I was like that for a long time. I've been into fantasy for close to 40 years (thanks to starting out with Fighting Fantasy (British version of D&D), going on to D&D, getting hooked on Dragonlance, and so on. But the merchandising and ads for HP were just so relentless that I decided I would NOT get sucked in. I already have over 1000 Star Trek books and fanzines in my personal library, as well as a few thousand other books (collected over the last 50 years), and so far I've kept my HP collection down to the novels and DVDs (helps that most of it's godawful expensive). I never saw these movies in the theatre and only tried them when the science fiction channel here in Canada ran a HP marathon on a holiday weekend. So I went into the movies cold, never having read the novels, and it was confusing. The channel ran the first 3 movies 3 times, then the next 3 movies 3 times, and then the final two 3 times. When you go from later to earlier ones, look at Sirius Black and wonder, "Aren't you dead?" and forget which movie is which when it's all a 3-day blur... it took several of these holiday marathons to finally get some things straight. The videos that analyze the novels and movies really helped explain stuff. And to this day I have never seen these movies from 1-8. That's not how the SF channel here shows them. But if the guys here are going to be missing the movies once they're over... WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FANFICTION. Fanfiction.net - just one fanfic site among many - has over 800k Harry Potter stories. Archive Of Our Own (AO3) has stories. Wattpad has stories. Other sites I haven't found but have vaguely heard of have stories. They range from really short to ones that are hundreds of chapters... like one in which Hermione is sorted into Slytherin and Snape is her mentor because he respects her dedication to studying magic. There are stories in which Sirius Black lives, adopts Harry, and they have (mostly) happy lives. There's one in which little Harry gets away from the Dursleys, somehow wanders into Diagon Alley, and is found and raised by the Goblins. Some stories are hilarious (like when Dumbledore allows Sirius to live with Harry at the Dursleys disguised as Harry Potter's emotional support dog... and the Dursleys don't know he's really a wizard). And some stories are absolutely heartbreaking... like one I finished reading yesterday, in which Harry is killed by the Dursleys at age 7 and becomes a ghost who haunts Hogwarts, or when Remus finds an old book in the Hogwarts library and remembers the conversation he and Sirius had about it when they were teenagers. So there's no shortage of more Harry Potter stories out there. Oh, and about pronunciation... yikes. "Lumos" is the spell, and Hermione's name has 4 syllables. HER-MY-O-NEE. Sorry, but pronunciation is something I notice, as people tend to mangle my name at times even though it should be easily readable.

@@Aro7241 exactly. This is why this movie is my least favourite adaptation out of all the Harry Potter movies. It just doesn't capture the essence of the book, which is the back story of Tom Riddle becoming Voldemort. Also it kinda piss me off a little bit of how they portray Draco in this movie. They only show the audience that he is a death eater, therefore he is a villain. They don't explain that despite being a bully in school, he doesn't want to be a death eater and suffer throughout the year. He just have to do it because Voldemort threaten to kill his mother. Instead they turn it into some teenage drama movie. Don't get me wrong. @@tapoemt3995 yes it is, but your soul and your body are separate. I can’t remember word for word the explanation but it said if you were stabbed by a sword your soul would remain unharmed but horcruxes are the opposite they contain the soul and if they are destroyed, so is the soul. Murder rips the soul and he uses this to his advantage to make the horcrux. His soul is in shreds from all of his murders but they don’t damage his body or weaken him. It does detach him from his humanity though. He didn’t ever place value on a pure, whole soul which is part of why Harry is so dangerous to him. Dumbledore says something like ‘Voldemort was so intent on ripping his soul apart in his strive for power he never stopped to think about the value of a whole one.’ So in short you can be dead and your soul is fine and you can be alive and your soul is broken and you can be alive with no soul at all (like what happens to a person who is kissed by a dementor).

This book is my favorite of the series. It goes a lot more in depth into Voldemort’s past. We see his mother and father and how he ended up where he was. Tom’s mother was a witch that was from a pure blood family that treated her badly cause she wasn’t very good at magic. She gave Tom’s father, Tom Riddle senior, a love potion and they ran off together. When she found out she was pregnant she stopped giving him the potion believing the baby would be enough to make him stay, she was wrong. He left her alone, poor, and pregnant. She went to London to give birth and lived long enough to give him his name, Tom (after his father) Marvolo (after her father) Riddle. Voldemort detested his mother for not living and raising him. He eventually found his grandparents and father and killed them all.

