@@thereisnopandemic You obviously aren't Sicilian. Carlo richly deserved that end. Sonny introduced him to his sister, and he beat the crap out of her while she was pregnant with his own child----all to set up Sonny to be murdered. As for the other assorted shit stains, they were in this business and all conspired against the Corleone family. Barzini plotted the murder of Michael in Sicily and murdered his innocent wife Apolonia--they got what was coming to them. That is Justice

Hey, I can accept that maybe her wanting Sonny to outright kill him in the street after the first time might have been a bit overzealous, but the second we then see Carlo undo his belt to use on his VISIBLY PREGNANT wife, every patron in every movie theater in America instantly knew that they needed to see this character die or they would not be leaving the theater satisfied.

If you watch the scene in the restaurant just after Michael comes back from the bathroom, cover his eyes and watch the scene, you can't tell anything that is happening. It's the way he looks around that tells you he is deciding to kill them, the way he looks as the sound of the train goes up and the sound of the voices gets quieter, you can see in his eyes that he goes from what he is thinking about doing to realizing what he is will do. It's just a small example of what the director focuses on, what the actor is doing and why the scene is shot that way that gives you so much information from so little dialogue and movement.

There are no subtitles in the Salozzo assassination scene. It wasn't your machine. The director decided they weren't needed. Still, one of the most intense scenes not only in this film but in all of cinematic history.

A wise decision, it let the audience feel as detached from Salozzo's words as Michael was. He wasn't there to listen to the drug dealer's words. He was there to kill him and the police captain.

I was just going to say this lol. If you watch just that scene, you’ll note that the environment shifts around based on Michael’s “transformation”. It’s hard to explain, but the lack of subtitles, the subtle drop in the volume of the speaking voices, the loud train just before; all are intended to show how tense Michael is AND to show the audience that he decided to follow through with the plan. It’s a brilliant piece of cinema directing in my opinion.

I think you might have missed the part that killing all 5 mafia heads was Vito's plan. The exact word he gave, when he made the truce was - I will not be the one to break the peace we made today. His plan was that Michael would be the one to do it. He knew Barzini killed his son and attacked him with the Turk, there is no way they could overlook that. Sooner or later they would try again. Carlo was beating Connie for a while, much longer than the movie shows. After Sonny beats the ever loving shit out of him, Barzini approaches Carlo to deliberately beat up Connie in order to draw Sonny out. His temper was well-known, and Barzini used it to his own advantage. So Carlo was directly involved in Sonny's murder, but Connie was kept in the dark about it all. Aside from his cheating and the beatings, she had no idea he was also a traitor to the whole family. FUN FACT: It's not pointed out in this film, but it was Sonny who introduced Carlo to Connie prior to the events of this movie.

Michael did have feelings for Kay but something died in his soul with the death of Apollonia (who, from the book, was pregnant). Michael was a serious guy and had no time to fool around like Sonny or Fredo, he knew he was destined to be the Don of the family so he needed to have a family: wife and children. Because family is an important thing to have, and so Michael went for Plan B and got back to Kay. of course, there's no romanticism in the scene where he asks Kay for marriage but because it's basically a sort of 'business offer' from the way he handles it... he needs her and they have a history together and it's not as if Kay was already dating someone, she also came from a conservative family and didn't want to be a spinster. You've got to consider the mentalities of the time. Yes, by today's standards, Michael comes across as a hypocritical guy but no, he's not addicted to marriage. Marriage was a must in his culture and he didn't have time to lose looking for a perfect wife...it was a practical move.
@BlackFlightNY
@BlackFlightNY Жыл бұрын
Also if u remember the whole reason he got with Kay (an AMERICAN woman) was to “rebel” against his father, because he was young n wild and whatnot. But Apollonia represented to him the fulfillment of his FATHERS wishes (a “good Italian woman”) who, despite her also having an independent spirit like Kay, she would likely submit and obey him when the time came…then SHE gets killed🙄😒

