One moment from this that always stood out to me was when Harry was walking out into the forest to face death and he was surrounded by those who loved him. It always stood out to me that they seemed to grieve with him and love him, but never tried to convince him not to go. They all seemed to recognize and honor the personal sacrifice.

Voldemort didn't send Bellatrix and Crouch Jr. after Neville's parents. At that point Voldemort had tried to kill Harry and lost his body so he was out of the equation completely. They knew the Longbottom's were Aurors and thought that they must have had information on the disappearance of old Voldy...which is why they were torturing them. It's not clear exactly what the Longbottom's knew about what happened to Voldemort in Godric's Hollow but they gave no information, which is what kept their torture going to the point where they were driven mad. The biggest reason Voldemort went for Harry is that he was a half blood just like him...in spite of Neville being pure blood and his parents being Aurors he saw Harry as the bigger threat because he saw more of himself in Harry.

Fred's death hit me the absolute hardest in the entire series. The idea of George having to go through the rest of his life without his other half was so heartbreaking, and I think I would have traded just about anyone to save him. I read that they could only do a few takes of George crying over him because it was just too difficult for the actor to imagine his brother dead.

Voldemort grew up in an orphanage. He never felt love from his parents. That's why he didn't predict that Lily's love could save Harry, even from Avada Kedavra. It was also unexpected to him that Narcissa would lie about Harry's death since the Malfoys have always been too scared to do anything against him. A mother's love is what ends him; something he can't even underestimate because he doesn't even know that it exists. Dumbledore told Harry to pity the living, especially those who live without love. He's telling Harry that Voldemort is to pity, not to be scared of.

I think Draco's redemption here is realistic. Not everyone can go from bad to good. Everything is a process. I think the fact that he realized that just because you have been going down the wrong path, doesn't mean you have to keep going down the wrong path. You can walk away. Also, that despite you being brought up a certain way, there comes a time in all our lives when we stop blaming our parents for our problems and make our own decisions in our life. Draco walking away was his version of braveness, and it likely saved the life of his whole family.

Agreed, that deleted scene where Malfoy throws Harry a wand is sooo incredibly out of character. Alan Rickman actually knew Snape’s backstory from the beginning. He was sworn to secrecy for over a decade and was able to use it for character development, when he made a few choices throughout the series that the director was confused about he just said it would all be explained later but it works. I wish he was still around to see it all that has come from it.

I think Snape has better characterization in the movies rather than the books for this one reason. I don’t think JK knew Snape’s backstory when she was writing the first couple books because Snape is downright AWFUL to Harry and his friends the entire time. Making Hermione cry on several occasions, slashing Harry across the face when he calls him a coward, being so brutal towards Neville who is a literal 11 year old child in the first book. Alan Rickman knew how to give the character little flashes of sincere heroism that makes his reveal at the end feel so much more believable.

@@davismorganadhd No Rowling had the entire story planned before she wrote the first book -- not all the details but the broad strokes and absolutely Snape's story. @@davismorganadhdSnape behaved that way because he was a bad person. He was a bad person who did good things, but he was still a bad person. We can accept his value and respect him for his sacrifices to the mission without glorifying him and pretending he was a better person than he was. The world isn't divided up into purely good and purely evil people; people are complex, and Snape is a good example of that.
@escariote666

@@davismorganadhd Couple of things: 1. Snape was awful to Harry, because he looked like James who bullied Severus for almost their whole time at Hogwarts. 2. He treated Hermione like that, because she was from muggle family as was his father who abused him. 3. It isn't said in movies but the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort could be about one other child - Neville. If Voldemort knew the whole prophecy (thanks to Snape's not so good sneaking skills), he could've aim Longbottoms instead of Potters and Lilly wouldn't die, so to not blame himself Severus put all his guilt on Neville. 4. There are numorous details that are in the books which show JKR had it all planned before - for example the first question Snape gives to Harry on potions class. I'm not saying these explain Snape's behavior but JKR was very good at describing the whole "bullied become bullies" thing.

Narcissa, Draco's mom, knew immediately that Harry was still alive. But this moment showed that she loved her son more than she cared about Voldemort's cause. She asked Harry if Draco was still alive. And when he nodded, she lied to Voldemort. Neville is literally a much bigger character in the books. Especially in the lore. He was very nearly The Chosen One. He and Harry were both born around the same time. Their parents both defied Voldemort three times. The only reason it was Harry is because Voldemort himself chose Harry. Voldemort did not believe it could've been the Longbottoms and yet, the boy he didn't believe could be his equal was the one who made it possible for Harry to defeat him (by killing Nagini).

