Excellent video! I’ve just bought a job boat with nothing set up in it at all. I will be mounting 2 anchor locks to the boat. The one thing I haven’t decided is if I want to drill through my boat for the rod holder mounts. So… clamp on or side mount (which means drilling) I noticed your clamp ons are very sturdy. What model of Scotty are they? I have the same round top rail, so I may go with clamp on now! Thanks for the video! Great info!
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've explored quite a few different options for mounting my rod holders and cameras etc, and in the end the coaming gunnel clamp mounts are still the best options for me. The model number on Scotty's website is 433. The only down side is that I find myself spending a bit of time screwing those on at the start of the day, then taking them off in the end. Not a huge deal but bit of a hassle especially tired after fishing all day. Since my boat goes up on top of the truck, everything has to come off so this is the best arrangement I can think of right now.

@FishingwithRod5 жыл бұрын
It's definitely quite heavy, not for lifting by yourself. Your only way of transporting it alone is either by a trailer, or on a electric boat loader which is what I have. This boat is ideal for two people, and can accommodate up to three people. If you are just by yourself, a G3 1036 (basically the 10' version of this) would be more ideal.

It's from Home Depot! :) If you go to the outdoor carpet section, you'll see quite a few different options available. They come in these huge rolls (20ft wide I think), and you just ask them to cut you a piece. I think I got 6ft X 20ft for the two floors. Use carpet glue and it'll stay on forever, and staple on the back side of the edges. You can also waterproof it by applying some kind of spray so it lasts longer but I didn't bother since I rarely fish in the rain.

Here is a good video to see how stable it is, at one point I was running all along the edge of the boat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5fcqYSYnr2jmNE That said, I am only 130lb, so it also depends on your weight. If you're concerned about stability, there is also the 1448 which is REALLY stable, but that boat would have to go on a trailer instead of on top of the truck like what I do with this 1442.

Rod can you give some idea how you build the Jon Boat floor, fixing to build one for my Jon Boat. Thanks
@FishingwithRod4 жыл бұрын
So for the Jon boat floors, I'm actually not very handy at all and found it not too difficult to do this. I first use cardboards and cut them to fit onto the boat floor. I then measured the cardboards to get the dimensions, and asked the shop to cut two pieces of plywood with the dimensions given. You'd need to do some additional cutting for the sides to make them fit. For the back piece, it can just go into it as it is. The front piece needs two pieces of 2X4 on the bottom to elevate some more so it can be leveled. For carpet, I just headed to Home Depot and looked for the outdoor carpet options. I glued the carpets on, and waterproofed them.

Hi Rod, i just got a brand new boat. 1448 G3. Really similar to yours but a bit wider. I am thinking about using the flush mount anchor lock bases because i want to put a tarp over the bot and i don’t want the regular base stick up to much and possibly damage the cover. Did you ever consider using them on the front or you think they wouldn’t fit under the front “lip”? I’d hate to buy one just to find out that I can’t use them. Thanks Rod
@FishingwithRod4 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the buy! 1448 is so much wider than my 1442. From what I remember, the flush mount can fit on that front lip, but you may need to file off a bit of the bottom of that mount. I chose the regular base mostly because I'm not that handy, and didn't want to do the cutting of the front lip to fit that flush mount.
@vancityflyguy4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Rod. Yes, the 1448 is a monster:) so much bigger than my previous 1436. I don’t mind filing it down, hopefully it won’t weaken the mounts. @FishingwithRod9 жыл бұрын
+Mark H Thanks! You can get these jon boats from any Yamaha G3 dealers. Mine is from GA Checkpoint in Abbotsford, British Columbia. With the trolling motor, mine is 55lb thrust and that's adequate enough for me to travel from point A to B in a small lake. It is a trolling motor after all so it doesn't go super fast, and I am not in a hurry usually so that's fast enough for me. The battery life depends on its size. Mine can run the motor for a day, which involves going from point to point, and anchoring at spots for a few hours at a time. I would say up to 1 hour total at full cruising speed.

