Just home from Vietnam in 1969 Got my job back and was living with mom and dad until I was drafted. After two years of Army infantry, I wanted a place of my own. I found an old one bedroom cabin on a great bass lake. This was about a 30 min drive from where I worked. $250 a month. My good fishing buddy and I fished that lake every night in the summertime and spent the weekends partying with the girls who's parents had summer homes on the lake. Today I drive by the same lake and it's no different than what this guy had to deal with. A bunch of high buck homes were built at the southern end of the lake. I no longer live there but what socitiy has done just pisses me off. I think my generation had the best of what America use to be.

I believe (if you are in MI) the distance set by DNR and state law is 100 feet to operate a watercraft from someone actively fishing. So, for him to come that close to you with the intent of interrupting your lawful activity is a criminal act (misdemeanor, if I'm not mistaken). Not sure what the distance is required to be from people on land, hunting on/near the same body of water, but let's just suppose it's also 100 feet. You weren't even close to that distance. And, the responsibility falls on them not to discharge in your direction anyway - it's not on you. So, in my professional opinion (former law enforcement, but NOT conservation officer), my gut tells me that guy was in the wrong for approaching you. Not to mention, if it was that big of an issue, why didn't he call the DNR and have a CO come talk to you about it? It's not his job to enforce the hunting/fishing laws, it's the CO's.

My understanding is that there are rules for how far you must stay away from houses and people. And any waterway that is navagable is at least potentially open for hunting/fishing. That might not hold true for an artificial lake, surrounded by private property, but then the burden is shared by the hunter/fisher and whoever granted him access to the lake and environs, should an accident happen. Years ago, I had people firing into the woods on top of the hill above my house. They were on the farm property and had set up a target on a tree at the boundary. The trouble was, their missed shots were arcing through the woods beyond and some hit the house. Local police chief sited them for not following line of sight restrictions as they had provided for no backstop to ensure their bullets didn't harm property downrange. They apologized. We did not press for damages, the three of us agreed to let the matter drop. A little spackle later (no windows had been hit), good as new.

First off hunter harassment applies to hunting and fishing and it is illegal in all 50 states. It only applies when someone is actively trying to disrupt a hunt. Unless this guy was purposefully fishing in a spot to prevent them from hunting, which based on this video he was not, then the only hunter harassment that occurred is when the give deliberately drove his pontoon through where he was fishing. If I was the dude on the boat I would have called the game warden myself.

In addition, that jackass idiot obviously does not know what hunter harassment actually is. It involves intentionally scaring off prey that is being hunted. Use of public land and Hunter safety are covered under basic laws. As long as the old guy isn’t interfering with any of their stuff or buzzing through a spread of decoys I’d say he’s just fishing.

Michigan law states in the 2021 Waterfowl Digest that hunting "must be at least 450' from an occupied building, dwelling, house, residence or cabin, or any barn or other building used in connection with a farm operation. To hunt within a safety zone, you must obtain the written permission of the owner, renter or occupant of the property." Since there is no rearward facing camera we don't know if there even WERE such structures behind the fisherman. That being said, I hunt AND I fish. I'll guarantee those duck hunters were out on the water setting up their decoys & getting settled WELL before daylight. I highly doubt the fisherman had done the same. The flight path of the ducks MAY be coming from the fishermans direction. I've had ducks flare away from my setup cuz of a stinking change in wind. Imagine the ducks seeing a boat between them and the decoys...GONE!!! And I wouldn't doubt the fisherman knew that. If I come across another hunter or fisherman that's ALREADY in an established spot...I APOLOGIZE AND MOVE! The guy fishing was being a passive-aggressive 🐓🍭 and he knew it. "I'm leaving in 5 minutes!" *While never attempting to move* Then using the excuse (BEFORE the hunter started circling) that there are "Fishing harrassment" laws. There most definitely ARE. But how about a little courtesy to who's there first? And WHY tempt getting rained on by shotgun pellets? To prove what point? 🤦♂️🤦♂️

I commend the duck hunters for their concern for others, but they may be overreacting. I would suggest they determine the max distance (which is not the effective distance) that their shot will travel, which is quite simple using Journee's Formula (Pellet Dia (in inches) x 2200 = Max distance (in yards)). For small duck and using shot sizes #6 to #4 (which are 0.110" to 0.130" D), the max distance is 242 to 286 yards. For large duck and using shot sizes #3 to BB (which are 0.140" to 0.180" D), the max distance is 308 to 396 yards. If the poster was correct in his 1,000-ft estimate, he would be out of range of #6 thru #2 shot sizes, and he would hardly notice the impact of the larger 4 sizes. Bottom line is that the hunters and fisherman should respect each other's right to harvest their respective game while getting along as adults, not as petulant children. That's my two-cents worth.

You handled that much better than I would have, he would have been on his way to the hospital to get that muskie lure removed from him 😂

This guy doesn't give a shit about your safety. He just wanted you to know he has a micro. You keep doing you. Don't let these guys tell you anything. They can suck it right along with the duck hunters. Good luck on you next outing.

What a blatant a-hole…I love how you kept fishing!! Bravo !! He was clearly in the wrong ….we get pretty close fishing the DR ..but most fishermen respect one another….guess duck dynasty has a reputation to uphold

When hunting you have to be sure where a missed shot may land, what about the other boats or possible homes accross the lake. Call DNR.

Omg that guy was totally harassing the fisherman. They were probably hunting illegally or something. Seems fishy. If he’s so concerned maybe he should call fish and game police. Otherwise screw off
