Smallmouth bass were discovered in Chilliwack's Cultus Lake several years ago. The population, which is not endemic in BC, is now quite established and fish can be caught quite regularly between April and October. I spent an afternoon exploring the lake and trying to catch some smallies

Rod, you would enjoy catching the monster smallmouth we have in New York lakes. Average size is anywhere from 2-3 pounds, with some going way more. They give a great fight and are just beautiful organisms.

Thanks for making this video Rod! I definitely agree with your message there at the end. More folks need to realize that: 1) killing invasive fish like bass will not stop them from proliferating - if anything it's incredibly disrespectful to life and terrible sportsmanship. The fact is, once established, there's little that can be done to remove invasives of any sort. 2) bass fishing is an incredibly fun and technical fishery that should be valued and appreciated. Don't ruin the fishery for others by going in and killing every bass you catch. 3) many local waters have actually not seen the terrible detrimental effects forcasted to native species once bass have been established. 4) the reality is that fisheries like bass, crappie, carp, and other invasives are going to become more spread out, it's inevitable - the climate and other environmental factors are making it more favorable for them and other invasives to take a hold. Embrace it folks or miss out is going to be the choice, unfortunately

When I was in there snorkel fishing I saw about 30 bass in 2 hours of swimming around. 95% of them were around 12 inches. Seems to be the most common size. There are also many juveniles around 2" long under all the docks.

Most of the larger specimens have been removed in the last couple of years by the biologists in charge. It takes anywhere from 3 to 6 years for a smallmouth bass to reach 10 to 12” long, so it’s not surprising to see this size class making up majority of the population. It’s a little amazing that the original spawning pairs were never noticed until 2019.

How much area did you cover in those two hours Petr? Hard to tell the density based on just the number of fish observed.

@@FishingwithRod I was a little closer to the campground than you, but not by much. I probably covered 100 meters of shoreline from 10 to 20 feet. Every buoy had a red under it and there were a few scattered in between as well, but overall the density of fish was not great. I was actually surprised you got as many bites as you did.

Hey Rod, you don't have to waste those fish, even when you don't eat them. Donate them to Critter Care Wildlife Refuge on 216th in Langley. They need them to feed the bears and otters and such. I brought them 10 rainbows after my trip to 100 Mile House. Best thing, you don't even clean them.

I knew we had Bass , Crappies and Pumpkin seed sunfish in the Stave river sloughs , I now just found out Silvermere lake has Blue Gill also , so I would think they are in the sloughs between number 7 highway and the Fraser River also

From the regulations: "single hook: a hook having only one point. (In contrast, a treble hook is a hook having three points on a common shaft.) Note: use of a treble hook is permitted unless “single hook” is specified." Single hooks would be all rivers, sloughs and streams, and some posted waters.

I haven't tried it in October yet, usually busy fishing for salmon but I know others have and do well too. I'd think as temperature decreases, these fish will gradually move deeper.

I think they've been around for longer than we think, I got a massive one the other day that was pink tagged. It burped out a big crayfish. I measured it against my marked net at 44.1cm, caught during the last downpour. I believe that would indicate a 8 year old fish. I wish we could check the data on these fish.

Those with a pink tag were tagged in 2020 and 2021. We also encounter some in that 45cm/18in mark, and when they were tagged, they were 15 to 16 inches long, so the growth has been really fast.

Those are Shimano Clarus, 6’6, rated 4-12lb. I love them because they’re so versatile. I use them for jigging for coho and pink salmon, topwater pike fishing, sometimes trout fishing and now dragging tube bait and dropshotting for bass.

Cariboo management has adopted the strategy of closures once bass and perch are found in a particular body as a way to prevent further spreading to other water bodies. It’s also their way to deter people who may think they are creating new fishing opportunities for themselves.

@@FishingwithRod yes, this is true. However, the bass have now made it into the Quesnel River and are spreading to other water bodies. They will pose a threat to our salmon returning to the north which could be detrimental to the future fisheries of sockeye, pinks and Chinook that return to the region. There is no silver bullet to the illegal stocking of the bass. Maybe hired help to eradicate or reduce bass populations in the region might help before too much damage is done. This seems to be working for the goldfish problem in Dragon Lake.