Hey I'm looking at the same boat. Just curious how easy is it for you and another person to lift and carry that boat?
@FishingwithRod3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jarrett, I can't speak for everyone as I am only 130lb, so is my wife, so it is impossible for both of us to lets say flip the boat and put it on top of the truck, but carrying it briefly on the ground to the water is doable for us. I sometimes even drag the boat zig zagging to the water. We have an electric boat loader which lifts the boat to the top of the truck, and I can lower it into the water by pressing a button. It's the perfect size boat for two or even three people, and getting to less accessible lakes where the boat needs to be on the roof of the truck.
@JLRacing173 жыл бұрын
@@FishingwithRod wow that was a fast response ! Ok thanks love the videos by the way! I'm 230 lbs form ontario looking for a boat me and my friends could take out in a few small lakes and rivers with no launch. And about a 50 foot walk with the boat. I like I wide this one is over the 1436.

@@JLRacing17 Yeah you two should have no problem carrying 50ft to the water. One challenge I've always had while carrying on the ground is that the two handles on the transom side are quite far apart for me, so I have a problem with grabbing onto both to carry. My arms are too short for that, but probably not the issue for others. The biggest challenge is definitely getting it from the truck top to the ground and back up. If you can work out a system to do that with the buddy, then you are good to go!

Very informative and well put together video .. you have a very nice boat setup .. I just recently bought my first aluminum fishing boat and I have concerns about mounting the seat to the bench like you did .. what did you use for anchors in the aluminum bench so did the swivel would not pull out ?
@FishingwithRod4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The anchors I used are: www.homedepot.ca/product/paulin-papc-8-32-thread-sert-kits/1000162982 I don't consider these as heavy duty anchors and the aluminum on the bench is less than a cm thick so over time the screws will try to wiggle out on their own. That said, after 5 years the anchors are still holding on very well and I've only had two screws that came a bit loose at some point, they were fine once I tightened them up again. I also recommend that you don't lean back in your seat too much or too often so you're not putting too much pressure on those screws and anchors.
@TattooBull4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about getting some type of board that would fit the entire bench front to back side to side .. then screw about 8 screws through the board , 4 across the back and forth across the front side .. use these anchors to mount the board to the aluminum bench .. then mount my swivel and chair to the board .. I think this would make it a lot more stable for leaning back in the chair .. plus I would be able to mount my fish finder and other things to the board next to the chair

I've recently purchased a 14' AlumaCraft Jon boat and want to install seats onto the benches as you have done on your boat. I weigh approximately 200 lbs and I'm curious to know if I should mount directly into the aluminum bench or would it be better to install a piece of plywood onto the benches and mount the seats to them. Do you have any recommendations as to the best way to do this with my weight taken into consideration?
@FishingwithRod8 жыл бұрын
Personally I think it wouldn't make much difference structurally if you put a plywood in between the bench and the mount. With the anchors that I've used for screwing the mount onto the bench, they have been very strong and we've had people around your weight sitting on them too. The anchors I use are called "Papc Thread-Sert Kits". If you Google it and it should pop up first on the Home Depot's website.

I'm looking at the same trolling motor, is it enough power for that size boat and how long will your battery go before it needs recharging
@FishingwithRod7 жыл бұрын
The 55lb thrust Minn Kota is strong enough to push this G3 1442 Jon boat and get you from point A to point B in a small lake. It's not ideal in bigger lakes where you may face challenges like wind and waves. For me, I like it simply because I enjoy fishing small lakes, am not in a hurry usually and enjoy the silence of an electric motor. How long the battery power lasts depends on the size of the battery and how fast you choose to go. I am usually fine with just one battery for the day outing.
@mr.fatbasstard6487 жыл бұрын
Aslmx make sure you get the variable speed. 5-speeds are terrible on amp usage and battery life.
@aslmx83207 жыл бұрын
+Mr. FatBasstard What model number would that be?
@mr.fatbasstard6487 жыл бұрын
Aslmx the Minn Kota Endura C2 55# comes in a 12volt variable speed. I believe the shafts also go up to 48 inches. You should consider the type of fishing and where you fish carefully before you make a purchase for your boat. I'm guessing you want a transom mount and a 12 volt like Rod's motor. If you do a lot of trolling you're stuck with the 5 fixed speed settings with a 5 speed motor. If you go with a 12-volt motor and troll a lot you're lucky to get a days worth of fishing on rough or windy days. Make sure you get a real trolling motor battery too, they are helpful but very expensive. $150-$200+ but they will save you money in the long run on battery life and charging.... good luck and happy fishing.

