My mistakes, oh boy (In no specific order) 1) bought a wrx 2) changed the wheels and accidentally drove on hand tightened lugs which shot off like a rocket as I was going 20mph down my street. 3) I had an eBay hub loosen up at a drift event, torque everything down properly gentlemen 4) plastidipped parts with zero prep work or cleaning before hand 5) thought 40k springs and shocks would be good for racing (more stiff= less body roll?) that sucked 6) thought I could vinyl wrap a car by myself and it would look perfect (overstretched everything and it was pretty bad) 7) bought a Miata and slapped on some hella stretched tires and went autocrossing (195 on a 9” rim, fitmint was still trash, got weird looks and tech thought I might debead) 8) didn’t realize you have to switch cam and crank gears on a JDM EJ205 motor to make it work with your USDM ECU (yeah it took me over a year to swap this motor) 9) 3k miles later blew the 02 wrx Subaru trans because I clutch dropped at like 5k rpms 10) dropped the oil drain bolt in my oil bucket pan thing which cloggged it and spilt hot oil all over my garage 11) I have defiantly open the rad cap while it was way too hot 12) did a track day on bald, 300 treadware all seasons at 40psi 13) took me 15 hours to 6 speed swap my miata and we finished late so I forgot to fully tighten a ppf bolt which dropped out and snapped as I was going 50mph, shot sparks everywhere lol I thought I ran over a chain 14) I had my starter go out on my only vehicle at the time and thought I could just clutch start it everywhere, got stuck multiple times. Learn from me, don’t make the stupid mistakes I do

I bought a 1988 Camaro IROC-Z that was carburetor swapped, had no ECU, No cats or mufflers, and had a little bit of rust forming. At 17 years old I thought I could fix it. @maxf80995 жыл бұрын
Lee Seiler why was it a mistake? Rx-8 is on my list for first cars (im 17), why shouldnt i buy it?
@blkSabbathSE3P5 жыл бұрын
Basically, no car will be a mistake if you do your homework. I'll say that out front. If you know what you're going into, and you have a better understanding of what common problems with the car are, you'll be better set. Look on forums, try and find someone in your community who has one and just pick their brains about the car. I love my RX8, I dont drive it super hard and if I do it's only for a short time and on roads I know and am comfortable on. Below is some stuff I've found online and my own experience with the car. (04 RX8, JM1FE) Being a rotary engine, you'll come across a different maintenance schedule than most traditional piston motors. Plan on adding a bunch of oil, (I always carry a few extra quarts to top off) spending $20-$30 per spark plug every 15k miles, (and also paying attention that you are buying leading AND trailing plugs for each rotor, I just changed mine yesterday and the previous owner had 4 leading plugs in there). Another issue, at least for the series 1 (04-08) is the starter, it doesn't like to start hot. Another issue I just had (maybe related to the starter, or poor compression or a combo of both) was I was on the highway, waiting to pull across in the middle lane turn off. I decided to try and beat a tractor trailer, and being new to driving stick, I stalled it. No biggie, I've stalled before, I'll just wait for the next red light to stop traffic. Well my car wouldn't even crank. I would turn the key and the dash lights were so faint, the brake was sunk to the floor. I had no idea what happened. I got lucky and someone helped push it off the road, go pulled into a parking lot, and looked over the car. Didnt really see anything, so I decided to try starting it up after going inside the store and letting the car (and my head) cool down. After about 5 seconds of cranking it finally took and I was able to finish about my business, no issues at all. Back to the oil topic, premixing is a big thing people generally talk about. I don't, but that might be why I had that issue. I'm not sure, I've only had the car a month lol.

a while back, me and my buddy tried to swap an alternator on his mk4 jetta. we were both around 15/16 years old and it was his first car, so needless to say we had pretty much never done anything mechanical on a vehicle before. we tried EVERYTHING to get the belt off of the alternator, we tried pulling the belt off with brute force, adding leverage, we even tried removing the tensioner but it wouldnt budge. took us about 3 hours before we looked it up and realized the tensioner is spring loaded... there was even a small tab on the tensioner where you use a wrench of some kind to pull it back so the belt can come off 😂 swapped out the alternator, put the belt back on and everything worked great. it was definitely a learning experience to say the least

Doing a tire rotation at home as we have a small lift and my friends that were over told me they’d finish it for me so I could go eat, figured oh that’s fine they’re smart they know what they’re doing. Turns out they only hand tightened all the lugs, no torque. Worst part was we went on a long cruise right after. Safe to say going 80mph on the highway with hand tightened wheels is not a fun experience. Thankfully had my spare tire kit in my car so as soon as I knew what was going on I pulled over and tightened all my wheels down before I could be home to re torque them down...always double check everyone people.

The biggest mistake I see people make is not changing fluids often enough, people tend to change the oil somewhat regularly but not changing the coolant can start to cause issues after a while. The biggest mistake I have made is ignoring brake noises on my last car, instead of doing a brake job right away I decided to wait a few weeks which caused my wheels to get a nice coating of metal which rusted and I was never able to get that off of the wheels. So now if I hear brake noises I check it out right away.

my rookie mistake was draining all my oil out then couldn’t get the oil filter off and i didn’t wanna reuse the filter so i had to push my brothers car into a parking lot then buy a oil filter remover tool

My first car mistake: Buying a VW and not doing bags and wheels first. Went fbo and got it tuned just for the trans to blow up. Pretty sure the car just wanted to kill itself for having monster truck fitment on the stock wheels for so long.

Buying a 1999 Camaro as a project car that barely ran as I’ve never worked on a car before in my life other than an oil change.

I chose a Japanese gm mix to start to learn how to work on vehicles. Big leap forward but man I've made some fun mistakes and learned alot.

Rookie mistake: doing a valve adjustment on my e30 after semi paying attention to a video 2: trying to boost my e30 with 1k and 3 weeks before an event (car didnt make it amd now I cant diag the damn thing to start?

A good one. I was changing my break calipers, and turned the bolt for my caliper the wrong way with a breaker bar and stripped it completely. Worst part is it’s one of those gm flush mounted Allen bolts.

Some of my rookie mistakes: Not changing drag plug gasket on audi - oil everywhere Not wearing a raincoat when removing VW filter housing - oil everywhere, had to trash my soaked tshirt Not double-checking wiring order on a distributor (had 8&5 swapped) snapping a shock on a lexus glove compartment (wouldn't go back on) Not holding the air ratchet tightly (almost broke my finger as it smacked against the A-arm) Signing up a customer for an oil change on a fully loaded day P.S: Do you really have to torque everything down to spec? I've been taught to go by the feel.
@tobiasvolk3665 жыл бұрын
It depends where the bolt goes Normally if you tighten up a bolt it won't go anywhere But if a bolt goes into aluminum make sure tto torque it up to spec! (learned that the hard way by almost loosing my front lower control arm)

Um, as a vw owner, I’m guilty. Just got a new mk4 gti with some “work done” and little did I know it had 7 very catastrophic engine codes that it threw off😂

Unrelated question. My mechanic recently found a stamp on the motor to signify at least the top end has been worked on. What does that mean exactly valves and head gasket?

Not allowing enough time for a maintenance session, because you are going to have to go back to get more supplies. On a positive note the whole under body is happier because last weekend I got a bunch of new screws/fasteners that were missing from the underbelly pan. BTW having a good service manual for your car is worth it. You can find everything in one place, every torque spec, wiring diagram... and publishers like Chilton or Bentley have accompanying web sites with updates to the manuals.
