Storyline
The Game is a 1997 American mystery thriller film directed by David Fincher, starring Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger and James Rebhorn and produced by Propaganda Films and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. It tells the story of a wealthy investment banker who is given a mysterious birthday gift by his brother-participation in a game that integrates in strange ways with his everyday life. As the lines between the banker's real life and the game become more uncertain, hints of a larger conspiracy begin to unfold.
The Game was well-received by critics like Roger Ebert and major periodicals like The New York Times, but had middling box-office returns compared to the success of Fincher's previous film Se7en (1995). The film later gained a strong cult following among Fincher's fans with some noting it as one of his most underrated films

David Fincher's "The Game" remains an underappreciated and highly misunderstood masterpiece. A lot of people who watch this movie get hung up on how improbable its events are, but while they're pointlessly counting "cinema sins", they're completely missing the brilliance of the film. The entire point of "the game" is to strip Nicholas of the wealth and position that were socially isolating him. He needed to be left, a broken husk of a man in a foreign country, to force him to give up his father's watch and the emotional burden it represents. The game isn't just a plot device. It's about having humanity and excitement re-injected into a miserable prick's life. It's an intervention. A total rebirth. It's like a modern version of A Christmas Carol, but with the holiday setting discarded. Nicholas Van Orton stands in as our 1990's Ebeneezer Scrooge and Michael Douglas absolutely nails the role.

I definitely got the scrooge vibe. May have mentioned that in the reaction 🤔 I think you just have to go with this movie and I didn't mind doing so. I think that fact that it's made so well really helps.

@@RyanCarrington Yeah, I think you said something to that effect. When I want to support a video and boost you in the algorithm, I typically just copy and paste my mini review of the movie. So we had similar thoughts. Great minds think alike, as they say! I'm a huge fan of Fincher's early work. Seven, The Game and Fight Club are all amazing films. Maybe the best start to a directing career ever? But after those three, he falls off in a big way, for me. None of his post 2000 films that I've seen measure up to those original three gems.

it's definetly a movie where if stop to think about it for 5 minutes nothing makes sense and too many conincidences and such to work...but you don't care because the multiple twists at the end was so brilliantly done.

Some fun facts about this film: 1. Originally, Conrad was written as a woman and David Fincher wanted Jodie Foster to play the role. Unfortunately, due to a lawsuit with Polygram Films that she had, she wasn't able to play the role and the character was reworked. It was offered to Jeff Bridges after the reworking, but after he declined, Sean Penn was casted for the role. However, Fincher ended up working with Foster on another film: Panic Room (2000). 2. You mentioned having seeing Fight Club. This one happens to be a crossover between the two. For the scene outside the bar where Tyler asks the Narrator to "hit me as hard as you can", the station wagon the narrator falls back into when Tyler hits him is a station wagon the Narrator falls against. The station wagon used by Jim in the last act of this film and turned up in Fight Club, and quite by accident. Fincher needed a car for the scene and the transportation company rented out the station wagon to them. When Fincher got on set, he noticed the station wagon and started to have a feeling of deja vu. And it wasn't until he noticed that the CRS sticker on the window of the car that he realized it had been the same one from The Game. 3. Among the tests that Nicholas is asked to take when he interviews at CRS is the MMPI. This is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory which is one of the most commonly used personality tests in mental health. The test is used by trained professionals to assist in identifying personality structure and psychopathology. 4. When at CRS the interviewer turns on a computer which makes the same noise as the Weyland computers from the Alien franchise. Director David Fincher was the director of Alien 3 (which he directed before he did Se7en). 5. Deborah Kara Unger fractured a bone in her foot and jumped into a dumpster infested with real rats while working on this film.