+Mr. FatBasstard I have a bow mount already. I'm on a 10hp limited lake. Maybe 300 acres. I have the largest ever start marine available. I want to go all electric. I get tired of the up keep of a gas engine and I don't fish enough to justify one.

I am looking at a Tracker 1036 and it would only be me and one of my 16 year olds or me and my wife. I am worried that the 10 footer is not stable. Only using on small electric motor only lakes and ponds. Whats your thoughts on this?
@FishingwithRod8 жыл бұрын
+David Godinez The length is not an issue, I've had a 10ft boat before this and sometimes even fished with three people in it. It's the 36in width that you should be concerned about, depending on how much you weigh. The side stability can be an issue especially if the water is choppy, when you are leaning over for the fish etc.
@dougschieppe75337 жыл бұрын
is that a 36 or 40 inch trolling motor shaft length?
@FishingwithRod6 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't remember. My guess is 36.

Hi Rod I am new just watched your boat tour video i am actually trying to find a boat for me and my family this looks like a perfect starting boat can you stand up safely in thins boat and fish or does it seem kinda wobbely ?
@FishingwithRod8 жыл бұрын
We've fly fished it with two people standing up and casting without any issue even if the lake has a bit of chop on it. Having a leveled floor like we've done in this video makes a big difference on stability when standing up. This boat is ideal with either two people who want to stand freely, or three people sitting down. If you have more than one kid who likes to run around in it, then there are bigger and wider options as well, such as 1648 or 1652, but these have to be on a trailer instead of on top of the truck.

Where can I get that Scotty mount that can mount through that hole on the side of the Jon boat? I have never see one like that (around 9:45 in the video)
@FishingwithRod8 жыл бұрын
Any marine stores should carry them and if they don't have them, get them to order some. On Scotty's website there is also a page which lists their dealers (very right in the top menu bar). If that also doesn't work, you should post the same question on their Facebook page, the person who manages that page is very good at replying to their customers' Qs. :)

+Fishing with Rod but on their site I can't find that particular mount that will let me go through the hole. I guess I will have to check with their sales rep then ... Thanks (by any chance you know what that part is called?)
@FishingwithRod8 жыл бұрын
That's an oarlock mount. It's on their rod holders and mounts page. If you scroll down on the page to the "rod holder mounts" section, you should be able to see it.

Does the trolling motor kills the battery or does it charges it as well when you use it and I like the vids
@FishingwithRod7 жыл бұрын
The battery indeed has a life span. How long it lasts depends on its size, and how fast you are going. If you are going full speed with the electric motor, it'd be around 1 hour, maybe less.

what kind of screws did you use to mount your seat bases. i don't have acces to underneath mine on my 1542 topper jon.
@FishingwithRod7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, because the aluminum on the bench is pretty thin, you cannot just screw the mount in directly without anchors. I use these as anchors in the bench: www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.papc-8-32-thread-sert-kits.1000162982.html I got mine from Home Depot. These also come in different sizes so make sure you use the right one for the screws you want to use. Once the nuts are anchored in the bench, they are pretty secured and cannot come out, at least they haven't on mine.

With this setup, you'd block the boat ramp for an excessive amount of time. Good way to piss people off waiting for you. However the mechanized roof winch is awesome.
@FishingwithRod7 жыл бұрын
Vic Terraglia That's one disadvantage and it is up to the user to be considerate. I don't use busy boat launches for this very reason, and will unload the boat quickly at the launch, bring the boat to the nearby beach and set everything up so I don't take up the space.

Tried to check their factory price but they do not have them listed. They send you to a dealer and the dealer wants to much information to just let you know how much it costs. Sorry but I will spend my money with a company that has prices posted and does not want all my phone numbers, mailing address etc. They have more respect from me as a researching customer then a company who hides prices so they can use sales pitch's and spam mail. other then that not a bad video... But you would have a lot more time fishing, and probably spend about the same money if yo spent $300 bucks and bought a trailer..