The book is very good and fills in a lot of gaps (and adds more sub plots). The biggest hole first: Don Vito promises at the Dons' meeting that he would forego vengeance, he did not promise that Michael would also forego vengeance. Hence, Don Michael, once he has become head of the family was not constrained by the promise. This is also why Tom Hagen cannot be consigliari--he was part of the promise. The end involves the killing of all the heads of the five families. In the book, this was also Sonny's plan, but because it was "wartime" he could not get to them. In the book, Mo Green is killed earlier for no other reason than being dis-respectful to the family and being in the way of the move to Las Vegas. Fabrizio, who killed Apallonea, is also found and killed at the same time as the heads of the five families (i.e. part of the vengeance for what happened). The violent end of the five families is cemented by the betrayal of many of the rest of the family's top men, who switch sides quickly. Don Vito and Don Michael planned it all very well. Concerning women: Michael falls in love at first sight with A., but it has been some time since he left home (six months?). His face was permanently damaged by McCluskey, and was still that way when he proposed to Kay two years later. However, Kay talked him into having corrective surgery. Concerning "civilians": female family members were not to be touched in a gang war, as the book describes it because all the families were too vulnerable to such attacks. Michael is a civilian and is never in any real danger until after he kills Sollazzo and McCluskey. Michael's life during the meeting was protected by a hostage (great subplot there), while Sollazzo's was supposed to be protected by McCluskey's presence--i.e. you cannot kill a police captain without the police shutting down all business until the killer is produced. Concerning women: Don Vito and his wife know about Carlo beating his wife. But they are old school Sicilians and won't interfere. Sonny is first generation American and interferes, which makes him vulnerable to Carlo and Barzini's set up. The book's ending is a bit different; however, I won't spoil it here. Finally, I have to say that while many people like The Godfather II better than the first, I found the second to be tedious and repetitive. Everything said in part II worth saying had already been said in part I. In my opinion.

Thank you for this reaction! I love these movies, and it's rare for me to find someone who has not seen it. It's fun to see other people appreciate these like I once did. 1:10: "What are they doing?" Correct, making sure they were not being followed. 1:50: On my DVD the subtitles for this scene are in Italian. You can google this for a translation. 2:55: "What is he waiting for?" Michael noticed that every once in a while a train went by and made it noisier. He was waiting for the next train to come to make the gun shot less obvious to anyone outside. 3:30: "For a second I didn't think he was going to do it." Me too, the first time I saw it! 8:45: When Michael told the dad he wanted to meet his daughter, he did it in an extremely respectful matter, which was consistent with that era. Michael also hinted he was an important person, so these two things made it an easy decision for the father. I don't know if you caught this, but they mentioned that many of the men of Corleone had died from violence so there probably weren't a lot of options for her anyway. 9:00: "Why is Michael marrying?" Since he had decided to get into the family business, his first choice would be to have an Italian wife. 9:20: "How long has it been?" I believe by this point it had been several months, maybe closer to a year. 11:00: Another scene the Simpsons spoofed. (Season 14, Episode 9) 21:25: Regarding Kay... . Clearly Michael does not feel the same way about her as he did the girl in Italy, but as heir to the head of the family he needs a wife so he can have children to eventually help in the family business. 22:15: Correct. Old Don retired, Michael took charge. The movie did not mention this, but by this point several years had passed (Maybe like 5?) 30:45: "How did they know?" The Barzini people had approached Carlo, and Carlo decided to help them, because he was frustrated that the Corleones were not including him in their inner circle. Carlo knew that beating Connie again would get Sonny out of the house and expose him, so they set the trap at the toll booth, where they knew Sonny would have to pass. What's even more ruthless about Michael, was that rather than just kill Carlo, he allowed him to think that Michael was making him a more important person in the family, to gain his trust, and that made Carlo feel safe enough to give up the family who had approached him and really killed Sonny.

