Thanks - this is a really helpful video. I started teaching on italki recently to supplement my income in evenings and at the weekend, and have been pleasantly surprised by how much demand I have had. I decided to price high from the start because I don’t actually need the extra money urgently, and want any extra work I do to be worth my while. I have met some great people, and really enjoy most of the conversations I have. Your video is classy - mine is not up to that standard, though it seems to do the job! I am grateful to you. Your videos were what gave me the idea of teaching on italki and nudged me to act on that idea!

That's the first really helpful video on the subject that I've seen. All the others that I've seen are several minutes with slow talking and persistent and fake smiles, which is just so unnatural.

Glad it was useful for you Stefan! This one is quite old, my up to date video is on my website and Italki profile. I absolutely agree, students want to learn how to speak naturally. I can understand slower speaking for a beginner, but a language learner is far from stupid and needs to be treated like a regular human!

Hola! I use the same editing software that I use for my travel videos. Filmora has an effects store where you can just download them and input text. There's a number of videos in the playlist that I did in Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta last year, they should answer some questions. The biggest thing for me is about being natural and relaxed. Online students do not want a 'strict' classroom style teacher in my experience!

Good question Erika! To be honest it depends on the students you get. Most of mine have always been reasonably advanced so I've stuck with that. I rarely have beginners, but online teaching is more suited to B1+ level as you can already have a conversation. For example I'd probably be ok taking a lesson myself speaking German but there's no way I'd cope in Spanish as I've never studied Spanish grammar for example

Quick question for you... Do you have a lot of iTalki students requesting help with prepping for the IELTS & TOEIC exams? Just wondering because I found an online TEFL program that offers courses for IELTS & TOEIC exam specialization. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to add this specialization on to the 120 TEFL program.
@davidostrowski6794 жыл бұрын
Tons for IELTS. I would say it's not worth it. Reading and listening are pointless to focus on over Skype (student can just do it in their own time, it's more about exam technique), writing can just be corrected via proofreading (with coaching on essay structure) then it's simply speaking practice. There are tons of part 2 and 3 topics in my ebook

No worries. I did a video about this recently in Belgrade which listed them. Italki is my primary income but there's also KZbin ad revenue, Patreon donations, money owed to me from people in the UK (not really income I guess), occassional sponsored videos and my videos are also on another platform called Roku. I'm writing an e-book at the moment all about online teaching which will hopefully be another income!

Update: iTalki rejected my application! They have too many teachers apparently. Maybe I'm wrong but I find that hard to believe! I haven't taught for some years admittedly, but I have a degree, am a native speaker and am CELTA qualified with classroom experience, which I'd have thought would be sought after to some extent at least! My intro video was ok, not the greatest thing you'll ever see, but it ticked the boxes i think. Any similar stories/tips/advice on other platforms or directions to go in now? Reapply with iTalki? At a bit of a loss for the next step

Hi. I've sent a video introducing myself. I applied as community tutor, but I have a question. If they accept my Aplication should I use only computer or can I use my smartphone too? Right now I received an email from Italki. It says, your italki teacher Aplication has been Pre- Approved but not yet accepted. I have to watch a series of Teacher success Videos and schedule a group video call. Is it a good sign?
@davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын
I use my laptop for typing and my smartphone on a tripod for the call. As long as it's stable. The group video call and videos are both quite new (I didn't have them). It's just some 'training' according to Italki, not an interview or anything. So it's a good sign yes!
