Listen man, I don't know if a lot of people appreciate what you do, but I sure do. A lot of folks don't realize how freaking tough it is to fly to another part of a country you know very little about and just take a kayak and not only fish in an unfamiliar area, but actually catch fish that you've never fished for before. I have a lot of respect for you man and your dedication to fishing. Keep it up man, so much fun as a floridian to watch a fellow angler have so much fun in our area

So stoked for you!! I lived in Islamorada for 3.5 yrs and worked those waters via kayak for all of them. I caught Snook, Tarpon and Permit, but can honestly say, don't know if I EVER even saw a Bone. I tried hard to scout them, but never had success. Seeing you achieve what I KNOW is SOOO DIFFICULT made my day!! I was as excited as you were. Nice WORK!!! Thanks for bringing back that feeling. Congrats on your first bonefish. Thanks for taking us along with you on this trip. My dad took me bonefishing many years ago, with a friend of his who was a guide. You have to sneak up on them, watching for their flash of silver just out of the surface of the water. What a thrill, right?

I remember growing up ... I used to watch the Walker's Cay Chronicles on the weekends. Bonefish became my 'grail' fish. It seemed like such an amazing adventure out on the flats. I haven't even gotten through your video yet, but I knew the word 'bonefish' was going to come out of your mouth before you said it. Glad you're chasing down that experience. I'll watch the rest of the video now. ;)

I caught two back in the late 70's when we took yearly family fishing trips to Islamorada. The largest was 4.2 lbs. and nearly spooled me on the first run. I was using 15lb. test on a Ryobi Silver Cloud 5. Probably the fastest fish on the flats. It hit a Mepps spoon with mirror reflective tape.

You are the luckiest man! To just blind cast and catch a decent bonefish is just pure luck! They are one of the best fights on medium tackle. Bone fish is definitely up there with rooster fish, Giant travelly and tarpon in terms of bucket list inshore fish. I’m from so cal and lucky San Diego bay has a steady population of bone fish that migrated from Central American coast in search of cooler waters due to the water being too warm during a severe el Nieno. So I can drive 2 hours on the free way and check the bone fish off the list!

I absolutely relate. I have fished my whole life and never caught one. I had a dream of catching one and went to Freeport and chartered a guide and saw some but didn't catch one. Then went and bounced a bucktail off the bottom off the jetti rocks at dusk in the cut. Something peeled off line. Figured it was a big Jack. When I finally got in I caught a 30 inch trophy Bone. My first ever bone was a fish of a lifetime for me. It was close to 10 lbs. Heck of a fish. Had it been 2 lbs I would have been just as happy. They certainly have a mystique.

A tip I learned from a guide down in Islamorada is that you aren’t actually looking for the bonefish; you’ll never see the actual fish. You are looking for the shadow on the bottom. Sight fishing for bones is primarily done on a slick calm day with little glare on the water, yet enough sun to cast shadows. The best way he put it to me is “remember this, the first time you actually see the fish is when he’s at the boat. You will not see him in the water; you’ll only see the shadow on the bottom.” And he also mentioned mud clouds on the flats. That’s actually how I caught my first bone. We were poling the flat and came up on a mud cloud. I just blind casted right into the middle of it & hooked/landed a bone. Best. Fight. Ever. So much power packed into a small fish.
@Justatoy2611 ай бұрын
@ayo9057 Yes you could. But sight fishing by poling a flat is meant to add the reward & satisfaction of the catch. Anyone can just throw chum in the water; only a few can actually catch them by sneaking onto a school & finessing them to bite without spooking them.

Nice bone! Funny story, we lived in KW for 6 years, for my birthday my wife bought me and my buddy a guide for bonefish. Done lots of tarpon but not bone, and this was THE guy in the keys. Chris took us out and we got settled to look for bones. Darn hard in that water isnt it. So after about an hour we had cracked the corona and lit cigars, and Chris says, hey you wanna cast at that bone going past the boat right now ? I looked and looked, I saw nothing, I looked at my buddy and the guide and said "Nope" -- the guide was got sooo pissed and took us back in. He bartended at the same bar as my wife (Louies Backyard) -- he didnt speak to my wife for months.

They camouflage themselves from predators, in those sand and grassy spots, that match their skin. But they do feed on the white sand spots on the flats. They're so beautiful!! 🌊🎣 🛶
