Rocky's speech to his son is one of the best scenes in the whole franchise, and one of Stallone's best pieces of writing imo. It's easy to forget how talented Stallone is because so much of his acting career has been parodied, but the dude is one of the better screenwriters to have worked in the biz in the past few decades. That scene, to me, proves it. Which is also why you should definitely check out the Creed series (which I know is on your to do list). Stallone and Jordan bring the magic back.

I loved balboa and I like MBJ but I’m not a fan of the creed series. His girlfriend in the movie came off as a bit bitchy and selfish to me and I liked the training part but everything around the boxing parts just fell flat and felt like dead time. Even in creed 2 when the baby turned out to be deaf I wasn’t upset and saw it coming. Never felt emotionally invested. In the rocky series Adrian was always neutral or on the fence for me. Sometimes I didn’t like her but she had redeeming qualities to outweigh it like supporting rocky even if it’s not what she wanted. She seemed hurt whenever he’d get punched but it almost felt like Adonis’s gf almost liked it at times. Creed always felt like if rocky grew up in the jersey shore with snooki. I didn’t like how they made it as Apollo’s illegitimate son cuz it made me feel like they reached and for Apollo to cheat it felt unrealistic. Apollo was a stand up guy and competitor. There was too many scenes that fell flat for one reason or another.

Random facts. His actual son played his son in Rocky 5. Sage Stallone. Who died at age 36. It adds even more to that scene when you consider that may have been in the back of Sly's mind when writing and acting this scene. Rocky 5 was the weakest Rocky film but I thought Sage did a really good job, for a young, first time actor.

Stallone's career was at its lowest by this stage after he had initially made it. The movie reflected once again his real life when he said he wanted to do another Rocky movie and no producer wanted to pay money as they thought "Who would wanna see a old washed up man box again? Hell, I even thought he was too old. When I saw this film I was impressed. It was the success of this comeback that gave Stallone his second wind and a strong followup career.

My other reason for liking Rocky 3 besides Clubber was how Stallone used that movie for a commentary of his life also. He had made it to the top because of the first 2 Rocky movies and gotten complacent with fame & felt he lost his edge & desire so that's how he came up with the idea for Rocky 3

I remember he was on a talkshow about this film and the Rambo film that released around the same time. And he said that the rocky franchise was pretty much done, but they could do more rambo. And yet, they've managed to continue the rocky-verse and I haven't heard of any new rambo films.

I like that Mason Dixon wasn't really a bad guy. He was hungry to face a real challenge and have his metal tested, unhappy that nobody seemed to be able to do that. He didn't expect Rocky to give him that, but when he realized he would he was glad and rose to the occasion, proving to himself that he had a warrior's heart after all.

good reaction. I'm from Germany and I have to say that the Rocky saga is my rock in my life. In January 2007 my father died and when I saw the scene in the cinema where Rocky was talking to his son, I just cried. That was the first and only time this happened to me. To this day I get tears in my eyes at this scene. But the speech has also become a kind of mantra for me

Dixon was one of the most interesting fighters Rocky ever faced, not above Apollo Creed, but a good Second Place. He's arrogant because he's the best in the world, he's mad because no one respects him because his fights are too easy, and he doesn't like Rocky at first not because of him, but because he has to fight Rocky to even get any recognition. He's not really a bad guy, not entirely a good guy, he's the Champion in a world where there's no competition. When Rocky finally gave him a fight worth having, everyone cheered for both men, moreso Rocky, but still. Dixon realize why everyone respected Rocky and gives him the respect He deserved, all the while Rocky has been nothing but respectful to Dixon.

Some people were saying that this was not needed. "Why is Stallone doing another Rocky film?" But just like the character, Sly proved the naysayers all wrong. It's a worthy finale. This was the start of Sly's brand new wave of success. Late 50s-Early 70s, he was practically living in the gym. The best shape of his life. Followed by 2 more Rambo films (2008/2019), The Expendables trilogy (2010-2014), The Escape Plan trilogy (2013-2019) Bullet To The Head//Grudge Match (both in 2013) and returning as Rocky In The Creed films. One of the hardest working legends period.

I loved that the first thing that we all asked the moment we saw Rocky was ask “where is Adrian?” Such an iconic character, she kept Rocky focused and always knew when to cheer and when to put him in his place. Rocky is the hero of this movies, but Adrian will always be the heart.

