Its bad - but maybe not that bad, as the surface flow in the middle of a river is the fastest - flows near the edge and near the bottom are less. There is a fast section shallow and in the middle, and the slowest sections are where the water touches the bed/ bank of the river. But I still reckon you make a good point. SM

Great video and why i always throw my particle baits upstream of were i fish and groundbait balls just slightly upstream of me . I've also noticed that the water on rivers is always slightly faster than the surface and the bottom but at least watching something float past give you some idea of were the bait will land. P.S you've got a new sub. : )

Good point Matt. Thanks for your input, (and the sub). You are quite correct in your comments. There is an element of guesswork in these situations, but at least viewers will now get their hookbaits closer to the main feed area. Tight lines.

its things some don't think of but if I am fishing flowing water l feed upstream and hope the feed is somewhere near or as you say the bait dropper Anyway good vid Den

Thanks Alan. Not knowing the sink rates of different baits when fishing rivers can make a huge difference to how much you catch.

Den I think you should use cage feeder in rivers they might work better than pole and people who are new will also get to know about how you would approach it.

Hi Tawhid. Thanks for your comments. It's nice to see you back on the channel. I agree with you, the use of a cage feeder or method feeder on rivers is easier for beginners because it keeps the feed exactly where your bait is. The purpose of this video was to give people other options which will help to broaden their knowledge, but if they are more comfortable with a feeder, that's fine. It's all about enjoying your day out. However, there are times when using a loosefeeding approach is a better option. For example, I am thinking here of fishing for chub which respond really quickly to loosefeeding using a rod and reel. In these long trotting situations, the chub can rise up in the water to chase your loosefeed as it sinks. Knowing the sink rates of different baits, like maggots for example, helps you to identify the area of your swim where you are most likely to catch them and the depth at which you should fish. Quite often these fish will come up well off the bottom to feed, so if you get it right you can amass a much larger catch than if you used a static bait. I hope this clarifies things.

To be expected with loose feed ground bait. But doesn't a method feeder or other type of feeder avoid this dispersal issue?

You are right about the feeder keeping the bait in a tighter area Bill, but in this video I was covering the use of loosefeed when using a float for trotting down the river, or using a long pole with a float. In the case of the long pole, the loosefeed could be up to 15 or 20 metres past where the float is and therefore taking the fish away from the baited hook. I know you guys in the USA/Canada don't fish in quite the same way as we do so I can understand where you are coming from.

Thats why I use heavy soil, together with ground bait

Distance between 2 telegraph poles is about 45-50m, it cannot be 20m.
@FishingwithDen

The telegraph poles are also a lot further away than where the bait is going in.