I watched this in the theater when it was released. Back then, we weren't so exposed to elaborate mind-game movies, like "Inception" and "The Prestige". Nolan and Fincher redefined the genre. I remember exiting the theater and feeling completely paranoid.

going to throw out a random recommendation - NEAR DARK which is a 1987 film directed by KATHRYN BIGELOW and stars both LANCE HENRIKSEN and BILL PAXTON evidently they were travelling together in a convertible off camera both in character (method acting) when they were pulled over for speeding and the cop reacted to LANCE by 1st reaching for his gun and then letting them go without a ticket

This film is just *sick*! It gives you little pieces of information, shifts the meaning, gives you plausible alternative explanations, and keeps you guessing on what's really going on the whole time. I still have to wonder how differently it would've gone, had he helped out that guy in the bathroom.

I watched this with my dad the first time. It has stuck with me ever since . I have seen it over 25 times, including a scant few reaction versions- this is by far the greatest reaction I’ve seen. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times. Great job my man. New sub.

I think this is hands down Fincher's best movie. It's not technically superior to stuff like Seven or Gone Girl, but it's his most re watchable. I just rewatched it again this past weekend for the hundredth time and it never gets old.

You know, Michael Douglas can pull off action and comedy, too. One of his most famous movies was Romancing the Stone. It's an Indiana Jones style adventure and he really pulls it off. It's a lot of fun, too. Great movie.

The irony is the tone of the film with the two men in the member's club envious they couldn't go through it again and don't spoil it for him. First time I watched this I was hooked. Guessed most of it right the first time I watched it apart from one bit, great film, and you can't forget and rewatch. 🙂

In High School I had a Dean named Mrs. Butts. She hated me with all her heart. I was a juvenile delinquent of sorts. Skipping school for weeks at a time. I wished evil upon her, and then later I heard she had a bad stroke and needed to walk using a cane, this was shortly after I left school. I always wondered if that curse of mine had worked on her, and then I kind of felt guilty about wishing evil upon her.

Wow such a great movie I did not know you reacted to it . This movie is truly one of the best movies I ever saw . It is a unique experience to watch this movie for the first time which you can not recreate. Other great underrated Michael Douglas movies are Don't Say A Word 2001 and A Perfect Murder 1998 and Disclosure.

The main issue I see with this kind of movie assuming it would happen in real life & it's probable that something like this could happen one day is that everyone can plan for every scenario & analyse every detail in the planning of the game but one thing the company is not in control of is the actual client. He or she's actions are unpredictable . Sure the client can be given clues & props to guide them through the game like in this movie but carnt really guarantee the outcome of what they want or expect the client to do as well as ensuring their safety. Sure with the taxi drive arrangements would have been made for that street to be cleared of other cars & people like on a film set that is something the company can be in control off. Take the gun Michael Douglas has he could have got hold of a gun with real bullets at the end & really shot his brother I mean it's possible. As for the fall of the building I know it was all set up but for someone whom is not a stuntman the client could have been seriously hurt from a fall like that. Anyway that is my take on it. No I'm not opposed to this idea it could work in reality despite the many implications & complications involved. Great reaction & yeah I wish I could watch it all over again for the first time too.

A bit random, but I remember this movie game out about the same time as "LA Confidential" and "The Edge", and I remember liking all three of them. If you haven't seen the others, particularly "LA Confidential", I would. I actually probably haven't seen "The Edge" again since then, so don't know how well it's held up, but, I mean, It's Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. Probably the lesser of the three, but how bad could it be?

Great, underestimated film. Lesson on how to embrace life. A selfish, wealthy man getting learned up. Greed...Loss of control. To make him become a better person and come to terms with his fathers death. Ooooo, what the wealthy can do to teach a lesson. Money is a tool. Used properly it makes something beautiful; used wrong, it makes a horrorifing mess!” It gives some the false sense of privilege that u can go as far as u'd like, which is the scary part, for me. The movie is brilliantly executed and keeps you at the edge of your seat until the end. I just always had problems with the plot. Not a fan of this "everything was completely planned, the complete environment is under total control, every move is predicted correctly, and they where prepared for all eventualities". That's totally OK as a premiss in a "don't takes itself too serious"-heist-movie like Oceans 11 IMHO, but in a serious thriller/drama, it feels a little off for me.
