First time hearing this song today. Crazy how we listened to our music through television or radio then. Now, we have access to millions of songs. How times have changed.

Great song! He fell for her because she was so free, so alive, but she wouldn't show him what was inside her head, (she was dark as night). She told him she was wrong for him but he didn’t want to see, even though they pulled in opposite directions. Finally she gave him the keys to see inside. She wore a crown because he had made her a princess in his mind, but what he found was an empty room - they had nothing more to share than a good time. She was wrong, she was right

This was like the birth of the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl, the cliche that became so well known in movies...the wildchild that the protagonist wishes to save from herself, because of how free she makes him feel. Always assumed that the girl in this song took her own life...didn't just run away. Shotgun fire...2 dimes in the telephone. He was too late.

Gotta love the comments section. 17 years later I feel vindicated as to how good this hit is... just like the first time I heard it in my car on a very cold wintery November morning (5:00am) back in 2001... One of many tough periods in my life. But I soldier on thanks to great music like this.

These guys are an amazing band. At first I had only heard of them because of their song Superman, but as time went on I learned more of their songs, including this one which became my favorite. It sounds really happy, and the first time I heard it I thought the chorus sounded like elevator music. Then, I listened to the full song and the lyrics and I realized how sad it is and how sad a story it tells.

I remember hearing this song in some TV show in the early 2000s and downloading off Napster! Forgive me. I since bought all the albums so made up for it. But the version I fell in love with is different. It's slightly slower and has a longer intro and doesn't have those last words ("Now you're not"). I'll always feel it was the superior version and wonder why there's two.

He did a show on Halloween night 2000, in Annapolis, MD at the Ram's Head. Music had just been released. He explained this song was written for a friend who had committed suicide. None of her friends could figure why such a young person could that to themselves. Song also represents that what you see on the outside is not always what that person feels inside. He also said that Superman is a song about how people handle peer pressure and expectations put upon them by others.

I had a girlfriend like this once. When you meet a woman that you have a great time with, and it;s easy to be yourself with, you want to keep them, but you cant, she will move on eventually. You can love this woman, but you cant fall IN love or it can destroy you.Realize what this woman is to you ( a passing ship in the night where you are free to be you and have a great time together) and when she moves on, let her go and move on yourself. I still cant forget mine, she is always with me but...