Since you guys were rooting for Malfoy to have some sort of redemption, I thought I'd mention a little detail that was deleted from the original script. Originally, after Harry threw himself out of Hagrid's arms (revealing that he was, in fact, alive) and took off running, Draco was supposed to throw his wand to Harry, since Harry's wand was broken and couldn't be used. If you look it up, there are quite a few 'Draco redemption' scenes that they removed from the final cut of the movie. (He supposedly help Slytherin house escape the dungeons so that they wouldn't be left to die.) I wish they left some of them in, it would have given Draco the character development we were all rooting for.

I thought the way he whispers "expecto patronum" was also very meaningful in terms of his own magical powers and the intense happiness of lilys memory. Harry had to basically scream it at the top of his lungs to conjure the patronus charm, thats not to say Harry isn't powerful but that Snape is much much more powerful than what I thought. I love these movies because each time I rewatch them, I notice details like that. Theres many scenes and phrases with a lot of depth throughout the series but Rowling doesn't make a big show out of it, she shows you instead of throwing the book at you because she trusts you are (or will be) smart enough to understand. I’m sure this was explained 500 times already but I’m behind watching these lol. So just fyi re the number of horcruxes-the book explains it much better. V was obsessed with the number 7 (they even show him with 7 rocks on the window ledge at the orphanage). So his plan was always to split his sole inTo 7 pieces (not make 7 horcruxes). So he made 6 horcruxes (book, ring, necklace, crown, his snake, and the cup) and Voldemort myself was the 7th piece of his own soul. But like Dumbledore said. Harry was the horcrux V never intended to make. so that’s where the confusion was. Again, y’all did an AMAZING job figuring out things on a first watch, especially bc eventually the movies really leaned into the idea that 90% of those watching were book readers so they don’t always give you all the pieces you need to completely understand everything as a movie watcher only.

@@BaddMedicine This is the first time I noticed Filch grabbing a broom and sweeping up after the battle. There are so many blink-and-you'll-miss-it scenes in these movies that add nuance to the characters. In addition to the videos, how about trying some fanfiction? Some stories explore the "what if" angles... like what if Hermione had been sorted into Slytherin? There's a very long story about that (chapter 399 should be posted by now). Other stories explore the characters' inner thoughts. There are some about Sirius trying to cope with the utter loneliness of Azkaban (prisoners have almost no human contact there), or Remus coming across an old book in the Hogwarts library and remembering the time when he was a student, reading it, and trying to explain poetry to a teenage Sirius. It's heartbreakingly sad, but at the same time it's a beautiful little story. Some of them are hilarious. There's a series of stories that start out with Sirius becoming Harry's emotional support dog, and living at the Dursleys' house with Harry... and the Dursleys don't know that this huge black dog is really a wizard.

In the books there's a more in depth exploration of what Horcruxes are. Tom Riddle got the info from a really horrible dark arts book in Hogwarts, and in that book it advised against splitting your soul more than once(That's what he wanted Slughorn to tell him) He had rendered his soul so incredibly unstable by the time that he killed Harry's parents that it just broke apart every time he killed someone. When he attempted to kill Harry, his body took the curse and his body died there and his main soul left that place as a spectral being, but another piece attached itself to Harry, hence the scar. In the books, Dumbledore looks triumphant when Harry tells him that Voldemort used his blood to come back, Dumbledore explains why when he talks to Harry in King's Cross. Mainly, by using Harry's blood to survive, Voldemort had taken a part of Lily's portection to him, thus tethering Harry to life, in a way Voldemort had become Harry's anti-horcrux.

@Afreshio 2 жыл бұрын
Most dissapointing thing about the Deathly Hallows movies is that Dumbledore's backstory is left to much to be desired. They left so much out. I would've sacrificed some useless minutes and told better that backstory. And I'm not talking about Reeta's book about Dumbledore, but the King Cross's limbo scene with Harry was so much meaty in the books, and even Dumbledore cries and reveals so much about him (coincidentally in the fifth movie, OoTP they did weak a similar scene with a true moment with Harry at the end; maybe Gambon didn't have that range to cry and be emotinal? In the movies Gambon interprets a more detached and cold Dumbledore). Also making Dumbledore look so bad and manipulative, artificially. In Snape memories they make it so forced that many movigoers to this day have the wrong opinion of Dumbledore. Dumbledore cared about ending Voldemort and winning the war for the right reasons, but he cared so much for Harry, truly loved him. Theres little of that in the movies. In the books we are given more warmth moments between those two. Yates just did it dirty. Other dissapointing thing was not explaining Wand lore right. Which was vital to understand Voldemort's defeat. You can see these three reactors confused when Harry just kills him (it's obvious for a book reader that Voldemort's curse rebounded the same way he tried to murder Harry when he was a baby). I'm among the camp that wants a Harry Potter series, where we can get soo much lore, info, more scenes left out or done badly, etc. It should be amazing if the budget its fine. HBO its perfect for that.