I was her age when I first saw this movie, on TV, the second time ever since it was shown in theaters. The difference between our reactions is that I felt no compassion for any of the characters, except for perhaps Connie. My background: I grew up next door to the Connie Corleone, the sister of my hometown head mafia family. Her daughter was our babysitter. Her two brothers were killed in succession during the time we lived there. We heard and saw up close the reality of what this movie portrays very well. We weren't raised to sympathize, or emulate those who chose a life of crime. My first reaction was one of icy chill, yet stunned by how well this story was told. My dad warned my brother and me never to get involved with that life, and we did not. He said it would bring disgrace on our family. The Godfather was a great movie, but the down side was that many young men saw a romantic side to crime, and that was a shame because gangsters either wind up dead or in jail. Furthermore, As far as Solozzo having people staking out the restaurant, that wouldn't work because it was part of the negotiation that it be only Mike, McCluskey and Solozzo. No one else was to know where it was to take place.Remember, Tom says even Solozzo's people didn't know where it was. And, even if Solozzo did plant people there, so could the Corleone people, since they also knew where it was to take place. As always, I find your observations fascinating. There were never subtitles provided for the conversation in Italian between Michael and Solazzo in the restaurant, not even in the original theatrical release of the film. I think the point is that we don't need to know what they're saying, because it actually doesn't matter. The very formal first-courtship scene between Michael and Apollonia is simply the way things were handled in Sicily at that time. You asked what Michael was thinking, getting married to Apollonia. This was Michael's last chance to have a normal life, to have human feelings, to be a man instead of becoming a monster. At some level he understands this, and grasps at marriage to Apollonia as an escape. When she dies, his fate is sealed. As you probably understood, Michael ultimately becomes a more ruthless, cold-blooded killer than his father ever was.

In a scene you can find on youtube, that was deleted, Micharl asked his father about retribution for "Sicily" meaning the murder of his wife and he asked about paying back those who betrayed the family. His father said that he agreed to a peace and cant break his word. Michael then said that his father agreed but he himself never agreed. The Godfather seemed pleased that Michael would pay them back.

Also, "Godfather" is not a mafia title. Vito Corleone was godfather to a bunch of people, so those people- or those closely associated, call him "godfather" as a term of affection. Michael then becomes godfather to Connie's child - again, not a mafia title, just... an ordinary ol godfather. The connection between the two godfathers is symbolic, if you want, because the title of "Don" *is* passed from one Don Corleone (Vito) to the next Don Corleone (Michael) It's as if the movie'd be titled "The Don" instead, but "The Godfather" has a more poetic, symbolic vibe.

@30:51 _How did they know?_ It was obvious. Carlo knew how hot-headed Santino was, & that if he beat his wife again Santino would explode in rage & that's exactly what happened. Sonny was too fired-up to wait for his body guards. Carlo made the plan together with Barzini's hitmen, who set the ambush knowing Santino is too hot-headed to wait for his protection.

People always miss one of the quintessential parts of the movie when Michael and Enzo are at the hospital bluffing the hired guns coming to kill Vito. Enzo was so nervous, he couldn't even light his cigarette lighter, while Michael never waivered. Notice, after lighting Enzo's cigarette for him, he takes a look at his hands and they are steady. That's the point Michael really becomes the future Don. He realizes he is capable of doing what is needed to get the job done. Now, had Sonny lived, he would've been Don, so fate intervenes to make sure Michael satisfies his destiny. This is an incredibly deep movie. It is as close to true Shakespeare as any thing since Shakespeare himself. It must be watched multiple times, and you need to read the book. Also, I'm glad you commented on the shot with the Statue of Liberty in the background when they shoot Paulie. It is one of the most brilliant shot in movie history and is accompanied by one of the most quoted lines in all of movie history..."Leave the gun...take the cannoli", which was improvised, btw, by the actor playing Clemenza, Richard Costellano.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you. I think from the very beginning when he was introducing Kay to the family and he casually told her about brains or signature on the paper. That shows that killing was already normal in his mind.
@gawainethefirst
@gawainethefirst Жыл бұрын
I think what’s even more people in this is that everybody, including his brothers, counted Michael out because initially he was not part of the Corleone “family business.” What they are missed, was that as a Marine Corps Captain who started off World War II as an enlisted man. That means that Michael had already made his bones on some island in the South Pacific, and not from a mile away with a rifle, but close enough to where he could smell the stale sake on his opponents breath.
@genekent2391
@genekent2391 Жыл бұрын
@@jckdnls9292 I don't disagree. Killing was normal to him...remember, he had been in the military and saw action in WW2, so killing wasn't an issue. I think when he looked at his hand and the lighter, he was surprised at how calm he remained in a life and death situation. I think he realized at that point, "Hey, I can do this!" I do think when he first mentions the family going legit to Kay at the wedding, he means it, but of course, at that point, Sonny was next in line to be Don. You see, Michael didn't feel the pressure of protecting the family no matter what at that point, because he knew Sonny would take over. Now, outside the hospital, Don Vito's death is very possible, and he realizes when he sees the lighter, that he could do what ever he needed to do to protect the family at all costs. I think the first, real thoughts of being a real, contributing member of the family, and possibly even Don, entered his mind at the exact moment he saw that his hand wasn't shaking when he lit the lighter to light Enzo's cigarette. He had already made a commitment to his father in the hospital, so when he saw how he handled the situation, he realized he wasn't just talking...he could do it and be as good or even better than his father, which can be debated as to who the best Don was through the 3 movies.