I cannot wait to see your reactions to the last 2 movies. This is also one of my favorite movies from this series as it shifts to very dark again and we truly see just what Harry needs to do. It also is such a good movie to bring Draco into the light and truly give him the spotlight. It allows us to see how he truly is, he just a boy who is pressured into all the wrong things. Especially in the scene where he’s supposed to kill Dumbledore, you see how much he is being forced to conform. This movie truly shows his character development and his maturity. The director of that movie told Tom Felton (Draco) that this was Draco’s movie and if they can get just 1 ounce of sympathy for Draco then he did his job in acting very well. Again, I cannot wait to see your reactions to the last movies and it’s been a privilege to watch you guys react and go through this magical journey!

57:06 Harry tore past Hagrid and his opponent, took aim at Snape’s back, and yelled, “Stupefy!” He missed; the jet of red light soared past Snape’s head; Snape shouted, “Run, Draco!”and turned. Twenty yards apart, he and Harry looked at each other before raising their wands simultaneously. “Cruc -” But Snape parried the curse, knocking Harry backward off his feet before he could complete it; Harry rolled over and scrambled back up again as the huge Death Eater behind him yelled, “Incendio!” Harry heard an explosive bang and a dancing orange light spilled over all of them: Hagrid’s house was on fire. “Fang’s in there, yer evil -!” Hagrid bellowed. “Cruc -” yelled Harry for the second time, aiming for the figure ahead illuminated in the dancing firelight, but Snape blocked the spell again. Harry could see him sneering. “No Unforgivable Curses from you, Potter!” he shouted over the rushing of the flames, Hagrid’s yells, and the wild yelping of the trapped Fang. “You haven’t got the nerve or the ability -” “Incarc -”Harry roared, but Snape deflected the spell with an almost lazy flick of his arm. “Fight back!” Harry screamed at him. “Fight back, you cowardly -” “Coward, did you call me, Potter?” shouted Snape. “Your father would never attack me unless it was four on one, what would you call him, I wonder?” “Stupe -” “Blocked again and again and again until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!” sneered Snape, deflecting the curse once more. “Now come!” he shouted at the huge Death Eater behind Harry. “It is time to be gone, before the Ministry turns up -” “Impedi -” But before he could finish this jinx, excruciating pain hit Harry; he keeled over in the grass. Someone was screaming, he would surely die of this agony, Snape was going to torture him to death or madness - “No!” roared Snape’s voice and the pain stopped as suddenly as it had started; Harry lay curled on the dark grass, clutching his wand and panting; somewhere overhead Snape was shouting, “Have you forgotten our orders? Potter belongs to the Dark Lord - we are to leave him! Go! Go!” And Harry felt the ground shudder under his face as the brother and sister and the enormous Death Eater obeyed, running toward the gates. Harry uttered an inarticulate yell of rage: In that instant, he cared not whether he lived or died. Pushing himself to his feet again, he staggered blindly toward Snape, the man he now hated as much as he hated Voldemort himself - “Sectum -!” Snape flicked his wand and the curse was repelled yet again; but Harry was mere feet away now and he could see Snape’s face clearly at last: He was no longer sneering or jeering; the blazing flames showed a face full of rage. Mustering all his powers of concentration, Harry thought, Levi - “No, Potter!” screamed Snape. There was a loud BANG and Harry was soaring backward, hitting the ground hard again, and this time his wand flew out of his hand. He could hear Hagrid yelling and Fang howling as Snape closed in and looked down on him where he lay, wandless and defenseless as Dumbledore had been. Snape’s pale face, illuminated by the flaming cabin, was suffused with hatred just as it had been before he had cursed Dumbledore. “You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? It was I who invented them - I, the HalfBlood Prince! And you’d turn my inventions on me, like your filthy father, would you? I don’t think so… no!” Harry had dived for his wand; Snape shot a hex at it and it flew feet away into the darkness and out of sight. “Kill me then,” panted Harry, who felt no fear at all, but only rage and contempt. “Kill me like you killed him, you coward -” “DON’T -” screamed Snape, and his face was suddenly demented, inhuman, as though he was in as much pain as the yelping, howling dog stuck in the burning house behind them -”CALL ME COWARD!”