Dumbledore put the stone inside the snitch and that's why he gave it to Harry. The stone came from the ring Dumbledore shows Harry in Half Blood Prince. The ring was a Gaunt family heirloom, Voldemort's mother was a witch of a horrible but extremely old pureblood family that came from the Slytherin bloodline. Voldemort's mom fell in love with a Muggle, used a love potion on him and ran away with the Ring and The Locket.

A couple of things from the book: The final duel scene in the book was better. It took place in the Great Hall, with everyone watching. And when Voldy finally died, he didn't just dissolve into ashes - he just fell over, like an ordinary dead person. Driving home the fact that he really wasn't anyone special, despite his own opinion of himself. Neville does not end up with Luna, but he does become a professor of herbology at Hogwarts. (Presumably, Professor Sprout retired at that point.)

Yes, i agree, the all fight between Harry and Voldemort is so stupid in the film. That was a big disapointment and a reason why I can't make up my mind on this film. It seems like some scenes are missing, like at one time, Voldy has Harry all tied up then the scene later, he's free. And let just embrace and jump from the tower and scratch each other's face. Like wtf, this is laughable. This is a big low for me and i'm pissed at this film because the rest is quite good.

IMPO i don't think Voldemort Deserved to be killed in the great hall in front of everyone, just because its done one way in a book doesn't mean it has to play out in movies. Harry putting the elder wand back in dumbledore's tomb should have stayed in the book, harry breaking the wand signifies nobody should have this much power, and what if another wizarding war happened Hogwarts isn't exactly the safest place in the world from ravenous hungry spiders to 3 headed guard dogs to a dangerous womping willow to trolls Not trying to have a go, just trying to point out not everything has to play out how it did in books

@@AlexisStreams I think it's important that Voldy was defeated in front of many witnesses. And there is no magical reason for him to flake away into dust like Thanos just snapped. When he kills Cedric, the body just falls. When he killed James and Lily, their bodies just fell. Here, he used the same killing curse, and it rebounded on him - this time, with no horcruxes to preserve his life. But you're right about the wand. Most people I know say that Harry breaking the wand was a more satisfying ending that putting it back in the grave. If you believe the literal story of the Three Brothers, the Elder Wand was made by Death, with the hidden goal of causing more death, as wizards try to kill each other for it. So yeah, not only should no one be trusted with that much power, but also people shouldn't be continuously engaging in violence to win it.

Something they totally skip over in the movies is Rita Skeeter writing a memoir of sorts about Dumbledore after his death. His father went to Azkaban for attacking some muggles who attacked his daughter, Ariana, when they saw her use underage magic. This caused Ariana to be unable to control her magic. The rest of her life, she has to be protected and cared for by their mother, Kendra. Albus, a genius even at a young age, grew discontent with the amount of attention Ariana required and began to distance himself from his family, something Aberforth, the middle child, grew angry at him for. Aberforth was much closer to Ariana than Albus. Soon after Albus graduated Hogwarts and was making big plans to see the world, Kendra was killed in an explosion of accident magic caused by Ariana. Albus was forced to cancel his plans and care for his siblings, something he grew to resent them for. He felt like he was being held back. The Dumbledores lived in Godric's Hollow, the same town that the Potters would eventually live in before they were murdered. Down the way, the old lady from Part 1 had her nephew, Gellert Grindelwald, move in with her after he was expelled from Durmstrang. Albus and Gellert became very close friends, as Gellert was also a genius, and Albus, who was gay, fell in love with Gellert as he felt he had finally met an equal. They talked about how they would subjugate the muggle world 'for the greater good,' and ways to obtain the Deathly Hallows to become the masters of death. An argument broke out between Albus and Aberforth about Albus' plans and Ariana, and Gellert got involved. Somehow, spells started flying, and when the dust cleared, Ariana was dead. This broke both Albus and Aberforth, and Gellert fled back to Eastern Europe. Albus abandoned his plans for world domination and instead became a teacher at Hogwarts. Gellert would go on to become a Dark Lord, who rose to power and started the World Wizarding War, which happened around the time of WW2. Grindelwald was defeated by Albus at the height of his power in his own castle while he wielded the Elder Wand. Albus took the wand and imprisoned Gellert in his own castle, Nurmengard. Albus never sought power because he saw what it did to his friend and love. He always regretted what happened to Ariana and it became the lynchpin of his life. He accepted several positions in the International Wizarding Community government but never sought regional power because he was afraid of what he would do if he gained that power, which is why he remained headmaster of Hogwarts despite being the greatest wizard since Merlin. When he found the Ring of Slytherin that Voldemort had made into a horcrux, he realized that the stone in the ring was the Resurrection Stone. Longing to be reunited with his dead family, he put the ring on without thinking of the consequences to use the stone, and found that the ring was cursed, which is why his hand was rotting off in Half Blood Prince. His obsession with the Deathly Hallows was also why he had Harry's Cloak at the beginning of the series. He was studying Death's Cloak.

