5:00 Thanks for letting everyone know the stock trebles on the Artic Spinner are INSANELY close to being over the legal size here in MI, and also fishing it with the correct intentions. PS - I’ve STRUGGLED to get a spinner bite in the river this year. I’ve had a few bites and swipes, but no solid hook ups or landed fish.

Yeah I've measured them and they're basically at the 3/8" limit though depending on if you measure from the outer side of the point and the inner side of the shaft of the hook, or the middle of the shaft and the inside of the point, they're slightly over 3/8" really... I think intention comes into play there then, don't be snagging and you're probably good. But idk DNR will do what they do. Plenty of other people floss snagging fish for the DNR to be giving people crap for making an attempt at real biters and not flossing them off beds... you could swap them out for 1/2" width siwash hooks maybe.
@NickD734 Жыл бұрын
@@justinmacks1481 I’ve texted the maker, Doug Richardson, and he said he used a size 3 treble and measures exactly 3/8” hook gap. I’ve measured them myself and with buddies, and they are indeed super duper close. I went ahead and bent all my hooks in just a tad bit inward to avoid any possible discrepancies or issues. I also agree with the flossing/snagging issue. I think it’s kinda messed up that you can use a 8ft leader and drag your line over a gravel bed and hook fish in every place but the mouth, and that’s perfectly legal, but trying to use an actual lure and get a real bite gets you caught up.. seems like a double standard to me.

In small streams like that, using a small jig and twitching it in front of the salmon will more than likely agitate it to bite. In my experience all salmon will bite a bright jig in front of them, being on the Pacific coast.

Its comical how many people think if you arnt using a float you are strictly flossing or snagging... I tried many different ways and always go back to my trusty nymph with a little weight and slay them. Yea sometimes i get a foul hook. i just break it off or hope it just comes out. But the bite is undeniably and much more rewarding and fun when you don't rely on an indicator. But thats just my two cents. We all fish different though gotta respect the many diffferent ways to catch them legally. This is coming from someone who releases every single one i catch. Not interested in eating rather the fight and letting them reproduce to help the fishery. wish more people respected these fish and let them reproduce and fill our rivers again in the large numbers of the old days...
@jeremyclapp5537 Жыл бұрын
I’ve found the exact opposite. I swing a sinking leader on an 8wt fly rod and it’s more challenging and I can almost always count on a “head” hook up, which I think is the best you could hope for king salmon fishing.
@andrewwallus8474 ай бұрын
I fly fish for these migratory fish and I also think the argument is silly. Youll see people fishing skein and beads trying to tell you that, no matter what, if you catch fish on an egg fly that youre flossing. Lol Im literally fishing an imitation of what youre fishing. If Im "flossing" (while mending the hell out of my line for the whole drift) all artifical lures and flies are out the window. Whats curious to me is that these fish arent supposed to be eating actual food at all bc "their gonads swell so much and they dont have space for it in their stomachs while spawning". And yet... people catch them with actual food. We think we know so much about these fish. Do we?

Arctic spinners are an absolutely fantastic product....BUT, the guy who makes them literally takes ages to get them to you. Last year I waited 3 months and had finally had enough. I emailed the guy and he said he'd send them out Thursday of that week and it never happened. Emailed him again asking for a refund and he responded and did it within 5 minutes. I'm glad that the product works, but it's really annoying to see this guy advertising the product at fishing shows and what not, but then when you go to order them you can't get them. They're certainly popular enough to hire someone else to help with orders. I ended up just dissecting the 1 that I had left and ordered materials to make them myself, and because of that experience, he just lost a customer. Not to take a dump on your relationship with the guy Fray, but people should really know what they're getting into before getting all hyped up about fishing with them when there's a great chance you'll never receive your order for months!
