After watching your video, I could get an idea of some struggles of online teaching. Now, I know how to introduce myself to my teachers. As an awkward ESL student who is introverted and with a “less than ideal” level of creativity when it comes to topics to talk about during the class, I’m particularly Ok with the textbooks if the teacher knows how to use it in his class. I’m pretty afraid of some teachers’ profiles that ask the students to bring their topics to the class😰. Thanks for the video !!!😊

Hey! You can choose 30, 45 or 60 (it's up to you). I would say % wise it's 50% 45 mins, 40% 60 mins and 10% 30 mins, although it really varies teacher to teacher. @davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын
@@happycreation3515 don't worry i'm happy to help! It is very flexible, however you have to be clear with students on how to action a rescheduled lesson. I talked about this in the Italki Problems video I think. If you agree beforehand but less than 24 hours before, you have to wait for the lesson time to be over then select 'reached prior agreement' before a student can do anything. Sometimes they may misunderstand and select 'teacher did not attend lesson'. When this happens your profile is made invisible until you email Italki to explain what happened. Once in Colombia I had a power cut and had to reschedule 8 lessons, I messaged them all using wifi at a nearby mall, but 3 selected teacher did not attend, basically i was one missed lesson away from being banned, so you have to be careful!

I had to do it once in a hostel in Cancun when my Airbnb host went AWOL and in Phuket (hostel had huge quiet common area) but luckily it was mostly regular students and they were aware of my situation. @davidostrowski6796 жыл бұрын
Hey Mason! I pretty much started getting enough clients right away (in some cases too many!). After almost a year I have about 60% regular, 20% sporadic and 20% new students each week. I do between 18-30 lessons a week but it's normally around 22. It depends really how much I'm travelling or filming videos (at the moment I only do 3 days a week Italki). Yes you can set your availability to whatever you want! So if you feel like a week off, just delete the date range (although lessons already accepted will still have to go ahead) No I've never done lessons in cafes or public places purely because of distractions and noise (I stay in Airbnbs now not hostels as I used to). However, some students do lessons in cafes, at their desk at work or even the back of their car! Hope that helps!

Hey thanks! Don't worry as most students on Italki will be B1+ level, so you rarely have people that you have to start from scratch with. You can use books if you want, but for intermediate to advanced it's not necessary as they have a grasp of grammar and you can coach them while speaking. There's another load of videos I did that go into more detail. In terms of planning, it doesn't take that long, I have a huge pdf document I use with convo topics, obviously planning for some students can take longer if their needs are more specific. Hi David. I clicked on your Italki link to apply for a job, but it only asked me to register first. Once I did that, I clicked on the email they sent me, but it directed me for me to pick a teacher. I could not find a link where to apply. Please help and thanks for your help.

I forgot to ask you, David. Do you have to take out your own taxes? Thanks.
@davidostrowski6796 жыл бұрын
It's kind of irrelevant for me as I don't earn enough to pay tax in the UK (UK tax system) and I'm considered a non resident as I have spent less than 16 days in the UK in the last year (I've spent zero). I have no idea how it works in the US, I'm assuming you would have to declare your income in your tax return

@davidostrowski6796 жыл бұрын
Haha it was ok as I was using preply at the time, not italki. It was mainly bad connection as I was in Malaysia at the time. Sometimes you do have crap lessons, maybe what you prepare just doesn't work, but it's also down to the student, sometimes they forget about the lesson or have other things on their mind and it's difficult to get them engaged!

to be honest you probably wouldn't get much uptake because most students search for native speakers or at least an advanced level. But you never know! Have you thought about teaching your native language on Italki?
