@williamb46016 жыл бұрын
As a bit of a counter point: many people with large deadlifts cheat on barbell row variation but cheat only to a specific limit. The intention on these cheat rows is not to build muscle but instead to build strength in the back and to some extend in the legs.

Dr Mike. At 7:26 you say full range of motion and get a peak contraction on the eccentric. Did you mean eccentric, or do you mean concentric? I was trying to follow your logic, and you spoke fast, I was trying to keep up. I think I just misunderstood you?

Been saying this for years to my friends, a little ooomph isnt gunna kill anyone. I never count an "oomph" rep in my rep count, but if I can hit 8 and I'm aiming for 10 or 12 and I've to throw a little kicker in there I'll do it, I'll still write down 8 but I got those extra reps.

I've heard you say stretch under load is an independent stimulus several times. Can you provide the research study that supports this?
@matttaylor14497 жыл бұрын
I think it's a topic that has only really come to light in the last year or so. You probably will start hearing more people saying it before any real studies start to back it up. The stretch under load principle is a real thing, just look at strongmen competitors. Massive traps but never do shrugs. It's the weighted stretch on their traps from all the farmers walks and carries. It's not like they are actively trying to build traps but they are in a weighted stretch in a lot of there events.

Well, Alex is cheating on movements where you get a big stretch from it and he's also says that they are harder and fatigue the muscles more. So they don't say different things, they pretty much says the same thing with other words. Alex don't want shorter ROM or a bad form whilst cheating. So they're opinions on cheating is pretty much the same
@CrniWuk7 жыл бұрын
It's simply a question of pros and cons. The cons autweight the pros in my opinion. If you're a VERY advanced lifter, you might do some cheat reps here and there, I mean we all know this, let us be honest. This last lift where we barely can keep the form, and we pull trough it, just to get the weight up. That's I think 'ok', if you do it within reason and if you actually know about the form. However, there are exercises where you should never ever do that, particularly those that can mess up with your spine, rotator cuffs etc. I personaly always try to maintain full range of motion and good form, simply because I am a beginner and I am still making gains without the need for 'cheat reps'. Not to mention that I actually want to also lift when I am old, so it's better to actually listen to your joints. Because once you fuck up your knees or back or what ever, it's really difficult to do the exercises.

he is going to point out the obvious: Dr. Mike is a juicer, which he is. Not to say there ius anything wrong with it, but Alex speaks to natural growth and most of the other fitness people are speaking from an enhanced standpoint.
@richardboldbrooker63278 жыл бұрын
He's right; the term cheat or dirty rep is misleading. If like me, you first needed a bit of muscle in the arms and chest before you can do body-weight push ups properly (or just do one at all) then a 'cheat' rep is what you are after because you are concentrating on the muscle extension; the lifting down or lengthening part of a rep. For example; I can use two 15kg dumbbells with proper form; core engaged, arms fixed to the side, no rounding of shoulders, no swinging for momentum, etc, etc. But if I get just the one 20kg or 25kg dumbbell, and do a 'dirty rep' on the contraction part; the shortening of the biceps muscle. Get some swing on the rep, use some shoulder power, or my other hand to make sure the dumbbell is lifted, and then do the lengthening part properly, because your muscle is stronger in the lengthening of the muscle, and you do it as slow as you can. That is guaranteed micro tears in the muscle fibres, that produces hypertrophy; 48 to 72 hours of muscle repair that builds on muscle. So it can't be a 'cheat' if it does what you wanted to it do; cause muscle growth. The only caveat I'd add; this is for guarenteed 'hypertrophy' muscle building for the body beautiful at the beach. Strength training is more 5 reps x 5 sets at 80% of your 1RM that you do with precise mechanical form.
@robertsaladino5 жыл бұрын
Cheats are good for a new and different stimulus...yes you can cheat and still say "I like the mind muscle connection"...just because you do something one day out of the month doesn't mean you prescribe to it as a set theory.

What are your thoughts on cheat reps when training for power vs hypertrophy?
@matttaylor14497 жыл бұрын
Power and strength are the same except power has a bit more to do with speed. I really depends on the lift. E.g a clean or snatch requires power, but the power can be build by getting stronger in the deadlift, allowing you to move faster with lower weights.

U didnt really talk about the ULTIMATE stretch enhancement by pulling with excessive momentum. I mean, you propably cant recommend that for the average joe, but there are things you can do that make you much less likely to get injured in particular areas (hips, lover back), whilst milking the trap/lat gains in a row for example.

It's better to take the help of a spotter, ask him/her to push hard for the concentric phase and then you go for the slow eccentric negatives. Trust me, this works.

What he is actually doing for his trapezius is heavy isometrics in a stretched position. Which, very evidently from him, works.
@JonStossel8 жыл бұрын
Yon Jon I understand what Alex thinks he's doing, but his evidence is very anecdotal and his logic chain is often tenuous. Like for example, he achieved a lot of trap hypertrophy by doing this, therefore he claims all other methods are inferior. This despite the fact that he admits all he used to do for traps was slow movements with light weight (shrugs with 50 pound dumbbells) where he focused on the eccentric. Has he ever mentioned simply trying basic progressive overload? Also, his logic of 'it worked for me so it'll work for everyone." Although he's at least tempered this with saying he thinks only intermediates and beyond should train like this.
@samplumb54968 жыл бұрын
I'm sure Alex will have little to no problem with this video. Alex specifically states to only use cheat reps for certain exercise like shrugs and never to do it for things like bench,squat or deadlift.

If the stretch is independent muscle stimuli than cheat reps are better at stretching in many pulls, even if contracting portion is the same like in strict, lowering portion requires more activation due to higher load. And if you think about it, all Olympic lifts are cheat, because they use momentum, which is considered most athletic sport by the way. So in my opinion, cheat reps are useful tool but you have to know how and when to use them, definitely not for beginners.

>Cheating squats and deadlifts How does one cheat a deadlift?
@bakters8 жыл бұрын
By rounding the back. This way part of the load is on the spine itself.
@duncanthaw68588 жыл бұрын
That is not a cheat though. It actually makes the lift harder (and probably more painful) the entirety of the load is borne by the back anyway, you are only allowing it to shift to a less advantageous position.
@bakters8 жыл бұрын
+Duncan Thaw - Let's call it "ego lifting" then. However we call it, the truth is that by rounding the lower back plenty of people are capable of lifting a bit more, or especially of grinding out this last rep or two. Once your primary movers (glutes, erectors and hams) are fried, shifting the load to many supposedly weaker positions might result in being able to do "one more". Just because those other areas are not totally fired at the moment. Once we mentioned "ego lifting", in case of squats it's mostly restricted to limited range of motion. Technically you could achieve a bit more overload (harder set) by doing one or two partials at the end, though many people who go this way end up in doing partials all the time. With a gymbag full of excuses why they do what they do. "My knees hurt", "I broke my back while parachuting", "My psychiatrist told me to squat high", the lot. ;-)
