About the “why didn’t the parents tell her???” That’s a real thing that happens too! My mom’s mom never explained puberty to her so when she first got her period she panicked super hard thinking she was dying. It’s a sad truth that some parents hurt their kids because they’re too afraid to talk about certain things to the point where totally normal events in their life turn traumatic.

"How can you not prepare her for this??" Had a classmate who didn't return to class after recess so the teacher sent a couple of girls to the bathroom to see if she was okay. We found her in one of the stalls desperately dabbing herself with toilet paper and crying because she thought she had serious internal bleeding. She was 12 and had no idea what menstruation was. That was back in the 90s but you'd be surprised how many folks still don't prepare their young girls for this and it's so frustrating because this is kinda inevitable. Not talking about menstruation does not prevent menstruation; it just leaves a young girl confused and scared.

I'm South African and in my last year of high school I had to help one of the younger girls get to the hospital after she passed out in the bathrooms. My cousin, a nurse, later told me that she'd been going into toxic shock because she'd been plugging herself up with tp because she was scared her parents would punish her. The most surprising part was that she was a white girl. Most of us thought white people were better with things like this but human experiences are universal ig.

This movie explains puberty for females soooo well. Its so creative to choose a panda as a code for periods/puberty. You get hairy (like a panda) , you bleed (red). you have mood swings like anger (like an animal), your sweat smells different (smelly like a panda), its just so creative well done pixar and you guys are great, keep up the good work :)

This movie got caught between over-controlling parents being mad because they thought the movie encouraged their kids to disrespect their parents, some grown people being weird about kids possibly learning what a period is, and this one dude’s review about how he couldn’t relate to the movie because he said it looked like the movie was made just for the director and her friends. That was basically all of the online drama, which was all very silly. It’s a really great and fun movie.

Mei Mei's embarrassment regarding her own feelings is largely attached to the societal expectations of young girls. When you think of puberty for boys most people think "horny teens" whereas for girls it's usually "emotional/moody" etc. I feel like that's also why this movie didn't do well. Adults do NOT like to think of young girls thinking/having sexual feelings or thoughts. Even H-man (?) was like "I understand the Mom when she finds the drawings." Mei's behavior is normal - people just have a hard time accepting female sexuality because they want girls to be sweet, proper and "innocent." As this entire movie is Mei (and her friends) growing up and having hormonal reactions (including attraction) a lot of people didn't want their kids to watch it.
@snakesonaframe2668

I think the mom thought she might have been being groomed. It’s reasonable to be concerned, but all that required was some questions to confirm it’s innocent. She handled that situation awfully.

From what I've seen, the movie got some backlash when it came out for three main reasons. The first is people were upset about how the film talks about puberty, particularly the scene in the bathroom early on. Basically puritans and conservatives who think it's a tabboo subject that shouldn't be discussed openly, and the types of parents who'd prefer to raise their kids never telling them the things they need to know because it's "too awkward". The second reason I saw was people hated that Mei "needed the panda to be happy", which is bullshit because she was already happy to begin with. It also completely misses the point of her decision to keep it - she didn't GET the panda, she refused to give it up. The panda was always part of her, like an innate talent for music or art, and rather than shutting it away like some might do, she embraced it. The third was parents unhappy that Mei stood up to authority and rebelled against her mother without being punished. This one speaks for itself - insecure parents whose children I worry for.

What I love about this movie is that the relationship between Mei and her mom is good but it’s flawed. I love that it’s not that her mom is an abuser or an absolutely horrible mother- it’s just that her experiences with her own mother and her overbearing parenting style has caused the cracks to show in their relationship but they do love each other. It’s natural for as kids to get older for relationships between children and their parents to change and need some adjusting- and it showed that even when things get messy sometimes that helps bring the family to a healthier place ❤❤

My mother used to pay kids at my school to report to her on what I did at school. She also was banned from school grounds for fighting with the security guard. I was also banned from interacting with kids seemed "weird" (like anime, listened to metal, etc). These were the more tame versions of that in this movie. One of the many things I love about this movie is that even though it's about a teenage girl who's very boy crazy and feels infatuated with different boys throughout the movie, it doesn't become the main focus. Like, it doesn't suddenly turn into a teen love story. Instead it's more about a girl feeling torn between two different worlds, her family and friends, and struggling to honor her family while being true to herself. It makes for a great story and adding a love interest would've been unnecessary

I remember them flying over the audience on futuristic board things during Larger Than Life and I was screaming entirely too much while holding my sign that could not hold on to all the glitter I had dumped on it😂 Watched this movie with my sons (ages 5 and 9 at the time of viewing) and while it is not their favorite Pixar film, they both really loved it and even my 5 year old was able draw comparisons between myself and the ladies in the film with hormones and periods and the like (I am a very open parent with them and we have casual but clinical body talks sometimes as a means to try and normalize these things). My now 10 year old is on the cusp of those big body changes and this film was a great portal into having those conversations

this movie was beautifully done representation and portrayal of puberty for girls as well as generational trauma. it was so relatable for a lot of people, particularly poc (though generational trauma certainly exits for some caucasian families, it's more common with poc families due to their unique struggles), many mentioned how they and their parents came out of the theater crying, and for some it helped them to better connect with and understand their parents/children. :) it's a very fun movie for one with such deep and meaningful undertones, and it definitely deserves its award nominations!

