I 100% agree with your thoughts on having practical effects. They are so much easier to empathize with and engage with as an audience, the actors have an easier job as well, and I think altogether it is cheaper and less time consuming. One of the best things that come out of The Mandalorian is studios realizing that they can get the benefits of practical effects and just enhance it with CGI. Gizmo's voice was that of Howie Mandel, who would later reuse the voice for the animated series Muppet Babies, and Bobby's World. The animatronic mogwai and gremlin puppets were designed and created by Chris Walas and Rick Baker, and were frequently breaking down during shooting. The original script was more gruesome, with Gizmo morphing into Stripe, the gremlin leader. But then Spielberg had the brilliant idea to not turn him into a monster but to have him carried around in Billy's backpack, like in a “boy and his dog” movie.

In an original cut of the movie, the mom gets beheaded with it rolling down the steps in front of Billy. The movie is heavily re-edited with the mom killing all the gremlins seeming a bit excessive. It probably made more sense in the original cut.

Once more, a fantastic score by Jerry Goldsmith, only topped in its mania by the one for the sequel Gremlins 2. I think here and there are the only cameos of Goldsmith: Here in Gremlins he appears at the inventor's convention in the phone booth behind Mr. Peltzer. (As mentioned, there's H.G. Wells time machine from the George Pal movie in the BG, and Steven Spielberg wheels through the frame in an electric wheelchair.)

The movie is chuck full of iconic easter eggs, with a tip of the hat to scores of movies plus many of the plays are well-known extras who had appeared in many fan-favorite movies. In particular, the plow drive has been in several classic Sci-fi movies. This movie is a virtual Bonanza of big-screen trivia wealth

The Bitch Lady was played by Polly Holliday who was "Flo" on a sitcom called "Alice". She was so popular they spun her off on her own series, "Flo". She was a much more likeable character than Mrs. Deagle. Rand was played by Hoyt Axton, who was an accomplished singer-songwriter before getting into the movies.

"The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad," "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger," "20 Million Miles to Earth," "Jason and the Argonauts," and "Clash of the Titans" (from '81; not the CGI thing from the 2000s) are all worth a watch.

Great reaction - this movie took you where no bunny has gone before - I recommend the sequel - and if you say you like ominous, smoky, bubbly practical effects, there are a couple of upcoming Star Trek episodes that will appeal to you, including one of my favorites - re Gremlins, I think the episode where Kirk is split in two is a good reference here - we have an ambivalent response to both sides - we see 80s culture w males as overgrown kids, and that's what the Gremlins reflect, for better or worse - the women are the adults and the "moms", who mostly look on and respond to the male behavior - the guys we like or dislike are mostly showing good and bad qualities of kids, and Gizmo and the Gremlins amplify this several degrees, and show the chaos that would ensue in society if this tendency were let loose - but one thing that's really clever is how they're able to make us identify w the Gremlins even at their worst - they're our own Id, and they're often doing things that we ourselves want to see happen, esp their treatment of the characters we dislike (Monkey Shines is a movie that explores this - also see Freud re these forces inside us that we try to control) - and notice that the most hateful character is the cat lady, the wicked witch authority figure; I think the filmmakers here are responding to some specific trauma they experienced from such a figure during their own adolescence, maybe a hated teacher (those of us who saw this when it came out recognized the actress as Flo from the sitcom Alice, the comic relief Southern waitress who'd famously challenge ppl to "Kiss mah gree-its!") - the Chinese elder is the cultural stereotype of the Wise Mystic Oriental (see Edward Said and Orientalism re our culture's mishmash view of the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia - how it's a kind of colonial wish-fulfillment fantasy that underscores and complements our actual historical relations w those regions) - in this case, the Chinese figure acts as the corrective Adult in the Room, who makes a summary statement how our culture has not yet reached adulthood - and remember this was during peak 80s Spielberg-Lucas nostalgia for childhood escapism, so Gremlins indulges that and also chides it - and the young male hero is the Kirk figure, representing the audience and the filmmakers, who's endlessly seeking the ideal happy medium between the two extremes, here balanced between child and adult

9:01 Absolutely agree with you about practical effects! ♥Practical effects are real artwork, while CGI just looks boring, slimy and artificial. So glad you mentioned it. If you want to react to a modern movie with world class practical effects I would suggest _The Lord of the Rings_ trilogy, if you haven't seen it. They are considered the best fantasy movies ever made. Although it has some CGI, most of the fantasy world is created with incredibly beautiful models. A number of the main characters are "hobbits", a race of people about 4 feet high, and they portrayed them in scenes with full-size humans without using CGI at all, by forced perspective.
@Ravenscroft829 ай бұрын
Corey Feldman was in Lost Boys and also was in Friday the 13th the Final chapter (even though it wasn't). Great reaction as usual. Practical effects are great, I can barely stand to watch CGI, let alone AI. We had carolers come for years, my mom was a member of a local church and didn't get out a lot. Don't think they do it anymore. Phoebe Cates was a semi big thing in the 80s, starring also in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Paradise, a Blue Lagoon knockoff (both R rated).

Depictions of these creatures vary widely. Stories about them and references to them as the causes of especially inexplicable technical and mental problems of pilots were especially popular during and after World War II."
