Lobster hunting at night, but for novice freedivers, that can be scary. We would have one person distract the lobster in the front and someone would sneak up behind and pin them to the floor. Great video, as always! Tip on not flooding your mask, don't make the strap too tight. If it's too tight, it will break the seal around your face. Facial hair - slap on some vaseline or mustache wax to help create a seal.

K McC I use a 10ft Penn Prevail rod and a Penn Fierce 6000 reel. If you can find “beefsticks” rods, grab it. There cheap and does the job. But mostly your looking for atleast a med heavy to heavy rod. I use a 6000 but alot of people go to 8000 or even 10000 size reels. Mostly just feel the setup and see if it’s your fit.

I don't live in Cali but my grandparents do and I visit quite a bit. I haven't caught a whole lot of spiny lobsters but the best advice I can give is to aim for where the carapace meets the abdomen when you grab for them. They'll try to shoot back and you can catch on where the two shells meet. Their front is a tad bigger and combined with the spines, you should have a good hold. Happy hunting!

Without even looking at the map distances, I'm going to just go ahead and say Malibu!!! Love diving there. Miss it. I'm out of Sacramento now, so it's a trek. I have some old vids, but a good simple one of grabbing scallops. One thing I'd say for lobster is your intuition was right. The shallows are the most productive area. Second off, night dive. It's surprisingly less scary than day IMO and incredibly more productive. It's a blast. Third, if you corner one just out of reach, grab a rock and bang it around in their cave. It scares them and can corral them out.

i love dry snorkels but they always leak a little bit of water in. i modified my dry snorkel so that when i surface i keep my face down in the water and reach up with my left hand and lift up the floater up with my thumb. then its easily blow out any water through the purge valve. it works really well. its important to know when it's dry tho so you dont breath in any water. breathed in a few lungs of water until i got used to it ha ha !!! also be super careful with rip tides !!!!!! i almost died in Honduras at a beach called Tela. the current pulled me out faster than i could swim. had to lay on my back and do the whip kick maneuver to get back alive. its a very efficient and fast and relaxing way of swimming long distances without getting tired. thank you mom and dad for swimming lessons !!!!!

Jeremy Jongekryg We didn’t ask for your input, some of us already knew too, but you had to say it. The comment was funny and you decided to explain how they were wrong, tell me, why did you do that?

Hey man I live in SoCal and dive for spiny lobster all the time, so Ill share some tips: 1. Slowly get your hand as close to the lobster as possible before trying to grab them. Lobsters are basically blind and use their antenna to feel pressure changes in the water. When you gently let your hand float towards them it wont scare them off unless you touch their antenna. I sometimes get within 5-6 inches of the lobster before lunging for the grab. This is probably the most important piece of advice. 2. Go for the tail. They always swim backwards when scared, so worst case you will be holding it by the antenna. 3. Dont be gentle and try to pin them down to the ground rather than grabbing them Good luck diving! I really enjoy your videos and if you ever want to go diving in santa barbara hit me up!

Get a dull-tipped hook with a wooden handle bro, works like a charm for those lobsters. I use it to reach around them and work them out of the hole til I can grab them. Good luck🤙🏼
