Hi Rodney, I had a friend show up, so I didn't get around to answering your question. Yes, I did see quite a few fish in the Canal this afternoon. Coho of course, they're all over the place right now, but also some chrome springs and some really huge chum. Found a fishing rod in the river and about half an hour later found it's owner fishing down stream. Made me think of all your lost and found stories. Picked up a big pile of lures, I'll make an episode about it soon, but the water was murky for filming.

Good to hear the guy got his rod back! I'm amazed by how many lost items are reported this season so far, and even more amazed how I haven't been able to reunite any of them with the owners. Good to hear that you saw some fish. For some reason the tide didn't push them in that much. I was a bit shocked considering how big that tidal difference is right now.

I was fishing at Vedder river yesterday from noon to sunset and only caught a chinook. A little disappointing at this time of the year. Honsetly I feel much better now seeing you didn't catch any either hahaha. Thank you so much for your videos and website. Yesterday was a tough because it was traditionally the busiest day of the entire year. It's hard to target fish which have already seen everything in the tackle box. I was out with my dad also from Noon to sunset without much success until we finally fished one run in the evening and managed to hook some coho just before dark when the bite turned on. I'm glad to hear that the videos have helped! Thanks for tuning in.

Hi Rod, I went to the canal on Saturday morning first light, it was a lucky trip with many hookups on roe, landed 1 beautiful wild coho about 8lb, took 3 smaller ones home, all happened before 9:30. Went there again today, same spot same time, got bites everywhere, at first light, coho were chasing my roe while I was reeling in, but didn’t set the hook well and missed two bites. Later lost two nice sized fish on spoon within 10 mins ( guess my luck was used up on Saturday), ended up with only one fish to take home.

I don't really use spoons for chinook salmon (even though I did catch one on a 2/5oz orange stripe gold Glory spoon last weekend) because there are just better methods for targeting them. Chinook, and chum salmon, just don't grab spoons as well as coho and pink salmon. Float fishing with roe or beads would work much better for chinook salmon.

Hi Rod. With the water so low can I still cast spoons through water about 2 feet deep that's moving fairly fast? I can't find any deep spots that aren't crowded. I'm assuming that coho aren't going to hold in this type of low water and will just be swimming by. Not sure if they are swimming by often enough for me to just cast in the low water over and over or if I need to actually find a deeper slower moving section

Hi Kevin, yeah if water is quite fast and shallow, then the lures are not going to work. Lately I've actually been targeting coho in 2 to 3 feet of water, but slow, with lures. It worked surprisingly well.

Hi rod, we are coming over from Ireland to fish the vedder at the end of September for two weeks. Is roe allowed at all times? And what species should we expect then?

That's a great time to be on the Vedder. There are several species which you will be able to target. The two main ones will be chinook and coho salmon, and pink salmon may also be available for targeting if stock size is determined to be better than predicted. There isn't a bait ban on the Vedder when it is open, so roe can certainly be used. In the last few seasons I have actually stopped fishing with roe, not so much for ethical reasons but it's just messy and I have found soft beads working just as well now. There are a couple of videos from last year showing how well soft beads work so check those out too. Let me know if you have other questions before you arrive.

It's a no name spoon actually. I bought these spoon blanks (nickel, hammered, tear drop shaped, 1/4oz) many years ago and put a pink prism tape on one side. They have worked pretty awesome over the years.

Whats the difference between spoon and spinner? Do salmon prefer one over the other?

A spoon is just a piece of metal, while a spinner is made of several componen including a blade which rotates around the body of the lure. Both work well, depending on the situation. I tend to use spoons in moving water while spinners in still water. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKqWm6ufqq10iq8

Yeah there was some water blockage for sure, but GoPro audio is just poor in general. We usually have audio recorders as a secondary audio which is synced to all our video clips to get the best quality.

For bait, I use size 1. A lot of people prefer size 2 or 4. For lures, I usually put either size 1 or 1/0 on. That lure is just a regular hammered tear drop spoon, weighed about 1/4oz.

Perry they are all excellent spots which would produce at different times based on the river level and whether it is on the rise or not. Time of the day, weather conditions all play key roles as well. I would focus on these factors rather than locations.

Thanks Bill! Yes I do add a bit of mono on the bottom before spooling it up with the braid. Probably about 1/4 mono, then 3/4 braid.

The two wild coho salmon you saw being released in this video are required to be released by the regulations. Yes, it is mandatory for you to release some species, while other species can be kept. This is to protect the more vulnerable fish stocks while allowing the harvest of sustainable stocks.

Hi Rod, these are gloomis rods right? What model and action would you recommend picking for this spinning setup? I know these can get pricey so I may as well ask your expertise before buying and not knowing any better. Also, are you tying the braid straight to the spoon/spinner or you are using a fluoro leader between the braid and spoon/spinner. Thanks!

Hi Ben! Yes those are G.Loomis E6X rods. Those two rods featured in the video are my favourites for sure. The baitcasting rod is 10' long, rated 10-20lb (I think the new model is rated 10-17lb), really ideal for all salmon species and steelhead. The spinning rod is rated 6-10lb, 9' long, really nice for coho salmon, but too light for chinook and chum salmon. They are pricey for sure, even though they are the "lower end" of the G.Loomis rods. Look into Shimano Clarus as well if the budget is smaller, they also have rods with similar specs like these E6X rods. My braid main is tied to a section of fluorocarbon leader, then the lure.

The Lower Fraser is closed to salmon fishing until early November, and when it reopens to coho and chum salmon fishing, it will most likely be slow so most likely not. I will be doing something along the Fraser later this year though, stay tuned. :)

Hi Rod, great video. How further down is your bait from the weight and the weight from the float?

The length of my leader (from weight to hook) is always around 16 to 18 inches long. Keep it short like that and you'd get a lot more bites. The float depth (from float to weight/hook) varies a bit, depending on how deep the water you are fishing at is. Coho love the 3 to 5 feet depth, so my float depth, length from float to hook, would be around 2.5 to 4ft. You want it to be slightly shorter than the depth of the water.

Yeah the depth adjustment is definitely a challenge and takes awhile to fine tune it. With some practice, you should be able to look at a run and determine roughly how deep it might be. I always tell others to imagine walking all the way out to the depth where you want to fish, will you be completely submerged, or is it waist deep, or chest deep, etc. By judging the depth that way, you can then determine your float depth. I usually start at 3 feet and adjust as I fish. If your float depth is too deep, your float is going to be dragged as it drifts downstream. Being too shallow is always better than being too deep, you'd be surprised by how often coho salmon would swim up the water column to grab something. Watch others around you too. If they are catching fish, pay attention to their depth.

With the speed/current velocity, I always say look for walking speed waters. Of course fish could be caught in faster water, but I'm always looking for that walking speed, 3 to 5 feet of water, with a mix of pebbles and "baby head" sized rocks on the bottom.

The coho salmon fishing can be good until mid November, you can still catch them in late November/early December but will have to be selective on what to keep by then. My favourite time is usually the last two weeks of October and the first week of November.

Sorry I should have clarified that in the video. The tidal difference for the incoming tide that morning was 12 feet, meaning that in the ocean the would have risen 12 feet. In the river, since it is 100km+ upstream from the nearest saltwater, it doens't rise very much, but it does get impacted by the tide. This big tidal change, would push a lot more fish in than a smaller tide.

That was a 1/4oz spoon. It's a tear drop shape spoon, hammered, nickel, with a pink prism tape on one side. I put it together myself after purchasing the spoon blank.
