First otb chess tournament of 2024 was accompanied by several adventures. It had still gone relatively well, considering.
I played some good games and a bad one, got to learn what it was like to play chess with a high fever and intestinal issues too:D You live and learn.

"So I stop the car, open the hood, reach for the hot water thing..." Yep, say no more. Most cars have a warning label on that radiator cap about this.
@michaelf8221
@michaelf8221 4 ай бұрын
For the record, even if you didn't burn yourself, you should know never to open the hood of a car that's smoking. Worst case scenario you burn yourself like you did. Best case scenario you're feeding oxygen to what could be a fire. Opening the hood is how you transition from smoke to an all-out fire. If it's white smoke, stop the engine, get out of the car, and let the car sort itself out. If it's black smoke, keep the hood closed and call the fire department - you're likely to have a fire on your hands in minutes.

Wow, I'm glad you're OK. That's a heavy lesson to learn about overheating cars. Glad you're on the mend! And man, being incredibly sick *plus* the burns? That's a helluva bad/challenging couple of weeks. Nice to hear you're a climber! I was addicted to rock climbing on the east coast of the USA, in my 20s and 30s, before moving to Alaska and trying my hand at mountainerring (and discovering that, for me, there was far too much suffering in the cold and dark!😂) Cheers! Here's to a speedy recovery and healthy next tournament!

Absolutely agree! A 1300 nowadays would probably crush a 1300 from back then. Still, loved the way this guy played-solid moves, no fear against a 1900, and some nice attacking spirit.

To be honest if he played a bit more solid he could have easily drawn after the queens were traded off. That’s why I don’t like the Caro against weaker players
@luka_fn1879
@luka_fn1879 4 ай бұрын
it’s very solid but especially against players 200-300 rating points lower than yourself (like 1700) I would imagine they would be able to draw you in that endgame)
@atmeeinatmeaus4213
@atmeeinatmeaus4213 4 ай бұрын
@@luka_fn1879 i really dont think so. I've had enough players in the 1700-1800 range that managed to make mistakes in positions with way more pieces traded off and very little room for winning chances. The position after the queen trade has lots of opportunities, there is nothing like a easy draw. I would not even call it an endgame, since there are almost all pieces still on the board
@luka_fn1879
@luka_fn1879 4 ай бұрын
@@atmeeinatmeaus4213 but if you’re playing against a weaker player it’s way easier to play the Sicilian for example as there aren’t any drawish lines. In the exchange Caro it’s pretty easy to draw with white if he knows what he’s doing
@atmeeinatmeaus4213
@atmeeinatmeaus4213 4 ай бұрын
@@luka_fn1879 it might be it is easier to draw than in the Sicilian, on the other hand it is harder to win for the weaker player as well. But my main point is, that i still think, that there is no way, this game would be an example of how drawish the exchange is. It seems like the opposite to me, this game after the queentrade showcased a position with great chances to outplay your opponent, and it is especially lightyears away from being "easily drawn" as mentioned by you.

I don't even understand why a 1900 gets paired up against a 1300 because the difference in chess skill between the two is just absurb to say the least... Why don't they create separate rating groups like group A 1900+ , group B 1700 -1950, etc...
@bluefin.64
@bluefin.64 4 ай бұрын
Some tournaments have sections based on ratings. Others are open. Some do both, with the top section being open. There's room for it all, and why not? It's not like the players don't know what they're getting into. The lower rated players especially want a chance to play higher rated ones.

Nc3 is such an annoying move to face as a booked up caro kann player. Sure, youre position is better and your opponent basicly admitted that he has not studied these positions before, but its always sad, when you cant flex with your 20+ moves of opening theory. Id much rather equalize on move 26 tbh.
