So I've been keeping jumping spiders for over a year now, raising a couple slings to adults, so I can try and help give some advice! I've found that feeding at least once a week works really well for adolescent to adult jumping spiders. Slings need to be fed every couple days. So if it seems like she isn't taking her food, she's most likely not hungry. *Unlike tarantulas, who will eat themselves to death,* jumping spiders will stop when they're full. There is also a chance she just doesn't like fruit flies. XD I have a tarantula that will refuse anything but crickets. She's a spoiled little thing. You can also tell when they are about to molt as they will reinforce their nest and will not leave it. Everything else you're doing is good! Some channels I would recommend is tarantula kat. She has a ton of videos about her jumping spiders and is also just a lovely person! Welcome to the hobby and be careful, it's addicting lol *Edit* Tarantulas can't eat themselves to death, but they can eat too much and become fragile.

Y'all are right. Tarantulas won't 'explode', I had read that on some care sheets and didn't realize it was a myth. Apologies for that. But they for sure can get very fragile with too much food and an enlarged abdomen. More susceptible to getting hurt or dying if they fall.

I once found a jumping spider on my balcony. I gave it a small mealworm to eat from my colony and it started to attack it multiple times. Unfortunately the exoskeleton of the worm was too hard and the bites couldn't get through it (and in about two minutes so many ants collaborated together to take away the worm and the spider was there watching them stealing with a "wtf" expression lol. I started filming when it happened, so hilarious). So I tried again and gave the spider the tiniest mealworm I could find and this time it attacked it successfully:)

So excited you got one, I used to keep a male and he was great! One tip, make sure you clean their 'safety line' webbings. Whenever they jump, they use a thread of web to make sure they jump safely. If these lines accumulate, the spider could get tangled in it and lose a leg. D:

New owner. Mine is also a sub-adult for the same reason u stated. Day 1- I put her/him in the enclosure with a timed LED over the top - 12hr on/12 off & I spritzed a little water on the wall incase it was dehydrated from shipping. Day 2 - I put a few flightless fruit flies in - it didn't seem very interested and in fact looked quite lethargic & was having trouble climbing well but later in the day I noticed that one of the fruit flies that I squashed by accident was gone, Day 3 - the other flies were gone & my little spood seems a bit fatter & more active & had a good look at me for a while as I hovered, she/he seems to have found a preferred hiding place but hasn't build a nest yet. Seems a very shy spider - I've interacted with loads in the wild as I often photograph them but this one seems quite timid. I've given myself a rule not to bother it or take her/him out for this first week so that it can settle & feel safe but get used to me pottering around daily. Fingers crossed that my little spood will warm up & become bolder & more active.

Advice from a Jumping 🕷️ spider momma don't leave the fruit flies in the fridge all the time. You just need to put them in the fridge for a few minutes when you're going to feed Betty. Otherwise the fruit flies will die fast if they're always cold.

I have several jumping spiders. Each one eats on different days. Twice a week is usually enough to feed them. With fruit flies I leave them in with the jumping spider. While moulting they won't want food, so feed them a couple of days after moulting. While handling the spiders, just remove the carcasses of the fruit flies, I use tongs. I leave a water bowl ( a tattoo ink pot) glued with hot glue in the enclosure on the side elevated. I spray with water, so it can drink off the side, and gives humidity as well. I have LED lights on the shelf, as well. UK natural light isn't too good at all.

Ah cool. Are they also as picky as Betty? haha. She recently just moulted, and is looking on the skinnier side. She didn't take any food when I put it in, but I figured it's worth leaving one little fly in there. I haven't seen it since, so one can only hope she caught it lol

@@protocetid they are not as entertaining, but they are in my book a little bit cooler. You can't really handle them as they make webs but they are like jumping spiders that live longer (maybe around 3-5 years) and are larger and come in variation of color too. But they aren't extremely active which is a bit boring.
@protocetid

@@Mothobius Read velvet spiders are social too, they could posses behaviors that can be artificially selected for that would make them extra appealing to humans. Do they never leave their webs? Non social animals sometimes don’t want to even be interacted with nor do they understand social cues. Can't find a detailed description of general or species specific social behavior, if one of the colony building species does things like groom each other then theoretically they could be bred to seek and enjoy human touch. A minimum of one almost eusocial species, Stegodyphus dumicola, can live alone too.

I think these little jumping spiders are so cute, but I am always confused. All the YT videos I have watched, no one seems to have a special heating system for their spiders. But in the shops, they always recommend that they have at lest 28 to 30°C in their enclosure...Maybe thats just a thing here in germany or something, i dont really know

I will be getting my first jumping spider in two weeks and am very excited but I’m a little anxious about the feeding part though as I know nothing about how to keep the live food! ( and I can’t find any videos on this) Do I just buy a tub of fruit flies or whatever they eat at their instar age and keep them in the fridge? How long does a tub of flies last until they die? Also I’m in the uk so do I need a heat mat? There seems to be mixed opinions on this so don’t know what to do for the best? 😬😰

Congrats on getting one! I am not an expert but I think it is best to keep the flies in warm places such as an airing cupboard / reptile room if you had one and then before giving them to the spider you can put one in the fridge to make it easier for the spider to catch (you dont have to but it makes them slower and less difficult for the spider to chase!). So I would say just keep them somewhere quite warm or look up their lifespan and where they would live in the wild! Hope this helps!

Hi! So I just got my very first jumper yesterday I got a Philippe’s Johnson’s or Johnson’s jumping spider she’s a beautiful red back she’s still a bit unsure about me ….i have her in her for now home and I’m still a bit scared to hold her and I’m sure she can sense that but I’m more scared that I’m going to hurt her because she’s small. She’s my very first spood and I’m actually afraid of them lol I got her hoping she would get me over my fear and so far I Announce myself before getting close to her home I tell her she’s so pretty and that I hope one day she likes me … how do I get myself to be ok with her eventually being on my hand ? How do I direct her? I don’t wanna scare her or hurt her or lose her she’s super tiny lol

Jumping spider feeding is certainly a process, lmao! My p. princeps, Bowie, is the pickiest eater. I'm a new keeper, he's my very first jumper and I've had him for almost 3 weeks now. Hopefully when he's older feeding won't be this much of a challenge.

So I just got my jumping spider , but she spends alot of time inside her hammock. I want to try n bond with her but I don't want to disturb her and force her out if she doesn't wanna come out. I figured I'd ask what you would recommend I do to try n bond? The breeder i got her from told me the other spoods are all in their hammocks now so they may molt soon. So I'm not sure if that has anything to do with her possibly gonna molt soon?

Try to remove anything that isn't eaten. I've only ever head of tiny babies, being offered giant locusts getting injured. Just keep an eye out on any strays if your gecko doesn't get it. Shouldn't be an issue.

Have you tried different food or different sized food? May be offer one at a time in front of it - if you're currently leaving a bunch in a bowl. Some geckos won't recognise that theres food there.

I remember a few years back someones gecko would eat anything and everything, she also ate moss, and it came out the other end still looking like moss! Since it's natural, it should hopefully pass through the geckos system. But if it seems like your gecko keeps eating it, then it may be best to remove it.

keep your flies in high temperature high humidity! when your ready to feed tap a few into a smaller container and refrigerate only for about 30 minutes. putting the whole colony in the fridge for too long will kill them all

I have a tarantula and I've really enjoyed taking care of her. But when I got my first jumping spider I just fell in love. I realized then why people love them so much. By the way, if you start breeding fruit flies, you might like getting some dart frogs. I think dart frogs would be something you particularly would really like keeping.
