Cape Cross is a hot spot for recreational fishing line entanglements. Recreational fishing lines are not part of commercial fishing, they’re used by hobby anglers all over the world. The ocean provides for them and one would hope they treated the sea better in return. There is simply no excuse why so much of their rubbish ends up in the ocean.

Ghastly damage from that almost invisible line. Thank you for saving these two precious lives, Team OCN!

I use similar line for beading. It’s so sharp that if you accidentally draw it across your fingers the wrong way, it will slice you. It’s impossible to break, so I can see how it cuts so deeply.

Three lives saved in that run. First, the large pup entangled in fishing line. Second, mama with a horrific and painful cut. And lastly, mama’s pup who now won’t starve to death because his injured mother couldn’t get enough nourishment to fed it. Thank you team OCN for all you do to aid the seals. ❤❤❤

You’re right, there’s no excuse whatsoever. If someone is recreationally fishing, fishes to sustain their family, or sells the fish at market to earn a living, there’s no excuse for leaving the line in water or on land. They’re “killing the goose that lays the golden eggs” and harming their own children’s futures. It just doesn’t make sense. The work you’re doing is making a difference, on many levels. Thank you. :)

This makes me rethink all of my past views. I am anti-gun and have never supported activities like recreational hunting. Because fishing poles Are generally used for a single purpose, I have routinely told myself the fishing was the lesser of two evils. Why can't people throw trash (plastics) away properly. It makes my heart ache seeing the painful damage done to the seals. I may joke about tripping and being trampled by seals, because I would love to help but can't, not even financially. So, thank you for the work that you do, that others can't or don't want to do.
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia Ай бұрын
The problem is a bit more complicated: what we throw away does not magically disappear. On the 6 billion tonnes of plastic waste generated since the 1950s, only 9% has been recycled and 12% incinerated. The remaining 79% has been dumped in the wild, much of it ending up in the oceans, torturing and killing millions of marine animals every year. We are unfortunately only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. The goal of these videos is to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.