I didn't knew about this scene, thanks you all (is it on the standard edition DVD ? I should pay more attention to bonuses...) But actually, Paulie's breakdown while Rocky made his memory tour is better IMO, it's less obvious but it always give me the same vibes of regrets, pain, and self-disgust that is explicited in this deleted scene, it that sense, having both would kinda made the latter redundant.

That scene means more to me than what's shown.. Believe it or not my father resembled Rocky his looks his mannerisms how he spoke and how he cried. I can't watch a Rocky movie without thinking of my dad..I would say Rocky 1 and 2 and the recent ones "Rocky Balboa and Creed" anyhow, in that scene wherewhe is talking to Paulie he is talking about the hurt the pain inside that never left when Adrian died and its eating at him like a beast inside..how he didn't expect it to be this hard. Now the reason this scene speaks to me is because that's how I felt when my father my hero my role model died and I imagine myself saying what Rocky is saying in this scene. There are days where I feel like it just happened and I am mopeing around all day hoping nobody asks me what is the matter because I know I will breakdown.. I know he is in a better place and that God willing we will meet again..but sometimes the wound starts to bleed through the stitches.. I owe who I am and all I am to my father..my big compassionate heart, my love for helping people, my kindness, my being..don't get me wrong I love my mom but I was raised by my dad and we had a strong unbroken bond..lol everyone knew him and his boy..me..

This actually is my favorite in the series. All Dixon wants is respect but he handles it in a better way than Tommy Gunn. Rocky's relationship with both his son and Marie were highlights. Rocky and Marie were handled very well. They didn't cheapen or push Adrian's memory aside, but there was just enough there so that Rocky knew Marie cared and he didn't have to feel as alone as he may have otherwise.

"The Speech" is for sure one of the best moments in the entire series, but I must admit I always get rather teary eyed at the end credits with all thr home movies of people running the steps. Realkt illustrates what an impact that character has had on pop culture. Every artist wishes they could leave such a legacy.

This was the first Rocky movie I saw in theaters, and seeing it an an early screening where I took my brother (Rocky is one of his favorite films) is one of my all-time favorite movie theater experiences. This is my personal favorite in the franchise.

Stallone never felt that "Rocky V" was a satisfying finale for the franchise. "Rocky Balboa" was his way of making amends with the fans and giving Rocky's story a proper conclusion. Of course, he had no idea that Ryan Coogler would come along 8 or 9 years later with a great way to keep the franchise going -- with "Creed."

Stallone had to do ROCKY BALBOA. He had to go the distance. Years ago, I used to frequent the talkbacks at Ain't It Cool News. Somehow Harry got Stallone do to a series of Q&As with us leading up to the release of this movie. It was great. He seemed to really appreciate that everyone still loved him. Hollywood had written him off in a way. At some point during those discussion the original idea that Quentin Tarantino had for a massive WWII movie starring him, Schwarzenegger, etc., came up. QT had abandoned that idea and it turned into the movie that became INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. Not too long after the success of ROCKY BALBOA, and RAMBO, we heard about Stallone making a movie about a group of mercenaries that seemed like what we would have gotten if Tarantino hadn't dropped the original idea he had. That became THE EXPENDABLES. So as a fan it was great to see how a group of "old" action heroes that Hollywood would have deemed "expendable" came back and really brought traditional action movies back. See, if there's one thing Stallone always does, and always tells us to do, it's to "keep punching". I don't know if you follow his Instagram but lately he keeps running into little kids who recognize him and he seems really surprised that they know him. He doesn't take anything for granted. But the Rocky movies are probably the most beloved films the world over and have inspired people for decades and will continue to do so.

You're right about Rocky wanting to find a purpose. When I was younger (I'm 40 now.) My older brother died. Now my brother was adopted by my parents when he was just a few months old because he had Cerebral Palsy. Anyone that know cerebral palsy knows that it can be very mild or it can be sever. I have a friend that has it mildly, it affects her ability to walk, but aside from that, she lives a very normal life. But my brother was on the sever end, he was in a wheelchair, he couldn't talk, he had to have everything done for him. Now my entire life up to that point was centered around helping him. I never resented it, because he was my brother, and I loved him. It didn't matter to me that he was adopted. But he died a few months before his 27th birthday. I ripped my heart out, and for the longest time I didn't know what to do either. It took me a long time to find a purpose in my life again. So I completely agree with you about Rocky wanting even needing to find a purpose. Also I have always said that Rocky is not a smart man, but because of his life experiences, he is a wise man.

