Next season I will be completing a Graduate TESOL certificate to become a professional teacher. This means I can help students with grammar, pronunciation and writing. At the moment most of the classes I teach are casual conversation! As a professional teacher I will also be able to charge more money and help more students. If you haven't tried italki, please do. Hi David! I have a question: when doing a lesson on Skype do you do it through video call (seeing the other person physically on camera) or just audio chat without the visual component? What is the most common method among teachers and students, just audio or video chat? How important is the nonverbal communication (gestures, moving lips when pronouncing) in terms of helping the student better learn the targeted language? In addition, is it necessary a Skype video call (visual) rather than just a phone call (only audio involved) when tutoring a student from Italki? I asked this in reference to the question posted in the following link which expresses similar concerns www.italki.com/discussion/100741 Thank you, in advance, for your kind response!
@davidostrowski6796 жыл бұрын
hey I got your email! I always use Skype and 95% of the time always use video, it definitely helps to include expressions and mouth movements with pronunciation. I do have some students who prefer audio only, that's fine. The only other time I'll do audio only is if mine or their connection is awful, which has happened today!

@davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын
Yes you can sign up as a community tutor without a TEFL, however you would be expected to charge less, do more 'informal conversation' and wouldn't necessarily be expected to be able to describe grammatical points like conditionals etc and pronunciation points like elision etc Also as a non-native, it may be tough getting students as most prefer a native speaker. Second, make sure that you remember to pause, pause, pause while giving tips and connect with listeners or audience.. just rushing in to deliver your tips makes me stop listening. THX!

Do you need a pillow? I can send you one if you like. I usually stay in studio apartments so a bed is usually in the background. Professional teachers are not required that much anymore! People just want native speakers! Others call themselves professional teachers just bcs they have a certificate of some months course!

The nature of teaching has changed. Traditional 'strict' teachers with 40 years of classroom experience used to compiling detailed lesson plans are not a good fit for teaching online, especially those who speak with an accent that is now less common or those who use outdated vocabulary. Most of my Russian students who have had Russian 'English' teachers have been taught grammar etc that were used 50 years ago from a text book, not how it's used today, by natives.
@ahmadsamir3135 жыл бұрын

@@davidostrowski679 the nature of teaching hasn't changed at all! Professional teachers are not strict and boring! Outdated???? Nonsense! Textbooks are authentic and there are a lot of new textbooks! Good professional teachers use a lot of sources and materials! We speak to natives and don't see the difference in grammar! Accent? If you study with a native speaker you won't have an accent??? Knowing a language and teaching it are different things!
@davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын
You don't get what I said. You're referring to Community Tutors on Italki, not Professional Teachers on Italki. Despite that, I'd still never use a textbook unless I was teaching a beginner. Intermediate to advanced require alternative material. By using Cambridge books (outdated language) and an RP accent (no one uses it), the student will not be prepared for the real world. How many times do I have Russian students using the word 'moreover'? As a UK native, I've never heard anyone use that word in my life.
@MiguelJRiley4 жыл бұрын
I get your frustration. Perhaps you feel like someone that has put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into a company; just to have some hot new hire get promoted over you. However, besides the points that David has already mentioned, it has worked the other way around for many years. In the last 50 years, millions of people have been turned down for a position, regardless of their experience and ability, simply due to not having a degree. You are correct that doing something, and knowing how to teach it is different. Over the last few years of teaching, I have learned a lot of techniques that have helped me be more productive in a classroom. However, with advanced students, most of those techniques are not needed or even wanted. With a program such as italki, it seems the students can rate the teacher. For me as a language learner as well as a teacher, I feel being natural is more important than being precise.
