Thank you! Thank you! Just finished uploading my teacher video/info with italki this morning before I came across your video. It helped me in 2 ways. I am now more relaxed about those first lessons, plus I am using your video to try to convince a friend to join the adventure. She started applying at Chinese schools with kids first and is on the brink of a nervous breakdown from the interviews, despite having a lot of TEFL experience. I think this video will get her to listen to me (you) and give italki a chance. (Oh shit, she is going to see this post now. Oops. Hi M! - Sorry)

After watching your video, I could get an idea of some struggles of online teaching. Now, I know how to introduce myself to my teachers. As an awkward ESL student who is introverted and with a “less than ideal” level of creativity when it comes to topics to talk about during the class, I’m particularly Ok with the textbooks if the teacher knows how to use it in his class. I’m pretty afraid of some teachers’ profiles that ask the students to bring their topics to the class😰. Thanks for the video !!!😊

Hey! You can choose 30, 45 or 60 (it's up to you). I would say % wise it's 50% 45 mins, 40% 60 mins and 10% 30 mins, although it really varies teacher to teacher. @davidostrowski679
@davidostrowski679 5 жыл бұрын
@@happycreation3515 don't worry i'm happy to help! It is very flexible, however you have to be clear with students on how to action a rescheduled lesson. I talked about this in the Italki Problems video I think. If you agree beforehand but less than 24 hours before, you have to wait for the lesson time to be over then select 'reached prior agreement' before a student can do anything. Sometimes they may misunderstand and select 'teacher did not attend lesson'. When this happens your profile is made invisible until you email Italki to explain what happened. Once in Colombia I had a power cut and had to reschedule 8 lessons, I messaged them all using wifi at a nearby mall, but 3 selected teacher did not attend, basically i was one missed lesson away from being banned, so you have to be careful!

Can you make a more in depth video about the teaching material? I have an extensive collection of various pdf textbooks for teaching in vivo, but this is new to me...also I'm afraid there might be some infringement issues if I keep distributing them.

@davidostrowski679
@davidostrowski679 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg thanks! Since I started with Italki last year, I pretty much stopped staying in hostels, with the exception of the odd occasion where I take a week off. I had to do it once in a hostel in Cancun when my Airbnb host went AWOL and in Phuket (hostel had huge quiet common area) but luckily it was mostly regular students and they were aware of my situation. I normally stay in countries for longer now so I normally benefit from monthly discounts on Airbnb, usually staying with a local but don't have any issues!

very informative! a few questions I have are do you get enough clients right away when starting or do you have to build up a clientele? how many hours a week do you work? do you get to choose how much or how little you work? do you ever do lessons at a cafe or public places?
@davidostrowski679
@davidostrowski679 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mason! I pretty much started getting enough clients right away (in some cases too many!). After almost a year I have about 60% regular, 20% sporadic and 20% new students each week. I do between 18-30 lessons a week but it's normally around 22. It depends really how much I'm travelling or filming videos (at the moment I only do 3 days a week Italki). Yes you can set your availability to whatever you want! So if you feel like a week off, just delete the date range (although lessons already accepted will still have to go ahead) No I've never done lessons in cafes or public places purely because of distractions and noise (I stay in Airbnbs now not hostels as I used to). However, some students do lessons in cafes, at their desk at work or even the back of their car! Hope that helps!

this is the most helpful video i have seen too far from so many videos😀😊😊..you are so talented at speaking and explaining the way we should do the natural and real communication we have to put into conversation👌👌..i just love all your tips😍..Love this video❤❤🌹..But i didn't know that online teaching you can't use books and you have to realize all the exams by yourself i think it's kinda hard or it will take so many hours of the day for each student you have to prepare a diffrent material depending on their preferences..And what else bothers me its that when u have to teach engish to a student who doesn't know english at all and want to begin from level A1 what language can you speak with him if he don't understand english yet🤔😞😞please reply me if you can..😊😊
@davidostrowski679

Hey thanks! Don't worry as most students on Italki will be B1+ level, so you rarely have people that you have to start from scratch with. You can use books if you want, but for intermediate to advanced it's not necessary as they have a grasp of grammar and you can coach them while speaking. There's another load of videos I did that go into more detail. In terms of planning, it doesn't take that long, I have a huge pdf document I use with convo topics, obviously planning for some students can take longer if their needs are more specific. You can email me if you want and I'll send you the pdf doc (email is in the description of my videos)

Haha it was ok as I was using preply at the time, not italki. It was mainly bad connection as I was in Malaysia at the time. Sometimes you do have crap lessons, maybe what you prepare just doesn't work, but it's also down to the student, sometimes they forget about the lesson or have other things on their mind and it's difficult to get them engaged!