I wonder if you have been mixing up the red panda with the tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog). They're different animals. The giant round table with the Lazy Susan in the middle is a favored table in many Asian households. One reason you might have missed it it’s because it’s a Disney Pixar film but it came out straight to Disney Plus. Which is a shame it could have been a theater hit. Also Ruff is not wrong about the parent circle and the negative comments. Lots of conservative parents complained saying the movie is too inappropriate for kids to and that it’s about rebellion and not listening to your parents. Pretty dumb reasons. But I work with elementary and preschool kids. They all love this film. And I played the 4town songs for them for a couple of months. They were so into it and loved everything about the film.

As a past kid who grew up with split-up parents, strict parenting seems very wrong to me. I had one strict parent and one laid-back. Laid back but involved, kinda like how the blond girl's parents comes across in this movie. I was trying to be perfect for the strict one, but I was scared of them and honestly am still quite wary as an adult. I never know what is good enough for them and what will make them annoyed. While my other parent I trust and open up to. I'm not as scared to make mistakes either so I feel comfortable and like hanging out with them. I remember getting whiplash moving back and forth between the homes. The rules and expectations would change so much. I would accidentally break rules with the strict one, and walk around on imaginary eggshells with the laidback one. I definitely hid my period from the strict one lol I failed, of course, it's hard to hide bloody clothes. But I was just too scared to tell them. I was a little under 13 in 2002 and grew up less than an hour away from Toronto, with a somewhat controlling, high expectations family, it's pretty on point. On the note of being a Canadian I find it so funny every time some one jokes about Canada not being real and is confused by our loonies and toonies

I deadass watched this movie the other day and honestly. The music bangs “4-Town”. Is basically the representation of bts (don’t hate me for that comparison just my opinion). But Fr tho. Had this happen to one of my sisters but she was told about her time of the month but when it came she got scared and so my other sister had to explain it to her again and she relaxed because she thought she was dying and honestly that’s messed up lowkey. The movie really captures every change and emotion it’s so good. Like the saying goes “Haters Gon’ Hate.” But this movie is great not good but great. So yeah all good. Love the reaction to this movie.

I love this movie so much. Thankfully my mom prepared me for my period before I got it, but I know so many women whose parents didn’t. (My mom’s didn’t, and she thought she was dying, which is why she made sure I knew what would happen.) and I’ve never seen a movie capture that “fangirling” feeling. It’s such a good movie for young women.

Great movie! I fit none of the demographics that the movie is directly aimed at but I still appreciated it. One note: racoon dogs (called tanuki in Japan, featured in the Studio Ghibli movie "Pom Poko") are a different species than red pandas. Though they are probably more closely related to each other than either is to a panda. And both are relatively small.

haha honestly I feel the mermaid sketch or riding on the unicorn would make me confident this was just fantasy doodling... and honestly that's the LEAST a parent would have to worry about seeing. haha I feel when your kid hits there teen years, the Knock before you enter thing is reallly for YOUR sake as much as theirs T___T

The creators stated that Mei drew them as Mermen because she's so innocent and sheltered she can't think of what else to draw on a nude lower-half, but that IS what she was thinking of.

Great reaction guys, also when it comes to the size your panda is, it's not connected to your feelings or how big your feelings are, it's pretty random, like with regular people you got some that are born 5'5 and they're family is usually 6'3, it's the same case in this but, on a drastic scale in the moms case, as far as I know, she's the only one in her family lineage that has ever grown that large

I loved this movie so much. As a young Chinese girl with… I wouldn’t say controlling but a very protective and at times micromanaging mother I felt so seen. I ugly cry every time I see the scene with Mei and her mother at the portal thingy. I also cry whenever Mei looks in the mirror and says “This won’t happen again” for having romantic emotions. I relate to that. 😢 This movie was cringe as hell but it made me laugh so hard. Forever one of my favs

Awww yiss, I watch all reactions to this film ❤️ Edit: yes it is a Thundercats reference. There are quite a few nods to popular shows in the movie. Also, the negative feedback was because it was about "puberty", it was dumb. So yeaaah. Hope you guys saw the post credits scene

This movie was totally aimed at older Millennials who were young teens in 2000 and have kids just now in middle school. I'm 70 years old, but my daughter was a young teen at that time, so I'm aware of what was going on with her then. I adore this movie.

Hey Nani no Anime! I just recently discovered your channel and have been loving you guy’s reactions! I don’t know if there’s a way to request reactions but could you react to RWBY? I think you guys would really like it. It’s an American style anime created by Rooster Teeth. If you do I suggest watching the trailers first then start on volume 1 if you like it. Also to note if you do run into a copyright issue with the video you can appeal it and the creators will approve of it asap. They love people reacting to it.

This movie just brings back the memories of when I got my period at age 13. I was lucky because it started at home and my mom had already explained it all to me well in advance so I was prepared. Didn’t have the right pads so I had to wait for my mom to get home and take me to the store for proper pads. My periods have always been on the heavier side (sometimes not even Advil can help with the cramps) but I’ve never thought that anything could be wrong. It’s always manageable tho so I’m not worried. I’m just glad I was prepared the first time. Tho I will say schools need to be better about explaining sex and periods in the SexEd course. Most of what I know about sex I learned from my mom and the internet. If I have a daughter one day I will make sure I teach her about periods and sex well in advance of her hitting puberty.

There are also 5 people in the backstreet boys🤷‍♀️. They also came together in 93 and are still producing albums which is kinda impressive. Also, my 8 year old(it came out when she was 7) right away goes omg she's a panda she got her period. This is exactly how a backstreet boys concert was

Y'all didn't hear / heard negative things about this movie due to a combination of Disney not promoting Pixar the way they promote their own animations (compare marketing of Encanto vs Turning Red), and SOME parents being turned off that this movie dare discuss periods, teenage crushes, and other female issues. I'm glad y'all found it eventually. You all looked like you had so much fun watching & reflecting on childhood
