rob may seem so “unguarded”. The books do a better job of introducing the covenant of “guest right” where once your guest has been offered bread and salt they are guaranteed safety. The Freys offered bread and salt to the Starks so it is also seen as a promise under the gods that no harm will come to them. I’ve been awaiting this episode, and it has been great to watch the show again with you both! I look forward to your reactions for the next seasons!

@SilentStalker303
@SilentStalker303 Жыл бұрын
@@jwc7215 In the books there's quite a bit of foreshadowing for the Red Wedding (subtle of course, and something you'll probably only realise on a re-read), but the most prominent one comes from a Dany chapter, where she has a vision of it during her time in the House of the Undying, “Further on she came upon a feast of corpses. Savagely slaughtered, the feasters lay strewn across overturned chairs and hacked trestle tables, asprawl in pools of congealing blood. Some had lost limbs, even heads. Severed hands clutched bloody cups, wooden spoons, roast fowl, heels of bread. In a throne above them sat a dead man with the head of a wolf. He wore an iron crown and held a leg of lamb in one hand as a king might hold a sceptre, and his eyes followed Dany with mute appeal.” The only line that we get that might paint Walder Frey with some suspicion is in Catelyn's chapter before the Red Wedding, where Walder Frey says, “We’ll have music, such sweet music, and wine, heh, the red will run, and we’ll put some wrongs aright.”

the reason Robb didn't have more soldiers with him is that he thought they were safe under "guest right" under this custom, once someone has eaten food from the host, guest right is invoked and neither the guest nor the host can harm each other it's an extremely strong custom in the north and the idea that anybody would break it is unthinkable

Rains of Castamere is an unofficial lannister anthem. If you remember the story Cersei told Margaery, about House Reyne and how they got slaughtered because they rebelled against Tywin, that's what the song is about and it explains why Catelyn gets worried when she hears it being played. It was sort of dark foreshadowing about what was going to happen to Robb's party.

In the books iirc it's explained that the music players were very bad, and music sounded not too good. The song "Rains of Castamere" was the signal to begin the massacre.

One of the things glossed over in this episode is the fact that the Starks are eating bread and salt when they arrive at The Twins. This is a significant custom in Westeros, as it signifies guest rights. Guest rights mean that they’re under the lord’s protection. Lord Walder…egregiously violated guest rights. As far as Robb, Catelyn, etc. were concerned, they were safe in Walder Frey’s castle. What Catelyn responded to with Roose Bolton was that he was wearing chain mail under his dress clothes. She was already on edge when the band started playing The Rains of Castamere (a song about Tywin putting House Reyne of Castamere to death when they rebelled).

Awesome reactions I love you both. About Robb not being more on guard: there's actually significance to the scene where Walder Frey shares salt and bread and mead under his roof and in turn extending hospitality. That's essentially an ancient custom that dictates that guests under your roof should never be harmed and Walder Frey broke it like it was nothing. It's easy for us to think that Robb should have been more on guard but in truth the "Guest Right" as it's called is an absolute fact of life to them, breaking it is seen as an incredibly abhorrent act with dire consequences that it would be easy to fail to imagine someone doing it.

You were right, Spartan, House Stark's words are indeed "Winter is Coming". The Lannisters are the house that has a common phrase "A Lannister always pays his debts" and actual House Words: "Hear Me Roar!", and the Starks unfortunately did at the Red Wedding. If you can make it through this, you can make it through anything. Right before they left Harrenhall, Jaime even said to Roose Bolton, "Tell Robb Stark,'The Lannisters send their regards," before they left.
