In Europe people mount such tires mostly for improved traction specially if they go daily on unpaved roads, gravel, dirt, snow, mud..

In 1967 I got my driver's license. My Dad said he would find me a car, but I would have to pay for it. I got a job at Gerlands supermarket in the produce department. It was for a couple of hours after school during the week and all day Saturday. It paid 75 cents per hour, which was minimum wage in those days. When I had $50 saved for a down payment, my Dad took me to a used car lot on Washington Avenue in Houston. We made a deal with Bernie, the car lot owner for a 1962 Rambler American. When I tell you it was a basic no-options car, it had no radio, no ac, no power steering ,and the brakes were scary. It was gray in color almost like the color of primer paint, but it was real paint. The cost was $300. I paid $50 down and $10 per week until it was paid for. I drove that Rambler for 3 years and then gave it to my brother. This video has taken me back to my youth. I graduated high school on this day May 28th 1969 and I drove that Rambler to the ceremony. Thanks for the memories.

Hello, If your contest is still on and you have the '62 Rambler I'd be extremely interested and hope to be chosen. When I was in high school in 1971 my father bought a 1962 Rambler convertible exactly like yours, that was red, red interior with a white convertible top. My dad saw the car parked at the curb in front of a house next to the school with four flat tires, it had sat there for months. He knocked on the door, offered $100 and the owner said yes. The little Rambler became a family fun project of polishing the dull paint, putting new carpet, and on weekends going with my dad to a junkyard for a few missing parts. One was the electric motor to raise and lower the top. Once finished it was a fun car to drive with the top down. The 6-cylinder engine always ran great, I'm sure the one on yours is equally good. Then by 1999, the Rambler not used for years, in a barn and looked old and tattered, my father had it junked. It broke out hearts, but that's the way he was. I saved the hubcaps from it. Since then we've always been big American Motors fans, now we go to AMC car shows in hopes of finding another '62 Rambler like ours. Finding one unrestored would be even better, so it would again become a family fun project for my wife, 23 yr old son and myself. Nice of you to clean away all the mouse poop for the new owner. Maybe we'll learn who the lucky new owner will be, maybe us? Cheers, Scott

This little gem is going to get another chance to shine. It’s a shame that Rambler/ AMC didn’t survive. I realized some of it was taken by Jeep/ Chrysler but that the soul of the corporation didn’t survive. It would be an honor to have this beauty to restore and parade around town. I’m likely disqualified from winning as I live in Canada. But this is just the type of vehicle a retired 67 year old guy would love to restore. Hell if I won I’d come pick it up because I’ve got the time. 👍🇨🇦
@chrisbirman9397

Some of it was taken by jeep/ chrysler??? Sir, AMC owned Jeep. The AMC lineup lost popularity and dwindled down to the Eagle then down to Jeeps only. Sales were not high enough due to stability problems ie. Too short of a wheelbase and narrow width. As a result they went bankrupt and Chrysler stepped up and bought the Jeep brand.

Those “grooves” in the back tires are a sign to us Old Heads that those are what were called “snow tires” that went on junk prior to the first snowfall! 🤣 And when you rode in a car with snow tires on and on a snow-free road, you got a strange sounding “wirrr” from the tires! 🤣💚 Great job, Guys!

Anyone remember "Studded" snow tires? You could do some pretty cool burnouts on dry pavement with them. Sparks would fly the first couple times you did one. Then you would either wear the studs down or rip them out of the tire.

Also for mud, if you lived in an area without paved roads on rainy days these provided some extra grip, until you got stuck anyways and had to continue on foot and bring the tractor the get the car out of the ditch. So many memories

These cars are absolutely under rated. A car like that should never be stripped, but rather restored. Càndy apple red, house of color. Strip the engine down and rebuild it if it's good. Otherwise, I see a updated chevy 3.5l going in it. That would an awesome car if done right.

Those weird grooves were just a design. Those tires are the old aggressive "Mud And Snow" tires even though there was no such marketing. AMC championed their cars a "Go-Anywhere" cars meaning you could go to the beach or to the mountains and get through just fine. That ideology lasted throughout AMCs life ending with the all wheel drive AMC Eagle station wagon....possibly the first "Crossover" even though no such segment existed when that car was made.

What an awesome little car. My first car in High School was an AMC Rambler. It definitely needs to get back on the road. I drove mine to the first concert of Bruce Springsteen's World Tour where he shot the Dancin' in the Dark video where he pulled Courtney Cox up on stage. During the concert he told a story about car shopping with his Dad and wanting to come home with something cool but they came home with a Rambler instead. All my friends laaughed at me but they still rode home in mine.

Best high school story ever. My buddy owned a Rambler and I borrowed my dad’s Pinto station wagon. Somehow we ended up racing up a hill, not exactly the battle of the titans you could say. He passed me on the left and as I looked over at him he had a huge grin & a thumbs up 👍. Although there were no other cars on the road at that time of the night/morning, a cop happened to crest the hill. Great video, guys. Those little Rambler American cars were sweet. The engine, whether OHV or side valve, are trusty little things. The much later 4.0 inline 6 from Jeep Cherokee, are a simple drop in. This is a car that really needs to be restored and preserved. Come to that, to restomod it, pick an AMC V8. They are all the same block, so anything up to the 401cid will fit. That would be a screaming deal! If you were referring to the tread on the back tires, those are good old-fashioned snow tires. The treat looks like that of a Firestone Town & Country, which is, bekyeve it or not, an H speed rated, Police Pursuit specified tire with incredible traction

Love those old ramblers. My grandma had one but it was a wagon. I would like to teach my grandson the basics of repairing old cars, from minor engine repair to bazic weldinng and metal fabrication.

I would definitely rebuild this car for date nights with my wife and then when our daughter is old enough. Give it to her because she loves old cars working on them looking at them collecting hot wheels (in packages). I know this car don’t seem like much to most people but it is more than a car build it’s a memory. Plus it’s a pretty cool car.

Old man here and remember my father getting one a few model years older.....I still have all my old standard sized American wrenches. It's a resto project for me...plain and simple. I know of old parts yards on the southern tier in NY. I'll find the parts and make her like back in the day.....ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!

That would be a really different and fun car to restore. Major American car history.

Cars back then had separate snow tires. Also much of the interior such as the door panels, dashboard, and steering wheel was made of metal. Also by looking at the windshield wipers, GM was the company that started the craze of reversing the passenger side wiper on American cars. Most American cars had both windshield wipers leaning towards the middle.

What a cool old car! Id get it running, fix the holes in the floor and enjoy it for a few years. Eventually I would restore it but not until I enjoyed it first.

As a previous Rambler owner, I would restore it to its original glory.