The scene where you see him standing alone at the edge of the astronomy tower, many people think he’s contemplating jumping off. This is a reference to the scene earlier on the train where he’s talking to friends and says he would rather pitch himself of the astronomy tower than go back to Hogwarts. In this movie, he’s having to do awful things for Voldemort and was forced to become a death eater, all against his will. He’s similar to Harry in that while Harry didn’t choose to become the Chosen One, Draco didn’t choose to become a death eater. They were born into these roles and can’t escape them without dying. Draco was not forced against his will to become a death eater. If you have read the books, you would have known that Draco was elated at Voldemort's rebirth (end of GoF). Bellatrix also tells Narcissa that Draco initially felt honoured by Voldemort choosing him to murder Dumbledore. You can see this also in Dravo's words to Pansy Parkinson in the Hogwarts express scene at the beginning of HbP. Only after he went in so far did he truly realised the real meaning of Evil. In plainer terms, Draco got cold feet. Finally, please stop this family excuse. Not everyone gets trapped in a bad role due to their family. Andromeda Tonks and Sirius were also born into the pure blood fanatic family of 'Blacks' that contributed a lot of death eaters. Andromeda and Sirius never went to the dark side. All characters have the choice to escape family pressure (or roles as you say) without dying.

At the beginning of The Half Blooded Prince book, Dumbledore explains a lot to Harry, like why Harry was required to spend every summer at the Dursley’s. He also told Harry that the protection spells and wards that the Ministry of Magic placed on the Dursley”s house would expire when Harry became of age, which is 17 in their world. Dumbledore also told Harry that Sirius had left Harry everything, including the house that the Order of Phoenix used as headquarters, thus he inherited the house elf Creature as well.

Bad info. There are no MM protection spells placed on the Dursley's house. "Dumbledore sent Harry to live with the Dursleys because Petunia Dursley was his mother's own sister. She carries the same blood as Harry's. By allowing him houseroom, Petunia Dursley sealed the ancient magic that initiated when Voldemort tried to kill Harry after killing Lily when she intended to sacrifice herself to save Harry, and made sure that Voldemort or anyone with the Dark Mark (Idk the requirements for anyone beside Voldemort) cannot touch Harry while he's under the protection of his mother's sacrifice. It is referred to as "the blood sacrifice.
@cozenw32362 жыл бұрын
@@easysoul48able I perfectly understand that. But then why does he still have to go back to the Dursley’s after book 4? V. told all his followers that it was to be him and him alone to kill Harry. So there was no reason to think that they would go after Harry themselves, thus making that blood sacrifice mute. But Harry still went back there because of the ministry that put a tracker/tracer on him until he was 17. They couldn’t move him until it was gone, otherwise anyone would know where they moved him. Which leads me to recall that the ministry had placed protections on the house (I believe it was Dumbledore who explained this to Harry in book 7 (?). It makes sense or else V could have come rolling up on the Dursley’s house at any time, after book 4. At least I’m pretty sure that is the case. I’ll have to go back through the books again. But I’m 85% sure that was stated.

A key memory they left out, and the first memory Dumbledore showed Harry was the memory of a Ministry of Magic employee who visited the Gaunt family, the last surviving descendants of Salazar Slytherin. The Ministry employee was investigating an incident involving Morfin Gaunt attacking nearby muggles. Morfin lived with his father Marvolo and his sister Merope. He was reported to have attacked a wealthy young muggle who lived nearby that his sister had fallen in love with, Tom Riddle. The investigation led to the arrest and imprisonment of Morfin and Marvolo. Merope was free to pursue her love interest, who was not at all interested in her. So she seduced him with a love potion and kept him in such a state for years. When she became pregnant with his child, she thought she could stop giving him the potion and he would stay with her for the sake of the baby. But she was wrong. She traded what little valuables she had to get by up until it was time for the child to be born. She gave birth to him at an orphanage and only lived long enough to name him after the man she loved with her father's name being his middle name: Tom Marvolo Riddle. Since this child was conceived under the influence of a love potion, he could never know or fee love himself or be able to love others.
@poulamimukherjee47872 жыл бұрын
Also the little valuable she had was Slytherin's locket that she sold at borgin and brukes for just 10 Galleons. Tom riddle worked at borgin and Burke's after leaving Hogwarts. The next memory was the wealthy lady's house elf... Whom tom visited while working with borgin. She had valuables that borgin n brukes were interested in. She showed Tom the locket that she got from borgin and brukes and Helga Hufflepuff's cup. Later she was found murdered and the cup and locker were gone. The elf was framed for this. Also Dumbledore also gets Morphin's memory, where Tom visited him. And later that night Tom riddle senior and his family were found murdered. Morphin took the blame on himself. And the gaunt ring that he got from his father was gone.