Stallone often said that he made this last Rocky movie because he didn't think Rocky V did the story justice to end on that note. I think all fans agreed. This movie is probably the one that most feels like the original.

That's odd.. I never took it that Dixon was scared even though he isn't fleshed out well but as an opponent I always thought that he was easily the most honorable of Rocky's opponents. He didn't take cheap shots and wanted to respect Rocky. He was as said a victim of his own dominance. His journey parallels Rocky's as both are proving themselves.

I agree, I liked the Character of Mason and especially his trainer, who explains that while he's had success, he hadn't yet really been tested, to earn the respect of his critics. He's a kid who's done all the "right" things, yet no one cares about his accomplishments. With the bout against Rocky, he understands that being champion is more than just winning fights, it's about surviving.

The workprint "directors cut" version of Rocky V that used to be on KZbin was a lot better than the theatrical cut. It didn't have that out of place hip hop music the theatrical cut had, it had the Rocky IV training music which fit better when Rocky is training Tommy, there are still clips of the workprint version on KZbin.

There are so many parallels to the first movie. For example while Rocky is not fighting for the title, the champ is not a bad guy, Rocky is given this chance and at first hesitates. The champ, while not being a bad guy, also doesn't take the match very seriously and ends up getting very surprised. Rocky is the underdog and earns peoples respect, including the champ's. I do like the way that Dixon is also doing some soul searching at the same time wondering if he is really being carried/ protected or if he is as good as the fans say. I really do think this was the best way to end Rocky's story. Especially the end of the fight when Dixon say, "You're crazy old man." And Rocky responds, "You'll get there." Also they filmed 2 endings, one with Dixon winning and one with Rocky winning. Stallone said he actually liked the ending with Rocky losing better, not only because it was a reflection of the first movie, but who would seriously believe that Rocky was going to win this match? It's also the same reason they had Dixon break his hand because it would give Rocky a better/move believable chance to make a good match with a young champ.

When filming this, Stallone acknowledged the rather absurd nature of the boxing in the previous films and how a lot of the punches clearly missed by a mile. So he opted for a little more realism this time around, as he and Antonio Tarver were trading real shots at times. Watch that final flurry of punches before the last bell. Those punches are really connecting.

Neat fact The paintings made by Paulie in the film were actually done by Burt Young, himself an avid painter, Mason Dixon is played by real life light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver, In the end credits where everyone is reenacting Rocky's iconic run up the steps, Sylvester Stallone's wife, Jennifer Flavin, is shown doing it as well, According to an interview, the fight scene happened right after an actual boxing event, so people who were there for a pay-per-view match got to see the shooting of the film's climax. It helps that this was Stallone's choice so he can make the fight as realistic as possible by actually taking and giving hits and Adrian Balboa has a real grave in Philly. Credit to TV Tropes.

My second favorite of the series. A real masterpiece. On a side note, during this time a similar series of events were taking place with Randy Couture in the UFC. He came out of retirement and fought for the HW title. Randy dominated all 5 rounds and became the oldest UFC champion in history.

I like Dixon because he isn't a Bad Guy... he is a real guy with his own issues. Both he and Rocky get something from this... they both win. Dixon proves he is a real fighter, and much like ROCKY 1976 - Rocky proves he can still be standing at the end.. even at his age. Love this movie. Just because your down, doesn't mean your out. CREED and CREED II continue to let Rocky shine as he almost turns into "Mickey" - the end of C2 is legendary for ROCKY life.

It wasn’t entirely stallone’s decision, Stallone and talia actually discussed this in great depth, she actually suggested it and Stallone agreed to it and believed that her death would be rockys motivation, class move from her, there was also rumours before this film think it was 5 that Rocky would go out by dying, he changed his mind before the end of the film

The famous speech in this movie is one of the most inspiring bits of movie script writing I've seen. And it hits so much harder knowing that it comes from a place of truth - Stallone's own struggles with living day to day before he found any fame or riches, his career downturn prior to this movie, relationship difficulties with his son Sage in real life at the time, dealing with his other son Seargeoh's autism, and more. It wasn't just a bit of random guff thrown in by a group of writers trying to make the movie more sentimental and you can tell that by the way he delivers the speech with so much power and passion.

My best guess is that Rocky opened it and named it after her... and perhaps even had Adrian as co-owner when it was established in 1995 (five years after the events of Rocky V). Adrian would pass away roughly seven years later on January 11, 2002 in Philadelphia.

