Like you Kitty, I've been on boats many times too and never knew how to set a downrigger because the captain usually does it. Thanks for the video showing us how it's done!

Cool video. I'm near portland on the lower columbia river. Most guys I see trolling are using 12-16oz weights for and not downriggers. Is there any reason you would use weight over downrigger? Seems like downriggers are way the way to go...
@FishingwithRod4 жыл бұрын
It's unlikely they are trolling with that much weight. Backtrolling perhaps with the current.

Brilliant video.. can you tell me do you use mono or braid on the reels and what strength? Thanks

Thanks for watching! Both can be used. I usually have 25lb test mono spooled on mine.

I was put fishing the ocean here in vancouver over the weekend with a few friends of mine. None of us actually know what were doing but we did manage to get into a few undersized fish and one fish over 29". Now we seen a whole bunch of boats way way off shore and decided to venture out and see if they were fishing for salmon and sure enough they were. Everything i read says you want to aim for water 40-150 feet deep for best trolling. But where everybody was the depth was over 600-800 feet deep. We talked to one boat the made a hand gesture to our question and they had landed 5 keepers. We fish 130-175 feet deep and were catching small fish. What i want to know is how do you judge what depth to fish in water like that and are your trying to always troll with the current because we kept popping our lines out of the clips any time we tried to troll against the current. I am open to any and all information thanks for everyones time.

600-800ft is way too deep. Around Vancouver, you're typically fishing in the depth which you focused on the weekend. A few factors determine success. First would be experience, which you'll gain over time by going out lots. Knowing some commonly productive spots from others and starting at these points, then eventually expanding your areas is how most people end up with consistent results. The depth which you fish in, especially this time of the year, really depends on where the baits are. A good sounder which shows the bait schools is quite important. Marking the baits and the bigger arches (fish) gives you a bit more confidence. Pay attention to the well known guides who are quite active on Instagram and they are always willing to share what spoons, baits, flashers are working at the time. These are all little things, but together they can help a lot. Good luck! :)

Hello jumping speed to go with flashers or dozhirarmi?
@mainetroutwhisperer5 жыл бұрын
What kind of reel is that?
@FishingwithRod5 жыл бұрын
That is what we call a mooching reel on the West Coast. It is a single action reel like a centerpin reel, except the drag is adjustable. The reason we use these reels here rather than a conventional levelwind is for the better fight of the fish. It's just more entertaining and challenging. We're a little weird here. ;)

why are you using the fly rod setup for salmon?? Most people use bait casting setup.
@FishingwithRod6 жыл бұрын
Those aren't fly rod setups. They are mooching rods and reels, specifically designed for trolling on the West Coast. The specs of the rods are pretty similar to the trigger seat rods which you'd use with a baitcaster/levelwind. The reel is a single action centerpin reel with a drag system. Anglers in this region prefer this setup because it makes the fight more engaging and exciting.

Those are not fly rods. They are mooching rods which are specifically designed for this type of fishing, fitted with a single action mooching reel.

Fishing with Rod :can I "mooch" a fishing trip off you?
@koogleyou5575 жыл бұрын
They seem to do this up N. (Im in NCal) they also use a treble. Not allowed here. Every place seems different. I have seen used a long soft med to med fast action rod. By long I mean 10-10 1/2 ft, when fishing kings at river mouths. I tried it and they are really nice. Basically a lot more "giving" as a shock absorber when you have a big salmon on. My 2 boat rods are 7 ft and 8 ft, so I just set my drag really light for those explosive hits and runs then as the salmon tires itself I increase the drag but just barely. I deckhanded and have seen so many fish lost at the boat with that 1 last run they do. It all depends on how you are fishing- downrigger, individual wt release, river in a boat, river from shore.
@MrCool-qi7cy8 жыл бұрын
so basically the boat and rod does the fishing. the fish catches itself. set it and forget it.
@FishingwithRod8 жыл бұрын
Trolling is definitely not as hands-on compared to other fishing technique. While it seems like the boat does all the work, it is in fact very difficult to catch fish consistently without the experience and skills. Knowing the depth where the fish are feeding at during certain time of the year is critical as mentioned in the video. Managing your lines can be a headache if you are running four rods. That's why only a small % of boats out there can produce consistently while others struggle most of the time.

Its a lot of work to run several rods or even two rods on downriggers especially when the fish are biting good. Lots of gear rigging going on.

it's very hands on... lol lets not forget that you're fishing with barbless hooks in California.