The thing about Draco is that when he's a little kid, he doesn't see his dad as evil. Lucius is just his dad, Narcissa is just his mom, and crazy Aunt Bellatrix has been in Azkaban for most of Draco's life. It's not until years later that Draco starts to realize that his dad really isn't one of the good guys but there's conflict because it's his _family_ and what kid wants to go against his family? Draco's mother is Sirius Black's cousin, and everyone in the Black/Malfoy families saw what happened to Sirius when he turned his back on his parents for supporting Voldemort in the previous generation's war. Sirius had options that Draco didn't - to go to the Potters for help and protection. Draco has nobody to help him that way, so he feels trapped.

What a fun ride it's been to see you guys experience it all for the first time, not to mention it's once again made me notice things in these movies I hadn't before. I remember in this book, we find out that Hermione had advised Ginny back when Ginny was obsessed with Harry in the second film, that if she would just relax more around Harry, he could some day reciprocate her feelings, or something along those lines. I thought it was very nice of Hermione to be a lovely sister-in-law this early.

Wow, that was amazing watching with you guys. Snape's father was a muggle who was a drunkard and his mother was a witch named Eileen Prince. He was a half-blood and he's a Prince, Half-Blood Prince. Things will get more exciting! Though I did hate the part where they burned down the Burrow (Weasley house) and Fenrir being able to fly (well, all the death eaters flying was particularly stupid as it was only Voldemort who could do it). Fenrir Greyback is a werewolf, not a wizard. He was also the one who bit Remus Lupin when he was young which is why Remus became a werewolf as well.
@taylorv96612 жыл бұрын
Greyback is a wizard who became a werewolf after he was bitten just like Lupin, but he chooses to live the time between full moons as a werewolf as well and believes that all werewolves should. As time went on he began to become more wolf-like in appearance, but he still remains a wizard. He is able to apparate and cast non-verbal spells, etc. Rowling has said that only wizards can become werewolves. Muggles just die from the bite.
@VeganQuiche2 жыл бұрын
@@taylorv9661 this is incorrect. Greyback is NOT a wizard. He was a werewolf who initially had a mission to infect as many people as he could with lycanthropy. His plan was to build up enough werewolves to overthrow wizards. Since he didn't, he made himself of service to Voldemort. He was being used, as he was NOT a deatheater. Voldermort didn't feel him worthy to be one because he was a werewolf. Nobody but a pureblood would be considered worthy with the exception of Snape. Snape reminded him of himself, as he too, is a half blood. Which is why I never understood why all of those deatheater followed Voldermort in the first place. Smh. He had pureblood mania, but wasn't a pureblood himself. Very Hitler like. I believe that was the correlation JK Rowling was trying to make.

I've seen a lot of reactions to Dumbledore's death, but the utter disbelief on all your faces was enough to make me laugh. Brung low pretty quick though. The part where they gather and raise their wands together always chokes me up. I remember reading that part in the book. I just closed it and took a few minutes. Also, in the book, the teenage stuff in the middle is interlaced with Dumbledore and Harry exploring all those memories of Voldemort.

This is one of my favourite HP movies. Prof Slughorn is imo a very underrated character. "All hands on deck, Granger", Wallenby and his jumpiness when Harry catches him never ceases to make me laugh. I also think the scene when he finally divulges his memories is so powerful and especially love the shot where Harry holds his shaky hands to give him courage and comfort. Also, fun fact: The Weasley twins are able to open up the shop because Harry gives them his winnings from the Triwizard Tournament (Goblet of fire). And the scene Dumbledore casts the spell for mountain high fire shows how powerful of a wizard he truly was as at that moment he was at his weakest. Lastly, to the Oak's point, there was a scene in the books where Harry told Ron to believe in himself and he is great at quidditch if he didn't let nerves get in his way but as much as in the story it's a lesson for Ron, I really believe it's one of the few times where the lesson is actually meant for the reader/audience member and that is why I think the movie portrayed it perfectly. Great reaction as always and so keen for the next one!

