Luka Dončić carried the Dallas Mavericks on his back to the Western Conference Finals, but couldn't seem to find his stride against the Golden State Warriors to advance and face the East. Now, with the Mavericks eliminated from the playoffs in 5 games, Nick Wright explores where his team went wrong, and where they can improve if they want to see another conference final next season.

Luka team took them to the finals, they where just too gassed to win anymore, you could tell that in game 2, when they had no legs with a big lead.... The team was sometimes better when he was on the bench, he is great, but that team gave me a belief that they could beat the warriors, watching Luka bricking in moments he needed to be a sure fire superstar happened to much in these past two series... Kidd should of worked his bench in 3rd quarter all the way down to boban in game 2, I couldn't believe he kept his starters in, they where just getting more tired. This should have been a sweep, warriors just Knew they could take it at home.... Luka is great, not debating that, but to me the team really wanted to beat the suns.

Rudy Gobert and Russ are two players this team could use.. Provided that Russ would want to run the offense off the bench when Luka rests as Russ needs the ball to go to work. Mavs need a big man who can defend, so Gobert ticks that box, doesn't need to score but can be a lob threat/pick and roll to play the game Luka runs. They should also look at Kuzma or KCP. So unconscious shooting when Luka cools.. Just some thoughts out loud

But overall I believe Jalen Brunson is good enough to be Luka's sidekick and then after it's all about what supporting cast they surround those two.

It's amazing how no one sees that Luka needs a center...a big center would be perfect as a 2nd option for Luka, just look at the Mavs offense most of the time, Luka brings the ball up the court and the rest of his team just hanging around the arc waiting to shoot threes, it's so easy to defend a team playing like that. Powell was shying away from the ball in the paint the whole series and couldn't even contribute with rebounds. Give Luka a good center (I'd personally prefer Jokic) and the Mavs are instant title contenders
@swhoshing6237
@swhoshing6237 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, i totally agree there. They have no presence under the rim and it makes them one dimensional. They have trouble rebounding and unless Luka posts up or lobs it to Powell, they are always going for the long distance shot. They got out rebounded by Jazz, Suns and GSW. And it wasn’t even close. I mean on average teams got like 10 more rebounds and a lot of them were on the offensive side. I also believe that a true center could elevate this team to another level. I wouldn’t mind for the Suns and Ayton to not patch it up so that Dallas can go after him. Gobert could be another option. Embid or Jokic would be an overkill, but i’m sure no Mavs fan would mind 😁

Would I be wrong for thinking that the warriors depth is what won that series? I mean granted Luka looked exhausted, but I feel like we saw many times, the warriors take Klay, Curry, Green & Wiggins out of the game, and throw Poole, Kominga, Looney, Moody in there, and they are all fantastic players capable of playing with some of the best. And they look particularly good when the other team has to keep some of their starters in there to avoid being blown out, and they are frankly exhausted. Yeah luka needs to get in better shape, particularly endurance, but the Warriors just have too many horses.

The only reason he didn't win more is cause he got hurt. Stop capping for Luka so much he lost just like Trae did, he and his team need to be better.

The Pistons won with no clear hall of famers. The warriors won with only one clear cut hall of faker and a great system. Kobe’s 2-peat without Shaq, had no other clear cut Hall of Famer. The problem is, Mavs traded their last good (e.g. lottery) picks getting KP & Luka. Obviously, did the right thing with Luka, but KP trade severely hampered their drafting ability. Already in luxury tax before this check Brunson is about to get. They will have to be aggressive from here and make the right moves, Miami Heat style, to get over the rest of the West anytime soon. Powell HAS to be upgraded. Bullock probably needs to be upgraded too. And unless Tim Hardaway Jr plans to truly be 6th man of the year caliber production, they'll need to upgrade either Brunson or Dinwiddie to keep up with the multi-star juggernauts.

@@xcwilliams7980 Steph, klay, and dray didn't enter the league as Hall of Famers. They will all be HOF because they not only have talent, but also supreme, extraordinary desire, undying flame and ambition to excel. For that matter, Steph, klay, and dray have a really unique bond and chemistry, which fortune and fate brought them together. It's like a story one only finds in anime. The point is, sure you can find talent all around the league, obviously. The issue is, can you find players who also have that same obsessive drive to win, like Warriors big 3. Look at other superstars, like Harden, Westbrook, Paul, etc. who could also be HOFers, yet weren't able to win rings on pure talent alone. They lack certain attributes necessary to close out games or series. Thus merely acquiring a superstar talent may not be enough to get your team to a championship, and win it all.