Little fun fact they never touch upon in the movies: Neville had as much chance of being the chosen one as Harry. The prophecy said "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... *born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...*" So basically the requirements were: A child born to parents who have defied Voldemort 3 times. (Both Harry and Neville's parents were part of the original Order of the Phoenix and defied Voldemort regularly) The child will be born at the end of July. (Harry's B-day is July 31st. Neville's is July 30th.) The Dark lord will mark him as his equal. (This is the scar. If Voldemort had decided to kill Neville and his parents instead of the Potter's then, Neville would be the one with the lightning scar) The power the Dark lord knows not is the power of Lily's love that saved Harry when Voldemort tried to kill him. Just as above Voldemort chose Harry, had he chose Neville this would apply to him instead. This is also why Neville is able to find the prophecy in The Order of the Phoenix because only those mentioned within the prophecy can remove the record from the Hall of Mysteries.

The funny part is, Neville Longbottom fit the prophecy of the "Chosen One" just as well as Harry did....both were born at the end of July to parents that had defied Voldemort 3 times. It was Voldemort's choosing to attack Harry, and thus marking him, that made him the "Chosen One." What makes it even more ironic (they go into far more detail in the book on this) was that despite all his big talk about those with "pure" magical blood being better than "mudbloods" and blood traitors, Voldemort went after the child who was most like him, a half-blood (one parent from a Muggle family, one from a Wizarding family). Both of Longbottom's parents were from Wizarding families. Harry's dad was from a Wizarding family, but his mom was from a Muggle family. Voldemort's mom was a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin, but his dad was a Muggle. So he saw Harry as a reflection of himself and thus the greater threat.

A few of my favourite things from the books missing from this - 1) the trio makes really good friends with Kreacher (the elf at Sirius' house), and they give him the fake horcrux from RAB (who Kreacher loved) as a thank you for being so nice to them. Then Kreacher goes to Hogwarts and leads all the house elves in this battle. 2) Harry survived the avada curse because his mother sacrificed herself through love for him. So in this movie when Harry sacrifices himself with love of everyone that's fighting with him, he gives them all that same protection - that's why no one dies (like Neville or Mrs Weasley) after that. That's why throughout the movie Dumbledore always says Love is the magic that Voldemort will never understand. 3) The Neville thing - his bookend of these stories is that in the first movie he stands up to his friends, and in this last movie he stands up to Voldemort.

My headcanon has also always been that Muggles and Wizards, in general, quite aloof. Wizards in particular tend to care more about whimsy and are scientifically behind the Muggles because they don't really care to understand scientific advancement and how strictly logical it is as a science. Potions is pretty much the closest to "wizard science" as there is, which is why there aren't a *ton* of really good potionmakers. I'd imagine even among potionmakers in the Wizarding World, few bother with the Polyjuice Potion because of its implied complexity and precision required to properly brew it.

The reason Neville and Luna wasn't at the station at the end is that Neville went on to marry Hannah Abbott, from Hufflepuff. Luna went on to marry Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander. I'm so happy to see that you three are fans of the movies :)

It's been over a decade now, but getting to see this opening night is still the greatest theatre experience I've ever had. There was so much love and pride in the audience, people of all different ages and backgrounds who had grown with the series and were now sharing the final moments together. Every time I see a reaction to these films it brings me that same emotion ❤

"you have your mothers eyes" was said to harry by anyone who ever meant anything to him, that's what made snape saying it so important. the realization after all these years that he truly cared. harry's invisibility cloak is actually a hallow but didnt play much of a part in that story in the films. (something to do with harry being a decendent of the peveral brother). snapes memories will always be my favourite scene in any of the films, such an amazing character, once in a life time story telling in my opinion. if you guys have any potter questions i'd be happy to help you figure stuff out. but definitely worth either reading the books through or listening to the audio books. happy you enjoyed the franchise!

