I'm not expert at it for sure but over the year I have figure out my own style or system to avoid the tangles. Maybe I'll show it in front of the camera this season. Once it gets over 20ft, it's better to just switch over to a fast sinking line and "deep lining" instead. Or do what I like to do, just use a conventional gear and drop the fly straight down with a sliding weight rig like what we did last spring: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoTbqKuja7GbjNE

Thanks Andy. The peg of these quick release strike indicators are threaded onto the line too, so it just slides down with the indicator on the line once they come apart.

Hi Rod, love your videos, been watching you for a few years now. One question if you ever read comments on two year old vids. Where do you find the self tripping strike indicators? I live in Chilliwack and I've tried Fred's tackle but they don't carry them.

Rod...Are some of the interior stocked lakes also populated with wild strains? If so, is there a way to know if a lake was sterile before it was stocked, and which lakes contain a 'mix' of wild and stocked trout?

I didn't think of putting on a swivel. What size would work for that. Also would a snap swivel work to switch out tippets with different flies?

You could probably do that, which would save some time on tying new flies etc. You'd need a snap swivel, and each tippet would have its own swivel to connect to that snap swivel, so the only problem I see is that the hardware chain becomes longer and that may affect the casting. If the goal is just to catch fish, I'd say go for it, whatever works. I use swivels that are as small as possible. I use size 12.

The entire leader + tippet is 20 to 25ft max. You do whatever works for you to get it out there, it’s actually a lot easier than you may think.

Quick question. Why not just use a 6 pound leader? Then you wouldn't have to use swivel and tipet

A lengthy answer for a quick question. 😉 There are three reasons. One is that 6lb test leader is a lot harder to cast with than 12lb test leader at the end of the fly line, especially if it is 20 feet+. Beacuse you're pegging the indicator to the leader, you want something a bit thicker to avoid any abrasion which may lead to the line snapping. Lastly, the tippet isn't always 6lb test. Sometimes you have to switch to 8, or 10lb test if you are fishing in lakes where you have the potential of encountering much bigger fish.

I'm confused about casting and the float stopper catching the eyes of the rod. How do you cast if your float stopper is at 15 or 20 feet up your line? Thanks

When you are casting, your entire leader (20 feet or so) has to be out of all the guides and a bit of the fly line will also be out as well. If not, you're no going to be able to cast the fly line out. Having 20 or so feet of line hanging out makes casting a lot more challenging for sure, and there are different tricks to manage that. We'll try to show that in another video.

Hey rod! Thanks for the vid! Why are you using a swivel instead of a knot like double surgeons to connect leader and tippet? Isn't the swivel making it harder to cast and more risk to tangle in the air? The only positive I'd see would be to prep flies on one end, loop knot on the other end, and use snap swivel for easier shift from a fly to the other But I'm a Newby so I'd love your opinion haha

Yep you could also do that especially if you are using a short leader with a fixed indicator fishing in the shallows. There are two reasons that the swivel is used. One is so it prevents the indicator from sliding all the way down to the fly once it pops off while fighting a fish. Second is it acts as a tiny weight to get the fly down if you are fishing in 20ft of water. Sometimes we even add a little splitshot to just above the swivel. If the hatch is heavy and bite is on, you don't want to spend too much time waiting for the fly to reach the strike zone.

I don't know actually. It's a pretty generic quick release one that I see everywhere and I usually just pick them from the bulk box at the store.

@@FishingwithRod I’d prefer it to fit through the eyelet, so you can fully rig up the reel with the leader and tippet. To store it that way so when you get to the lake you only have to put your reel on your rod and off you go.

There isn't any huge advantage really. Once it gets over 20ft deep, usually we switch to fly fishing with a fast sinking line, or just use spinning/baitcasting setups and drop the fly straight down. In fact, your depth control is probably better with this method than the indicator, because there's fair amount of swinging when the leader is that long if there's a bit of breeze or current. What fly would you use in the same area in a Midsummer?

Chironomid patterns can still work in some lakes in the same area throughout the summer months. Take Tunkwa Lake for example, late July and early August there usually is a hatch of bigger chironomids known as bombers. Blood worms can be great too. There also could be mayfly and sedge hatches.

That depends on where you are fishing. In BC, the tandem fly setup is in fact illegal, only one fly/hook is allowed on the line. :)

I would suggest if you don't mind Rod !! That people get what they can afford at the time they are interested . Learn the ART of Fly Fishing , Fly Tying and if your really Liking it go with the more pricey rigs. Read , watch and learn the Sport , efficiency comes with lots of practice . It does take patience , observation , research and lots of time on the water (that's the sweet part ) !

Yep the beauty of fly fishing is that you don't necessarily need to spend a lot of money to get started. More expensive or better gear can make it easier, but people can work their way up as they get more into it.

lol my bad, it can be quite a pricy investment, but I do believe you can get started pretty cheaply. An entry level fly rod and reel plus floating line can be purchased for a couple hundred dollars, sometimes even less. That's how I started too. They may not perform as well but can do the job.

Don't forget folks . These are not meant to cast from shore unless it's a beautiful sandy beach . Most lakes in BC are lined with trees and brush causing snags in the trees and bush . Not fun. My setup is 1 x $150. rod and reel $120. on a decent float line . $500. pontoon boat and waiters ,fins. $250. on a decent Mustang vest life jacket . Or my go to machine is my 14 foot aluminum boat and motor $5000. What's in your wallet : )

I'd just add that if people don't have a boat, they could try to do this on one of the floating docks which have been set up around Merritt and Kamloops (featured in the latest video). I'd say you can easily fly fish with the indicator from the dock at Marquart, Lodgepole, Stake, Edith.