@@jckdnls9292 Michael was surrounded by the family and was clearly accustomed to the fact that killing was going on, but he does tell Kay "that's my family, it's not me", and up until his father is shot he is never around or involved with the "business" side of things, and shows no signs that he wants to be. Outside of the hospital with Enzo I think the mental shift, when he looks down at his steady hands, is going from, "it's my family, it's not me" to "...maybe it *is* me", he'd never let himself get involved with that side of it and suddenly, when motivated by protecting his father, he knew what to do, it came naturally, and he finally wanted to get involved.
@genekent2391
@genekent2391 Жыл бұрын
@@jckdnls9292 Let me add, killing an enemy soldier is much different than killing someone on the street. Of course, Michael could kill a German soldier running over a hill to kill him, but he could not be sure about civilians in a situation he originally didn't even want to be in. He joined the army willingly, but originally hated the idea of being in the family business. Now, after looking at his hand and the lighter, he realizes the situation doesn't matter...that he can handle it no matter what it was. I believe the switch was flipped right at that moment, not on his ability to kill or the normality of killing, but of what he realized he was capable of in general. Man, a book bigger than the original novel could be written just on The Godfather and what it all meant. lol

1) Ironies - It is quite ironic that both Don vito and Bonasera (the Undertaker) came to each other with the same problem (their child had been killed/injured). It's also ironic that, after Michael tells Kay about Johnnie Fontaine's issue with the band leader and getting out of his contract, that, in the end, he signs Johnnie to a performing contract of his own (albeit a less restrictive one). 2) Of course, Johnnie Fontaine was based on Frank Sinatra. It is implied that Jack Woltz is Jewish (since he refers to Tom Hagen as "my Kraut/Mick friend"), which could align with Jack Warner of the "Warner Bros" and Sinatra's eventual role in "From Here to Eternity." 3) Of course, the horse's head was donated by a dog food company where the horse was scheduled to be euthanized anyway. But they had to paint in the white marking on the snout to make it look more like the horse in the stable. 4) Don Vito was totally lucky to have survived the shooting. Given the number of wounds and their locations, it's unlikely he would have, in real life. Emergency Surgery was not as well developed in the mid 40's. It was in the 50's during the Korean conflict that techniques to preserve life from such trauma were utilized (i.e. M*A*S*H units). And it certainly doesn't help that Fredo broke down crying rather than getting EMS there pronto. 5) "Leave the gun. Take the Cannoli." - The original line was only "Leave the gun." Richard S. Castelano (Clemenza) improvised the "Take the Cannoli" part. 6) Clemenza's Spaghetti Sauce - There have been several competitions on the best way to cook Clemena's Spaghetti/Meat ball / sausage sauce. 7) "Va Fangool" (when Connie and Carlo are fighting). It is an Italian Curse. It's used basically as "F*** YOU!" But it translates more literally as "up yours." The word "culo" is similar in several "Romance" languages (Spanish & Italian - In French it's "cul" (pronounced "Kewl")). It means "a$$/derriere." Italian words with a hard "c" are often pronounced as a hard "g" and often drop the ending vowels (eg. Ricotta cheese = "Rigot," or the Italian pork cut "Capicola" is pronounced "gabagol" as you heard Willi Cicci say in the Godfather wedding scene when he tossed the sandwiches). Hence, the word "culo" would be pronounced "gool." The full phrase is "Va' a fare in culo..." or "Go do it in the a$$." Hence, "Va Fa'ngool" = "up Yours.") 8) The "Baptism" scene - The infant being baptized in that scene is, actually, Francis Ford Coppola's youngest daughter, "Sofia Coppola." Coppola's wife (Sofia's mom), the late Eleanor (as of 2024) was very concerned that Diane Keaton was not holding her properly. Sofia went on to have a cameo role in Godfather II, playing a young child on the boat as young Vito traveled to the USA. Of course, finally, she played "Mary Corleone" in Godfather III.

