Thank you Mauri!!!I think the line broke or I got a wind loop,and I didn’t have enough line if I hooked a big fish.I was going to go to Canal Bait and Tackle to get some 50 pound braid,but I didn’t want to miss the bite.Thankfully Jay let me use his backup,because the bite only lasted another 10-15 minutes!!!

There I was sitting on the couch with my wife, eating my breakfast and watching one last video for the morning. At the exact same time, my wife and I both say, "Wait a second, is that Jay? It looks just like Jay!" We were both surprised, and not surprised, that you would know our brother-in-law, Jay. He's a cool shit and maybe someday I'll actually make it out there to fish with him. Keep up tge good work. Your videos are always a great time. And tell Jay that Kevin says hi the next time you see him.

Nice video man. Appreciate you going over the gear and the slow-mo strikes. Can you believe Guppy was going to axe that fluorescent yellow mack color from their lineup? I emailed Wayne Hess one of the owners and told him that was unacceptable and on overcast cloudy days that plug had crushed for me for years and he said “ok buddy the color stays” - talk about a cool dude, he could have told me to kick rocks haha.

Thank you Dan!!! That’s awesome!!! I still haven’t used the yellow guppy,thinking I might keep it as a collection plug.My father has a bunch of the original Hawg Hunter pencils ,and still uses them to this day!!! @@TroutSpankins of course bro. And that’s very cool about your old man still throwing hawgs. I knew Brad who made Hawg Hunter lures really well. I still have 3 myself. And man when I made those videos I thought there would maybe be a couple hundred people that saw them. All I wanted to do was make videos the way I thought they should be made, and every single one I put out was edited on my iPhone using iMovie lol….I wanted to know what gear guys were using, what plugs, I wanted to cut out the 5 minutes it took for guys to release fish and the extra garbage. And as a kid who started fishing the canal when it was 90% just close groups of guys, you knew everyone’s name riding the service road, and guys who were good weren’t always very friendly…..I made it a point that if I ever learned how to truly fish the ditch, I’d never be one of those hardass elitist type cunts who mean mug little kids. I try my best to answer every single question and told myself I’d never be too cool to make fun of myself in the videos or cut out me doing something stupid. I appreciate your kind words and while I filmed a little this season, I will prob just sit on it. But I’d be happy to share a tide with you next year if you were ever so inclined.

@@TroutSpankins And as someone who seems to like Custom Plugs, I’ll have to get you one of my big 9+ inch long cast pencils and one of Mikes Custom Plugs Ditch Witch pencils. Wish I’d kept my mouth shut about those for fucks sake. Mike said it used to take 2 months for him to sell 70 of them and now they’re gone in 2 minutes. But they’re truly special.

@@DanEvan I just got into custom plugs this year,my friend told me about the ditch witch,but when I found out how hard they can be to get,I just said the hell with it.I wiped my bank account clean buying pencil poppers this summer,didn’t even get to use half of them anyway lol.Hopefully next season I’ll be working again,and I’ll have money for more customs.Do you make your own? I’m all about supporting local plug builders!!! If you remember when you see me,ask how I got my Paiva glider,long and funny story behind it lol.And that’s crazy that you made those videos on a phone,they look really good!!! Over time, I’ve soured a bit on the magic swimmer. As many strikes as it draws, even when I do have it canal rigged, I feel like I lose way more fish than I should. I have far more successful hook sets and landings with pencil poppers and paddle tail swimmers. Just trying to say, I feel your pain with the magic swimmer here
@TroutSpankins3 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%!!! Magic Swimmer is actually my least favorite lure to throw at the canal lol
@DanEvan3 жыл бұрын
On those days when plugs like the magic swimmer are working really well, try switching to a stick shadd. You’ll find the hook up to landed fish ratio is nearly 100% compared to the Magic Swimmer. A lot of guys like the 182 fast sinking but I no longer throw that plug at all. My go-to is back to the 182 floater. Most people don’t use them because they blow out of the water, but it’s because they’re rigged with too light of a hook/hooks. I canal rig my 182 floating stick shadd with a 150lb split ring, a Spro #1 330lb swivel, and a cut Mustad 9430DS 5x 5/0 treble hook and a hookless bucktail/feather flag on the tail. Then I’ll rig the 182 regular sinking stick shadd with the same split ring and swivel but a 5/0 6x VMC. The reason I use the mustad on the floater is because the mustad is significantly heavier than the VMC and it causes the stick shadd to float lower in the water and acts as an anchor to keep the lure in the water. The action on the floater when rigged this way destroys the other models. And don’t overlook the big 210 stick shadd if you have the rod to throw it. You don’t have to canal rig that plug it’s plenty strong and when there’s a ton of adult bunker around like there was this year, that plug accounted for half a dozen fish over 40lbs. Food for thought from someone who is the biggest tackle nerd ever, lure builder, degenerate fisherman etc.