Some docks you can definitely fish from. I believe there are “no fishing” signs at Entrance Bay BC Park’s floating docks. The main beach area at the north end of the lake is best.

What’s the rig for the tube bait? Do you have the weight above the leader?

It's a Carolina rig. The sliding weight is on the main line which falls down to a swivel, followed by around 2 feet of leader then the hook/tubebait.

regular BC fresh water license is needed. Daily limit is 20 and there is no minimum size. There are some lakes where the limit is less, so always check the specific regulations on line.

The derby is discusting, have no part in it. It's a all kill fish derby. Also note bass are protected by a daily limit. You cannot just kill them. It's is illegal to waste your catch if you have no intention to eat them.

Who knows. More likely than not, that a few were released into it a long time ago and recruitment took place over the years as they spawned. If this is the scenario, then it’s also kind of amazing that a few fish could all pair up etc in the same area of a huge water body for this to happen. This certainly makes you speculate if more than a few were introduced and if it took place on several occasions.

magus, anglers are not required to kill invasive species by regulations in British Columbia, for the time being anyway. This is the case because there is a concern that anglers may not be fully informed and end up killing native species which are supposed to be in the watershed.

There should be no bag limits on any non native species in natural public lakes. You want a bass fishery, do it on a separated pond on private property, or if it has to be government managed then at least stick to artificial reservoirs. We need to manage these fish carefully and make sure they don't spread out of control. And I say this as an absolute smally addict! My freezer is full of fish from Shawnigan and Quennel lakes. But I'd happily fish them to local extinction if it's better for our native ecosystem.

Bass (largemouth) have been around in the lower mainland for over 40 years. Smallmouth on Vancouver island for the same amount of time, and over 60 years in osoyoos.

Having people arbitrarily move and stockfish it’s just so ridiculous. I however for sure would keep all those invasive fish. Angler retention can make a massive impact on a reduction in the species. We have limits on fish species to stop anglers from decimating any species. If there are no limits and you keep every Smallmouth bass you catch and so does every other angler you could decimate them on that lake. I did this myself with a lake that had invasive Rockbass. We kept every single one we caught and fished them off their beds in the spring. We went from filling five gallon pails in hours to rarely seeing them anymore. In a short 3/4 years my father and I practically wiped them out in a small lake. All it takes is a community effort a mandate to kill every single one you catch.

you're doing it wrong Rod. first you need a baitcaster with a low profile reel. then you need crankbaits, chatterbaits, or big plastics. then you need Nascar like stripes and logos all over your boat, clothes and hat. then you need to whoop and holler a lot more and say stuff like, 'ya'll gotta check this out'. also, you need to yard those fish outta the lake like you're slinging haybales on the back of a pickup truck.

Again, by removing that one or two fish, it’d in fact promote the growth of the population. Removal of specimens would only have a negative impact on the population when harvest pressure reaches a certain threshold. At this point, it makes no difference because pressure is no where close to that threshold. This isn’t an opinion, it has been determined over time through tests. Just a month ago I was in a lengthy discussion with a group of bios and this is the outcome we’ve all concluded.

You may think it’s right, but by definition in the regulations, it is a waste and in fact a punishable offence. This isn’t just something I am saying because I don’t like it, but it has been discussed numerous times among those who oversee these regulations. Want to kill it, go for it, take it home and eat it.

They need to lean into the bass fisheries here instead of destroying them. Washingston is far more progressive and has established bass fisheries and excellent variety. BC has the potential for trophy bass fisheries if they are managed in a smart way. Coming from Ontario, the attitudes people have here about bass in general are disappointing. Our fisheries are poorly managed. It’s not a coincidence that lakes like osoyoos have record sockeye returns with huge smallmouth populations and our runs keep getting more minuscule by the year (long before smallmouth arrived).

I have to agree, our water just isn't nice for trout anymore. I stopped trout fishing this year and been mostly going for bass, using ultralight and tube jigs, caught a 3lber on a croc though

Invasive species that impact natural species populations' they are not near being endangered' ther should be all out open season' on them.. with no limit on retention' feed them to the eagles'