I think yours are genuinely the best reactions to this series I've seen so far, so THANK YOU! You guys notice a lot of small things, underlying themes, lessons and bigger concepts and are able to string together stuff that a lot of first time watchers don't often really get or understand to appreciate. It's been a lot of fun to see you guys get into the story and especially seeing the Oak getting fully invested in the series after some understandable doubts in the beginning! If I didn't read the story as a kid and instead would watch the first movies now at the age of 30 I'd assume my reaction would've been exactly the same. At the start. I'll be honest, I was never that massive fan of these films, but that's only because I grew up reading the HP books. I've only slowly started to appreciate the films more and more in their own way, and I can only imagine how different experience it must be for someone watching the films for the first time and not be familiar with the story. The books are probably one of (if not the one) the greatest coming of age stories ever written and that's the reason why they're so universally loved and praised. I think the movies are great in their own right, but for me personally, the only problem was that... they were not the books. And they couldn't be. So it's pretty unfair comparison, and I assume if the books didn't exist and these movies were the only way to enjoy the story, I would've loved them unconditionally for what they are. Still, I think they're all great movies and the story itself is from start to finish absolutely amazing. And I'll be honest, watching you guys read the book and wait for a reaction would probably NOT make for the most engaging reaction videos, ha! The last two movies are the best in the series in my opinion, so you're going to have a fun time with those. Looking forward to watching the next one with you guys! :-)

So a part in the beginning of the book always stuck out to me. When Death Eater attacks increased against Muggles, despite repercussions from dark wizards or condemnation from the Muggles themselves, many witches and wizards risked their lives protecting their Muggle neighbors from attacks. They would also perform protection spells and enchantments over the homes of their Muggle neighbors. It was so selfless and caring to me.

I remember when I read this book. I went to Sam's Club with my mom and grandma on a Sunday, and my grandma bought it for me. I refused to leave the vehicle for the remainder of the shopping trip, and just read. Straight through the rest of the day, and through the night. I was so immersed that when Dumbledore died (at 4:30 am on a Monday morning) I let out this little shriek, dropped the book to the floor, and started quietly sobbing. My dad, who was getting up for work, heard and came rushing in to comfort me, and all I could say was "Dumbledore died 😭😭😭😭", and I remember to this day the look on his face as he realized I'd stayed up all night reading, him saying "go to bed, you have school" and just kind of shaking his head and walking out of my room 😂😂 I do believe that day was one of the few where my mom let me stay home without me being sick, because I was so emotionally drained (and tired) from it.

I read the book a few months before it was out in cinemas and I was so excited to see all of Voldemort's past on screen because it explained so much about him, the horcruxes and why he chose them, etc etc. I was so disappointed that they didn't mention any of that in the movie when I finally got to see it in cinemas. They should definitely have separated this one into two movies as well. If you guys have the occasion to read the books in your free time, I would definitely recommend them, they have so much more information, details, and the characters are also pretty different from the movie versions (Ron isn't as lame as he sometimes is portrayed in the movies).
@Sam-fq8dm2 жыл бұрын
yea, the first two movies in my opinion did a good job following the books even though they cut some things, but starting with prisoner of azkaban they just left out sooo much backstory in each movie, it really is kinda frustrating. This whole series is a decent adaptation but it easily could've been a masterpiece if they had split it into two parts for each book.
@kassiogomes84982 жыл бұрын
This is the worst adaptation out of the 7 books/films. I don't know what happened with the screenplay for this movie but it really didn't work. There is to much teen romance, we didn't need that much boring teenage drama when Voldemort's past is the main focus of the movie.
@Afreshio2 жыл бұрын
@@kassiogomes8498 Yes, I would love a two part Half-Blood Prince big screen adaptation, but the screenwriter could've squezeed more memories related to Voldemort/Dumbledore's lessons scene if they cut the stupid teenager romcom scenes. They overdid it. And then that stupid scene of the Burrow burning, god... just the worst adapted film of all. Although the OotP is a good contender for that title too. OotP is the tickest book of all the saga, so it definitely needs a two part like they did with the Deathly Hallows.

