Great reaction. I love this musical and saw the original off Broadway show when I was 6. I had a t shirt with a picture of the plant saying “Feed me”.

My college drama department put on the stage musical, and I was the lighting director. So much fun! The movie is pretty hilarious.

The voice of the Audrey 2 was Levi Stubbs from the 4 Topps.

Look up “I Can’t Help Myself” by the Four Tops. That’s Mr. Stubbs. He wore a magenta suit and sang “Mean Green” at the Oscar’s. There was a swaying Audrey II in the background.

The original movie was completely filmed in nine days and was Jack Nicholson’s first film role. Ellen Green was married to the man that performs the Stopholopogus (sp?) on Sesame Street. She almost got an Oscar nomination for this role. The Greek Chorus (the three girls) were amazing! The two thin girls always saw each other at every audition they went to. One would beat out the other and in visa versa. They always considered each other their main competition. They finally got to work together. And of course the is a Frank Oz film. Who else but the man who does Yoda and Miss Piggy could do Audrey II.

So glad to see you react to this movie. It's right up your alley with your music reactions! Would love to see you react to the original, Hairspray (1988).

In the original stage musical the plant wins. They actually filmed that ending (and the accompanying song, "Don't Feed the Plants") but ultimately went for the happy ending with the ? at the end. You can see the alternate ending on KZbin. Some of the songs were altered for the film, or dropped/replaced. "Mushnik and Son," where Mushnik convinces Seymour to let him adopt him, was dropped from the film, as was "Now (It's Just the Gas)," Dr. Scrivello's death scene. "The Meek Shall Inherit" was shortened to just the opening with the agencies and networks wooing Seymour; the rest of the song was replaced by "Some Fun Now," which wasn't in the stage show.

Now (It's Just the Gas) is my favorite song in the show. I'm a sucker for witty, rapid fire lyrics!

I knew Rick Moranis, Steve Martin and Bill Murray were in this (its hard to forget them! lol).. but there's a few others I had completely forgot or just didnt know were in the 80s remake of Little Shop. Like John Candy was in this?! and Miriam Margolyes?! Danny John-Jules?! (some great Canadian and British comedians) plus Jim Belushi? AND it was directed by Frank Oz 🤯 This was a nice little revisit.

One of the best musicals! I really prefer the stage show and ending. Also - the stage version only has 8 actors (plus someone manipulating the plant). The actor who plays the dentist plays all the other incidental parts - a bum on Skid Row in the beginning, customers coming through the shop when it starts getting more popular, etc. (That actor ends up having a lot of quick changes!)

Original stage version ending is _so_ much better. They redid the film ending after it scored poorly with test audiences. Moral to this story: test audiences are idiots. 🤦♂️
@Cubs-Den-Reactions6 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. The movie's story also gives Seymour a more sympathetic narrative; he is reluctant to feed people to the plant, which isn't the same in the stage play; losing Audrey, and the world, to Twoie is a fitting and narratively earned end in the play, but by the time we reach Audrey's last meal in the film, it wasn't earned anymore, he isn't killing people with relish or any joy, he hates it the whole time, he stays the "good guy" and thus gets that narrative conclusion, get the girl, possibly save the world...

Yes. Sal is interested in musicals, so on Patreon we vote to show him stuff. Little Shop makes sense, in that context: we've been through Chicago and Cabaret, Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, actual filmed plays like Hamilton and Come From Away. This week was the 1954 version of A Star Is Born. It's a ton of fun, if you're into musicals. Come vote and help us make the best choices!