Like others, I have to compliment you on your reaction; how you take enough time to do justice to the movie. Your reactions are strong and interesting, not weak and obvious. For instance, I am very familiar with the movie and have watched many other reactions, but until you mentioned it, I missed the symbolism that as his nephew was being baptized, the string of killings of the other heads of the families "baptized" Michael as Don Corleone. I'm sure the guys who made the movie did that on purpose. Well done.

"This is going to make everything worse, isn't it?" No, it made everything better. All of Michael's obvious enemies and potential enemies are gone and now he's the unquestioned head of the Five Families in NYC and Las Vegas. He is boss of bosses. It's evil, but too often in life, evil wins. Of course, for more on all this, see THE GODFATHER II. The story of how the film was made is fascinating, by the way, and there are numerous books, documentaries, and KZbin videos about it, including a recent 10-part semi-fictionalized docudrama. The guy who played Luca Brasi was a genuine Mafia button man, which is why Coppola filmed him rehearsing so awkwardly; that was the best acting he could manage. The studio resisted casting both Al Pacino and Marlon Brando like crazy. And wanted the picture shorter than an hour. And they felt the opening was lit too dark. And had a thousand other dumb objections and requests.

Incidentally, notice the play of emotions and thoughts across Michael's face after he leaves the restaurant bathroom and sits down at the table before he eventually pulls the gun. It's clear he's thinking through all the ramifications once again, and perhaps arguing with himself a bit, or at least clarifying, before he decides to, um, bite the bullet. It's amazing acting.

@@NoHandleGrr “thinking through” or “mind is racing”. Or a bit of both. At any rate, you’re right. His face and eyes are conveying a LOT. There is a lot of “facework” in this movie. Sollozo’s smile when he says, “let me worry about Luca Brasi”, and then the sideways glance to see if Tom noticed him smiling. Don Vito’s face at the funeral parlor. None of it is overly broad, but neither is it too subtle to miss. It’s perfection.

Wow, i had no idea about Luca Brasi hahahaha. That's hilarious, thanks for sharing that and the other facts. Regarding Michael killing the heads of the rest of the families, I don't know much about Mafia but i do think it's a little naive to think that absolutely none of the remaining family members (or the ones to come) will take revenge or plan to do something against them at any point. I do believe it's a flaw in the writing, there's simply too many people involved. People don't take criticism very well but hey, all i can do is be honest 🤷‍♀

Michaels check was broken and it didn't heal correctly. That's why is still swollen and black and blue many months later. It needed surgery but they couldn't risk it. To have surgery you have to make appointments and get put under. Anyone wanting to kill Michael would know exactly were he is and be waiting for him. Or just pay someone to change the medication so he dies and it looks like a complication. Michael is in Sicily about a year or so. Just to keep the time-line straight.

After multiple rewatches of The Godfather, I think I know why Michael is so marry-happy; he's desperately trying to swim back from having shot two dudes back in New York - "That's my family, not me." so as soon as he sets foot in Cicily, he can immediately pretend-live the life of an Italian farmer, married lad, not a mafia-man at all - and as soon as he comes home, he knows where he can get his wifey-back, and runs straight to her "Hello, I am husband man, not mafia man, let's marriage immediately!" but he's already way in, and getting drawn deeper (and again dragging a wife with him)

The scene at the end cutting between the baptism and Michael's killing the heads of the five families is brilliant. It shows how the Mafia covers itself with all the rituals of family and religion. It also shows Michael's two roles as a godfather: as Mafia head, and as godfather to his nephew; in Catholicism a godparent is charged with guiding his godchild onto the right spiritual path. We can see that Michael is very skilled in one but not the other.

The Issue with Michaels face while is in hiding is that when the Captain of the police hit him, it not only broke his jaw and his cheekbone but because of how soon he killed both Sallozzo and the captain they healed up crooked and when he talks or moves it breaks the tiny blood vessels in his face that leaves him with permanent bruises a slur and a constant runny nose on his face, he came back to America afterwards and had it fixed with plastic surgery the issues with his face.