I'm always going to say that Snape is one of the best characters ever and one of the best guys in the Harry Potter movies. He knew that he would be hated by everyone forever for what he's about to do but he still did what was right. Also, not sure if you noticed it, during that Snape vs McGonagall showdown, Snape never attacked her, he only deflected her attacks, and that too towards the two deatheaters behind him. He also took their wands when he flew, he made sure they don't hurt anyone. He was the only deatheater who could conjure a patrenous. Coming to Neville, Harry wasn't technically the chosen one until Voldemort marked him himself, Neville could have been the chosen one as he was also born during the same period that the prophecy stated instead and that is one of the reasons why Snape was bitter towards him for if he was the chosen one, Lilly would have still been alive.

Up to this day, Snape remains to be one of the most complex characters I've ever come across. His story is so painful and complicated, his heart was good but sometimes misguided or hateful, his actions varied from good to bad... I ended the series with both respect and resentment for him.

I can not emphasize enough how much more the book goes into detail on this one. The movie did a good job, I’m glad they split it into two bc it was necessary. I’m not really a fan on their take of the final battle between harry and voldemort but I understand they went with the more ~cinematic~ thing. In the book they’re literally just circling each other in the great hall and harry is basically telling him everything he didn’t put together, it’s just very satisfying to watch Harry be like YOURE DUMB TOM!! lmao I’m in the minority with the snape stuff, I feel like the movies tried to rewrite history and left out how awful he actually was to literal children. There’s literally a bit in this book where dumbledore is like “did u ask voldemort to just kill harry and spare lily” and snape is like “yeah he said no :(“ and dumbledore is like “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!” snape didnt give a shit about harry, he was obsessed with his mother. The reason he and lily stopped being friends was that he called her a mudblood and decided to be a dick to her bc James liked her. James grew up, snape never did. James potter doesn’t get the respect he deserves in these movies!! He went to voldemort first and lily got to run with harry, that’s why his body was in the hall. Ok I’ll stop ranting lmao. ALSO NEVILLE!!! I’m sure there are other comments that say this but Neville could have been the boy who lived bc his birthday is also at the end of July and his parents had previously defeated voldemort. Voldemort chose harry. But harry and Neville are forever tied bc of it and I’m so glad he got his hero moment in this. In the book it’s insanely dark, he has the sorting hat on his head and voldemort LIGHTS IT ON FIRE WHILE ITS ON HIM?? I gotta stop my comment before I write a novel as long as this one Lmao. Excited about your round table talk!! Hope you all give the books a read/listen!! There’s so much more juicy stuff in the books!!

I appreciate in the books much more how much of a dick Snape is. It makes him a much more complex character. Alan's portrayal of Snape in the movies works because there's so many other important things to focus on and as far as screenwriting goes it makes more sense to have that moment easier on Snape so it's more impactful at the moment of reveal.

I really hope they would see this. Everything I wanted to say, especially about Snape. Also in the books you know more about Dumbledore and how much he cares about Harry. I think in the movies he was protraited like a manipulator with no feelings, but once you read the books, people with common sense could see that he is just human, and was trying to do what's necessary while trying so hard to protect Harry and find a way to make him survive the final deed.

I’m with you on the snape bit. I hate how people just forgive snaps because he felt he was weirdly entitled to Lily. He obsessed over a high school crush and when she didn’t have the same feelings he basically joined the Nazis. Even as a teacher he routinely made fun of students appearances and abilities, and didn’t teach a damn thing.

8:22 People are aware that polyjuice potion exists but very few are able to brew it. It's an extremely difficult potion to make and therefore not many people assume everyone's wearing someone else's skin. Besides, there's a spell that does the exact same thing(If I'm not mistaken) as the polyjuice potion and it's much easier to perform. Since places like Hogwarts and Gringotts have spells in place that check if such spells are being used and stop the spells from working, people assume no one enters these places while disguised(same spell that checks other spells does not check potion effects like the transfiguration effect of the polyjuice potion). But as they entered inner Gringotts on the railroad car, the waterfall did stop the polyjuice potion's effect so they're not completely dumb.
@ntertanedangel
@ntertanedangel 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's a spell that does what polyjuice does, but you can change your appearance by transfiguring parts of your face. I guess if you were really really good at transfiguration you could take on someone else's appearance, but it would probably be hard to do it well
