as an ex rings gymnast (a very mediocre one) and occasional climber, I believe this is one of the few challenges I could still make Magnus actually impressed, even thou for the last 10 years, my training has been solely an intensive beer can grip and the "banana peeling". xD Joint hypermobility (exacerbated in gymnasts) helps not feeling elbow pain afterwards, and the muscle memory of activating the proper muscles, as well as the psychological training of enduring the fatigue of certain muscles, can be as important if not even slightly more important than pure simple physical fitness. The proper way to grip this depends more on your grip size. Generally, stretched arms is the way to go; what fails is the grip, which will fail sooner the less oxygenated blood gets there. A flexed arm posture will not only use oxygenated blood flow before it reaches your hands, it will also constrict its flow. Unless you're someone training callisthenics and have conditioned your muscles to withstand catabolic functioning, you will hang longer the more oxygenated blood flow you can get up to your wrist. I'd try with stretched arms, legs in half-lotus, and opposite thumb grip (big hands), as so to basically have as little muscle activation but on my arms\forearms. I'd wager i can manage 45 seconds. I'm definitely gonna go visit my former gymnasium and ask my coach just to try this 🤣
@kjfurr Жыл бұрын
Any updates if you tried the challenge?
@rrs_13 Жыл бұрын
@@kjfurr I didnt untill I saw your comment. I completely forgot about this, so thank you for reminding me! =D I went to the gymnasium, did 1:12, and I actually really really amazed myself!!! First try, no warm-up, jeans and sweater. I'm currently veeery out of shape (I'm about 1.75m weighing 55kg), still recovering from a health issue, and looking myself in the mirror and seeing a "skeleton" has been really depressing and a motivation killer to start working hard on my physique and try to get back to a decent fitness level. Simply trying this has been such a huge motivation, I can't even put it into words. IDC if you are some average guy or Jason from Friday 13 in real life, but your simple comment reminding me to try this was like a.. life saver (I hate this cliche expression, but I can't find a better one). I ended up monkeying around the double-mini to see if I still got it, and now I'm here with every muscle and joint sore, but I can't remember being this "hopeful" and happy towards myself in a long time. Really, and I mean it. Thank you. EDIT: At my peak form I was a little over 70kg with 5~8% body fat. It makes it extra hard to look at myself in the mirror now, and I've never been this out of shape in my life, so it's hard to find motivation past the "shame" I feel. Thank you again man.
@kjfurr Жыл бұрын
@@rrs_13 I'm so glad you attempted it, and better still that you beat a minute. I would never come close. I am sure it is hard going from being really in shape to not so much, but take one day at a time. I never was much of anything, and at my age, 46, and self destructing body I never will be, but I stay in decent enough shape to turn a few heads. Mainly, I want to stay healthy for my children until I'm 70ish. Walking is probably the best thing I do to stay in shape. 3-5 miles in an hour to hour and a half 3 or 4 days a week. The gym 2 or 3 times a week as my body allows keeps me 170-180 at 5'7". My diet could be much cleaner, but that weight range allows me some leeway and helps me keep some bulk to not feel like a weakling. My goal is to not be injured and don't chase past glory (remember I stated I was never much special so it is easy) and just stay active. I push myself in the gym, but nowadays it is 4-5 sets of each body part and I'll never go back to one body part a day doing sets until I couldn't do anymore. Let any guilt go. Dad bods are loved after all. Skeletons are good too, and you can build from there as health permits. If you aren't at a gym go for it and just start very slow with high reps and low weights. I barely use free weights and stick to the machines. I think going will make you happy and more motivated. Keep me updated here if you get back into it. You probably have so much functional strength, you could just do body weight exercises at home. I am too lazy to do anything at home, so that is why I need the gym membership. Good luck and no matter what happens stay positive.
@sportsentertained Жыл бұрын
@@rrs_13 Great job! I'm curious if you used similar grip devices that are shown in this video though. They're quite thick and they also rotate, which I guess would make one's grip fail even faster than a standard ring.
@rrs_13 Жыл бұрын
@@sportsentertained That's why I went back to my former gymnasium, to use these rolling grip thingamajigs; hanging from a regular bar fairly easier than this. I did however have it set up high enough so I didnt have to bear this whilst bending my elbows. Maybe that's an unfair advantage? :\ I also have frigging big hands and long fingers (people used to say I should play the bass), and looking at Magnus in this video, my grip is substantially bigger, as in I could almost touch my index with my thumb. I can only ballpark the thickness of the things they used in this video, but it seemed pretty much the same. IDK. Maybe the way I did it makes it not proper to compare it with this challenge, but I don't really care. I'm not competing versus Magnus nor anyone else, just against my biggest enemy: pessimistic me. And each time I do something to counter that douchebag doppleganger of mine, I'm winning vs him.

thumb over is always better for static hanging. I've tried both ways so many times it never fails to be better than thumb gripping. My theory is that using your thumb engages ALL the rest of your musles in your hand, wrists and forearms leading to lactic acid buildup much much faster whereas just throwing your fingers over the top allows a much more relaxed hang. Its like carpeltunnel/tendonitis. Those disorders really flare up and hurt when you engage the thumb because of the tension and strength it requires. At least for my mom. Not sure if that is really common but it would make sense to me
@durabelle Жыл бұрын
That looks crazy hard, respect to all who managed even half the time! As a woman with small hands I'd struggle to hold on at all even though I've done some climbing. Would be interesting to try a much smaller rolling handle though to get an idea of how much it differs from a fixed bar.
@kft4764 Жыл бұрын