That last line in the book when Harry and Dumbledore almost made it out of the cave and Harry is so worried for Dumbledore’s health. At about the 22 minute mark: young Tom Riddle says "I can make bad things happen to people who are mean to me". The line in the book when Dumbledore meets Riddle is "people who annoy me". My son, now 35 years old, stopped watching the newly released Harry Potter films after film 3, When he was in middle school. However, I was hooked and totally appreciated the ingenious books and subsequently the wonderful Film adaptations, with their excellent casting, settings and production. I’m 72 and I still love to watch these films, I bought the set on BluRay a while back - *and now truly enjoy your collective adult reactions to these works of art, especially the messages present in them as a whole.* In my opinion, They’re allegorically about life in general - as you yourselves have pointed out - the good, the bad and the ugly - and what we each do with it. It’s reflective of the world we live in today. May I suggest borrowing the Blu-ray versions to view the “extras” and see how the films were made, from the start, the amount of effort put into the settings and props, and the cast as they literally grew up on set. The last 3 films shocked me as I viewed them in the theatre, there were tears, yes, I could not believe that Dumbledore died (and more to come), However, there is always, ultimately, a message of hope, and that is what makes these films great, we remember our humanity…. 👍🏼❤️

This movie is indeed very enjoyable, but it takes a lot of licenses in the adaptation of the book. This book's main focus is Harry and Dumbledore exploring Voldemort's past through various memories, there Dumbledore teaches Harry what he thinks all of the Horcruxes are, minus one that he didn't quite have enough info on. There's a fantastic scene when Young Man Voldemort asks recently appointed headmaster Dumbledore for a job at Hogwarts.

I always felt like this movie leaned too hard on the teen romance stuff, IMO trying to compete with Twilight. They left out a bunch of details that really hurt the film. The Half-Blood Prince reveal at the end, for example, feels like it comes out of nowhere because they cut out most of the details that led up to it. They also cut out most of the Voldemort/memory stuff, which would have set up the next movie better.

The Ron getting into the Hogwarts quidditch story line was actually from the Order of the Phoenix book. But it was left out of the movie so they added it to this movie. @@chipacita90 Hahaha no, you gotten that wrong. Btw i didnt say the slytherins didnt make the song before so idk why you say this as if it opposes me... I said "The Slytherins are really proud of his performance and call him their king and make a song for him." They sing the song during the match and as I said, the match doesnt go well for Ron, he keeps letting shots go in and they only win because Harry catches the snitch before the difference goes beyond 150. "But Ron let in two more goals. There was an edge of panic in Harry’s desire to find the Snitch now. If he could just get it soon and finish the game quickly . . . " At this point Ron has let in 4 goals, it's 40-0 and harry is worrying that he has to catch the snitch before Ron lets in any more. This was clearly an unsuccessful game for Ron as I said, his first match doesnt go well like the movies showed it to go. Ron admits it as well. "“I’m sorry,” Ron mumbled, looking at his feet. “What for?” said Harry. “For thinking I can play Quidditch,” said Ron. “I’m going to resign first thing tomorrow.” " He knows he played bad as well. And after Gryffindor won, the Gryffindor students didnt change it, they still played against Hufflepuff and lost with no such song, and then the match after that which was against Ravenclaw was when the Gryffindor version was introduced and Ron actually did good as a keeper.

Thing with Ron The Keeper (again from the books): Ron had been playing quidditch all his life, flying broom since he could sit and training with older brothers (and later with Ginny and Harry too) - usually the keeper. So At the time of the try-outs he had a really great set of skills at his disposal. It's not just confidence one needs to succeed but also a prior period of commitment and dedication and perseverance in pursuit of excellence. I could even actually drink the Felix potion and still not succeed in any of my dream endeavours, because I've never been able to commit - when the going gets tough I go do other stuff. Not Ron though. But it's untrue and harmful to say "all you need is to believe in yourself", and it also sells short the hard work he had done.
