Couldn’t agree more. I’m a technology nut and I keep changing lights, skimmers, pumps equipment on my tank and every crash can be tied back to one of those changes. One of these days I’ll learn my lesson.

Spot on Advice! Start simple then add complexity based on the tanks needs. PH is a hotly debated topic though but the general consensus is that for reef tanks between 8 and 8.4 is ideal. I can't get my tank to maintain above 8PH and it drives me crazy. Wish I would have started with a Kalk reactor now I don't have room in my sump without a major overhaul.

I found that stability is everything. Even if parameters are low on somethings it seems to me not to be a big issue. The main concern is giving a steady supply to your corals. So even if alk or calcium is not where you want it, giving a steady supply and maintaining that parameter for long stability is the way to go as the coral is still just consuming as much as you are supplying.

I have had a few things go wrong recently. Ive had my 60 gal tank for three years. About a year and a half ago I had a pipe burst in the house. Had to move my aquarium in order to redo the floors. Despite my best efforts I lost all of my coral. After a few months I finally got my water parameters back in line only to have a break put of ick. Chalking it up to a blonde moment as I dosed my tank for ick but forgot to remove the filtration. Lost almost all of my fish before realizing my error. Waited 3 months before adding new fish. Was heart broken over the losses but decided to forge ahead. Bought a few fish, waited another 6 months before buying any coral. A couple of weeks ago I wemt and bought a bunch of coral. Got a duncan, acan, scoly, brain maze, toadstool and a zoa. I had rearranged all of my live rock and cleaned the sand bed well before pitting them in. Back when replenshing fish I had bought two four line damsels. I had done research and new there was a great chance of them bullying fish bit they were reef safe from the research i saw. From cleaning my sand bed I did have a huge Nitrate and Phos jump. Did major water changes in effort to get the numbers back down. However i started noticing the duncan looked munched on, then the brain. Thought it was water issues, did even more water changes. Added a HOB refugium, dosed my tank with calcium even though my levels were already high. Dosed zooanthellae as it seemed the brain maze dumped all of its at once. Continued daily water changes. Watched the two of them die. Then the scoly....then the zoa....and finally one morning caught those two damsels eating the acan. So frusterating. Am cycling a new home for them as I write this.....your video today reminded me to keep it simple. I went through so mucj convinced there was something wrong with my water even though my numbers looked good or at least sufficient. Next time i will remeber to trust the numbers and look for other issues. Thanks for all of your great videos!

I have a question about skimmers. i have a nano tank with a AIO (just over 30gal). I have a hang on acrylic box that has around 3 gal for refugium with an super bright white light, because of this i have little algae other than bryopsis cuz i found them efficient at sucking nutrients even at slightly lower nitrates. The question is im wondering why my skimmer no longer forms foam all the time. It only does it after feeding and cleaning rocks with turkey baster. Why is it? the skimmer is rated for 85gal or something i think.

A bit of a odd question; I recently got my first acro, and I had a small problem with it which is that I needed a second light (AI Prime HD) since I upgraded my tank to a custom longer tank. It sat in the slight shade for a while (a few days at most) and it turned brown. I’ve moved it to a Frag Rack much closer to the lights and shall be gluing it right under the center of my prime. The water level is 12” high, with approx 5-6” distance between the water and the light. But back to the question, as this is apparently a simple acro; what is the recovery time that I should expect? Meaning when it’s going to get it’s colour back. Like an average that you may have seen. I’m okay with waiting, and I do have a maxima clam that I’ve had for almost a year now (this month a year) and it’s doing fantastic purely under my lights with rare dosing of little amounts of phyto. I also have a second quick question: Having a lid on a DT except the sump, with the sump being in an enclosed area with some holes, how much would I would benefit by adding a simple computer fan to aerate the sump from carbon and such? I’ve always believed to have good surface agitation, but like you say it depends on my own setup. I’m planning on soldering a simple fan to a plug to help out if it’s worth it. Thanks for reading, and I very much appreciate all the videos you’ve been coming out with. I know that’s a bit of a lengthy question but honestly, I’m good with simple responses and it isn’t a big issue at all.

I've read a lot that having a skimmer that exceeds its rating complicates the matter (BRS mentions this, as does gmac reef and others). I guess it can be harder to reach and maintain an optimal water level in the sump. Thoughts/clarifications on this?

From my own experiences, as a newbie 8 years ago, if I wanted a thriving sps tank, I was going to learn how to do it from the vast information on the web. Nowadays, I reflect on this and think how much misinformation and sales gimmicks there are in the hobby. "Yes, buy gfo b/c phosphates are bad", "Yes, buy trace elements to increase colors", "Yes, buy, buy, buy". I never really once stepped back and asked myself, hey is all this crap I'm buying actually making a difference? I never went a few months without adding some new equipment, element, light schedule, or another little tweak to my tank. In other words, I was never going to succeed in growing sps because I was trying to apply all these methods which seemed to work for others (Parameters, shooting for numbers, lights, ect...) Now I am on the verge of a full blown acropora frag system because I learned to stick to one method and follow up with maintenance religiously. This means, keep things stable for a few months before adding anything, get lights, set up and forget about them, do weekly water changes, change filter pads twice a week, clean skimmer as needed, and keep hands out of water. That's it, nothing special to it besides testing occasionally to make sure things are maintained stable.

One thing I should have done differently starting out I think (theory) is consider trophic levels and build up slooowly. Instead of +substrate/cycle/+fish/+cuc/+coral, maybe +pods b4 any fish/coral and get those cultures flourishing! Let the algae-cyano do whatever while micro fauna takes over, all while keeping alk/CA stable. Than eventually, when you just can't wait any longer..add the fish/coral.