The original script had Clubber Lang at the announce table with the HBO guys. Also had Rocky visit a hospital in Vegas where Drago was dying from all the years of steroid abuse. While leaving the hospital Rocky tells the nurse "If he dies, he dies". Glad they decided not to kill Drago in this movie.

This movie, works great as a conclusion to any of the rocky movies and even as a stand alone. Never watched a Rocky movie? You can still identify with Rocky's sense of loss and uncertainty. Seen any of the previous movies? You know how Rocky adored Adrian, and dealing with her loss has him with that stuff inside.

I was amazed at how much better this was than I expected. I hope you like it too. Rocky's positivity and Pauly's negativity are a pretty good balance. Casting real boxers in these last two doesn't hurt. I liked Creed and heard that its sequel is better.

Here's the thing Caped, Dixon WAS like Apollo, the showboat who rarely took anything seriously because he WAS the BEST, and like with Apollo, nobody before Rocky ever pushed Dixon, leading the apathetic no-effort air of him, he was beaten down the only way he could be, emotionally, cause physically no one officially could beat him. It's why Dixon still wins and the crowd FINALLY cheers for HIM. He earned back his mentor's respect because he admitted his fault by inaction. He won Rocky's respect by going the distance, and he won the fans respect by being true to not only himself, not only his opponent, but to the world.

Starting with this movie and going into the Creed films they use actual champion boxers as the antagonists. Stallone said it would be easier to teach a boxer how to act then it would be to teach an actor how to box convincingly. He even decided to take actual punches to make the fight scenes as real as possible.

I'll probably get heat for this but I honestly believe that this is Stallones best acting to date. The rawness, the hurt, the pain, and the loss are written all over his face throughout the movie and you can feel that the world has beaten him down and taken a lot more than it has given. I'm glad this was the end of the Rocky saga and it moved onto Adonis Creed with Rocky being more of a father figure and mentor finding new purpose in life.

There aren't many that pick up on the absolute brilliance of the story here. The ending of this fight is EXACTLY the same as the first Rocky movie. Rocky didn't care what the decision was here (why he left the ring). He just wanted to fight. In Rocky, he didn't necessarily want to win -- he just wanted to go the distance with Apollo. The fight ends in a controversial split decision -- Apollo in Rocky, Mason in Rocky Balboa -- but there's many who feel that Rocky won. The fact that Mason broke his hand in the fight? Those bones are getting older and more brittle. Time is catching up with him, just like it caught up with Rocky. The whole thing was well orchestrated brilliance.

11:08 - Rocky rants about having paid his dues and should get to do what he wants, and you're agreeing with him... because you love the character and want to see him get his way. But *intellectually,* there's no way that commission would have given in. His body had already received a superhuman amount of abuse. "Just one more fight" had the potential to absolutely, 100% kill him or leave him critically disabled. Mind you, I don't *ACTUALLY* care about all of that. Rocky Balboa was a hero for me since I saw the movie in theaters as a kid. This movie was more in line with the original movie than ANY of the sequels. The dialog, the settings, the characters... As one of the previous commenters said, it really was a love letter to the fans.

Side note suggestion: Caped, would love to see a reaction to the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie if you're interested and haven't seen it. No CGI, has Elias Koteas as Casey Jones, Corey Feldman voicing Donatello, Josh Pais as Raphael, and a Sam Rockwell 'cameo' in a small one-liner role before he was famous. Legit good movie.

I saw Rocky 2 first in 1982 when I was 10 yrs old on cable Tv. Was my favorite movie and I watched it many Times. Finally they showed the first one on nbc or something. Then Rocky 3 came out and I got to see a Brand new Rocky movie in the thaetre. Loved it. Lived in the states at the time. Moved home to Norway in 1984 and saw Rocky 4, 5 and 6 in the theatre here as they were released. Been a huge Rocky fan as long as I can remember. Also followed the Rambo series as they were released from the very first one. I like all the Rocky and Rambo movies except for Rocky 5 and Rambo 3. the rest are great.

You were in high school when this came out? Dam I feel old. The funny thing about this movie, before it was announced I was watching boxing reality show called "The Contender." It was ran by Sly and Sugar Ray Leonard. During a beach party on the show, Peter Manfredo Sr. asked Sly when we were going to get another rocky movie. And old Sly replied, "Come on man!! Who am I gonna fight? Arthritis?" Then at the last fight of the season, Sly announced that he had started working on the last Rocky Movie.
