Not a single CB in the league can compete with OBJ one on one. They need to put a safety over the top and a linebacker playing the slants and drags. That's a triple team. Defenses know Giants had only one offensive scheme and that's to get Odell the ball, since they had no running game nor did they they have a deep ball game cause the oline couldn't block for too long. Also, no player in the league had been double teamed as much as OBJ in the last 2 years before his injury filled 2017 season. Now that Odell has Saquan Barkley watch how his game takes another level.

I know this is late but the person who changed the game was Bob Hayes. Defenses went from straight man to zone and different schemes to try to stop him. Look it up.

Bob Hayes changed the game then Moss changed it again permanently. Cloud, bracket, cover 2 man, LINEBACKERS helping the bump with the corner like a punt return team. Changed the WR and corner athletic archetype. He took 2-3 men with him every play and Moss was still the first option on a chunk of the plays. It’s easy to see why he was on 2 of the top 3 or 4 (not sure anymore) highest scoring teams. 2 or 3 defenders were 40-50 yards down the field with Moss whether the QB looked or not. What are overall numbers worth when you’re so dominant that you are a decoy on a large chunk of offensive snaps? This is why if you didn’t actually watch Moss or you don’t know football you don’t really get it. Everybody who knows football knows the best corners don’t get the most picks after they are considered the best corners. The QB doesn’t test them. Moss career was essentially the same at WR. The first objective for most if not all of those defenses he faced was not getting beat deep by Moss so Moss as a decoy benefited the rest of the offense. Looking at stats alone confuses a lot of these fans. I’m picking Moss before anybody

Randy Moss was a gazelle with hands made of glue and the eyes of an eagle. He was amazing. The first time I saw him play with Tom Brady against the Jets seas eye opening. Seeing Moss in Minnesota I thought he was great, not so much in Oakland, but that's on Oakland. Being able to see him on the team I followed with great coaching and game planning alongside a quarterback that can hit him anywhere on the field and throw him open. That was the year I realised Tom Brady was not a product of his system or over hyped or just lucky. His first long TD on the Patriots against the Jets he was double covered at the line with a safety over the top to make him triple covered, and he just out ran all of them and caught the ball so easily with outstretched arms and the Jets players were falling further behind with every step; I didn't think there were men alive who were so much faster than everybody else. His ability to go to the ball and catch it in stride was unparalleled. He also had the jumping ability of an NBA player in a dunk contest. Just unbelievable. I think that even now he could be a first option on some teams and a second option in a top passing team, but he probably is getting a little old to keep getting tackled. I would sign him just to run a couple times when it's 3rd and 20+ or a Hail Mary situation and to have him stashed on my roster for a conference championship game or super bowl. He is just that gifted.

Randy Moss is the greatest WR in history. I admire Rice for his route-running, work ethic and incredible durability but Moss was easily more of a problem and was the engine (with Brady) of the best team in modern memory - the 2007 Pats. Rice will own the record books because he was still a good receiver into his late 30s and early 40s. However, in GOAT debates across sports I give very little weighting to longevity once the player was no longer at the top. That and Rice had the West Coast Offense, Montana and Steve Young. Odell is a great athlete and could have starred in soccer or hockey, but he's not in Moss's league as a WR talent. Moss is the platonic ideal of a WR.

He’s gotta learn to shut up and play and his fan base of middle school bandwagons value a highlight reel catch every year over consistency. He isn’t the biggest, fastest, strongest, best route runner, best hands or really the best at anything. He’s a great receiver but not the best or even close to it

First of all I want to see Odell play big time in an important game, meaning a playoff game before I even consider him. All I remember is him being a complete failure in that playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.

That’s a fair point but these guys are talking about merely physical talent. Everyone knows Odell could have made those catches he dropped in the playoffs since he makes tougher routinely. He was just stuck in his own head maybe overthinking being in the playoffs. That’s definitely a sign that he isn’t there yet mentally if he can get in his own way like that but as a simple physical talent, he’s up there.

J Black the only stupid one is you. Randy Moss played when he wanted to play. Give me a wideout like T.O. that goes hard ALL THE TIME. He also basically ran out route. T.O. went deep, went across the middle, and was a more well-rounded wideout. Randy went deep and alligator armed it across the middle.

Randy Moss is the only reason anyone knows what the tampa 2(cover 2) defense exists. Randy taught non football minded players about a football schemes because his talent was so transcendent that game coverage had to be detailed to describe how teams would TRY to cover him. Randy changed the game forever.

There are good receivers, great receivers, and legendary recievers...but Moss was a FREAK receiver...an absolute ‘no fair,’ cheat code, glitch-in-the matrix type player. He’s in the same freak club as Lawrence Taylor, Deion, and Barry Sanders. Guys like OBJ are awesome talents but a good system could shut them down. When Randy was on there was simply nothing you could no. Single coverage - no chance. Bring over the safety - too late. Prevent defense - maybe, but there was still a good chance he could just out-jump everyone.

The most talented strictly based on talent would have been Calvin Johnson. Easily. There has never been a WR of that size, speed, route running, and athleticism to play the game. At 6'5 ran a 4.32, with a 42 inch vertical, and oh I forgot he was 250 ripped. Put him with a QB like Tom Brady there wouldn't have been any WR record he could not have broken.

yall forgetting about Calvin Johnson.... the man had the best receiving numbers a wr could ever had in a season, if he was still playing he would still be putting up numbers, it just that lions doesnt want to give him up and they wasnt treating him right so he retired early which it is dumb. the only player closer to his receiving yards number in a season is julio. Calvin played hurt through out his career he a 6'5 245 beast who ran a 4.3 40 common now thats a once in a generation player. and its not like he cant play the man can still play he is 32

James Kennedy II Nobody's taken anything from Calvin but he's not even close to Randy Moss in talent. Yes he was bigger but he wasn't as fast as Randy, didn't have better hands, Nobody was really worried about him catching the ball and going 70 yards. Anytime Moss touched the ball it was the potential to be 6. Did you know Moss was so explosive that his rookie year when the Vikings needed a big play they let him return punts at 6'4. Just go back and watch Calvin's highlights and Randy's highlights and you can see the difference.

Randy wasnt better nor faster... he played longer than calvin but calvin wouldve definitely passed him in career yards. Randy played for 14 years soooo ofc he gonna have better stats. Calvin is more of a bigger Threat short routes than randy. Calvin runs after catch was crazy.

It took Randy Moss 16 games to break Jerry's single season TD record by one. Jerry Rice only played 12 games the season he caught 22 TDs cuz of the NFL strike; he was on pace to score 29 TDs that season.. Just shows how great Jerry really is when you use the "if" argument with Jerry

Xavier Vega That’s your opinion. I can see it being tougher as far as what was a penalty and what was not but that’s it. The majority DB’s were more talented and refined in Moss era. Rice played in a game changing West Coast offense that focused on passing the ball while the vast majority of the league was running the ball still. It makes sense that DB’s became more athletic and more refined in their position as the league evolved into a passing league. Rice had the most targets in the NFL for years. So what was tougher?
