INVASIVE? On the hunt for MASSIVE Bass (Cultus Lake)

This episode, I went on a hunt to find an invasive monster smallmouth bass in Cultus Lake BC. This particular species took over the lake which affected the whole dynamic of the ecosystem in this lake for other native species. This is how it all went down...

Great video, but let's be honest-fishing at Cultus Lake is pretty slow year-round. I'm a local, and I've been fishing at Cultus Lake for 10 years, but I've never caught a trout. Yes, I've caught pike, sculpins, and, of course, tons of bass. Bass is what currently attracts people to the lake for fishing and fun, and most of the time, it's catch and release. I don't really believe that they have a huge impact. I've fished all over BC, and in some areas, largemouth bass coexist with other species like sunfish and catfish in much smaller lakes, and they all survive. As you mentioned, Cultus Lake is massive, and different fish species live in different parts of the lake, at varying depths and temperatures

ive seen a few spots in that lake around 400+ ft deep i just cant get over how deep it is so close to shore some spots youre 15 20 ftt from shore and its 150ft

If you google invasive species trout and bass are 9 spots apart. The bass coexist with other species in lakes such as osoyoos, vaseux, skaha, and Christina.

Took me a while to learn there's a very nuanced difference between something being "invasive" as opposed to simply "introduced". As long as they don't get out of control and start expanding range or out-competing native species (which bass in BC don't typically do) it's not accurate to call them invasive. We have lakes here on the island where smallmouth have been successfully managed along with their native counterparts, but watersheds like Cultus and the Brunette River will be the real test cases. And they kill off the endangered Cultus sculpin or start spreading uncontrolled through the Fraser, then it's too late anyway.
